Background / History
Han Wanqing is the eldest legitimate daughter of the Earl of Ningyuan and his first wife. Her mother died while Wanqing and her two younger brothers, Han Yucheng and Han Nanxing, were still young. Their father subsequently elevated his concubine, Lady Wang, to wife. Wang initially presented herself as caring, but later withheld the siblings’ allowances and reduced their food. Wanqing brought her brothers to confront their father, who reprimanded Wang; afterward, Wanqing and her stepmother maintained only outward civility 3.
The Ningyuan family had declined considerably by her father’s generation, making Wanqing’s marriage to an imperial prince an unexpectedly prestigious match. Chu Hongle fell in love with her at first sight and personally asked the emperor to grant their marriage. Lady Wang attempted to substitute her own daughter, Han Xiangru, for Wanqing, but the Earl confined Wang until the wedding was over. The incident also led the capital’s noblewomen to stop associating with Wang 3.
Appearance
Chu Siqing finds her mother beautiful even immediately after childbirth, when exhaustion has left her pale 1.
- Features: Delicate, lovely face 1.
- Brows: Described as willow-leaf brows 2 12.
- Expressions: Her eyes curve when she smiles 1 4.
Personality
Wanqing is affectionate without being indulgent. She sympathizes with Nanxing when classmates mock his changing voice, but still condemns his fighting and refusal to accept punishment. She supports his preference for martial training while insisting that military ambition requires literacy, discipline, and sustained effort 8.
Her protectiveness extends beyond her immediate family. After selecting Nanny Li to nurse Siqing, she allows the woman to bring her young son into the household. Toward her daughter, she responds to extraordinary knowledge with acceptance rather than fear: her concern is that outsiders might exploit Siqing’s abilities or accuse her of being an evil spirit 2 9.
Wanqing generally preserves decorum during conflict, but kinship does not prevent her from demanding accountability. She forces Xiangru to confess to theft despite concern for the Han family’s reputation. Later, she warns Xiangru against an unsuitable marriage, then withdraws the promise of future help when her sister repeatedly rejects that advice 6 32 34.
She also uses dry humor with her husband. When Yongfu’s promised marriage remains unresolved after six months, Wanqing remarks that a few more years of Yongfu pining for him “hardly matters,” prompting Hongle to press the emperor again 29.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Chu Siqing’s Thoughts
Wanqing can hear her daughter’s babyish inner voice. She first mistakes it for a hallucination caused by exhaustion, then realizes Chu Hongle has heard it too 2.
- Uses Siqing’s warnings to help reject unsuitable wet nurses and choose Nanny Li 2.
- Learns of Xiangru’s concealed desire to marry Prince Yu and her involvement in the bracelet theft 3 4.
- Receives information about Nanxing’s expulsion and Xiangru’s proposed marriage 7 32 33.
- Trusts Siqing’s reassurance before allowing Tu Qingchen to examine her 16.
- Acts on advance warning of Yongfu’s assassination plot 31.
- This is an ability to hear Siqing’s thoughts; the context does not establish general mind-reading.
Investigation and Crisis Management
Wanqing combines her daughter’s information with questioning, physical evidence, and household authority.
- Takes possession of the stolen bracelet herself, preventing Xiangru from using the handover to approach Prince Yu or destroy the evidence 5.
- Threatens to involve the authorities to obtain Xiangru’s confession 6.
- Questions the jade pendant at Xiangru’s waist, exposing its connection to Qin Songyun 33 34.
- Keeps knowledge of an impending ambush concealed and orders the attackers captured alive, preserving witnesses for the investigation 31.
Equipment / Items
- Jade betrothal bracelet — A gift commissioned by Chu Hongle using an imperial household technique. Immersion in water reveals the character “Wan” on its inner surface, proving that it was made for Wanqing. Xiangru orders her maid to steal it, but Wanqing recovers it during their confrontation 4 5 6.
Relationships
- Chu Hongle / Prince Yu — Husband. His choice of their daughter’s name, Siqing, expresses “thinking of his beloved.” He openly affirms that Wanqing is the only woman he loves and defends her against attempts to disrupt their marriage 1 4 12.
- Chu Siqing — Daughter. Wanqing accepts her unusual nature but worries that the Holy Maiden title will deprive her of an ordinary childhood. She accompanies Siqing on her required palace visits 2 9 17 18.
- Earl of Ningyuan — Father. Wanqing appeals to him against Wang’s mistreatment and later works with him to warn Xiangru about the Qingyuan household 3 32 34.
- Han Yucheng — Younger full brother. Wanqing supports his examinations and takes an active interest in finding him a suitable wife rather than leaving the matter entirely to Wang 45 46 49.
- Han Nanxing — Younger full brother. His impulsiveness frequently exasperates her, but she supports his military ambitions and helps seek treatment for his prospective teacher, General Fang 8 9.
- Han Xiangru — Younger half-sister. Xiangru’s pursuit of Prince Yu, theft, and refusal to heed marriage warnings turn their already distant relationship into open estrangement 3 6 34.
- Madam Wang / Lady Wang — Stepmother. Their distrust stems from Wang’s neglect of Wanqing and her brothers and her attempt to replace Wanqing in the imperial marriage 3.
- Han Wenyuan and Han Xiangning — Younger half-brother and half-sister, both Wang’s children. Wanqing introduces them to Siqing at the full-month banquet after they defend Nanxing against Xiangru’s criticism 10.
- Empress Dowager Pei — Mother-in-law. Wanqing shares affectionate stories about Siqing with her; Pei later refuses to protect Yongfu from punishment for attacking Wanqing and the baby 13 31.
- Tu Qingchen — Imperial Preceptor overseeing Siqing’s cultivation. Wanqing initially fears that his knowledge of Siqing’s thoughts could endanger her, but accepts reassurance that it helped him identify her as the Holy Maiden 16 18.
- Yongfu — Hostile rival who resents Wanqing’s marriage to Prince Yu. Her jealousy leads first to the dog incident that triggers premature labor and later to an assassination attempt 12 31.
- Mei Qing — Senior maid. Wanqing sends her to fetch the household physician and later uses her as an intermediary in Yucheng’s prospective match 6 49.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Siqing’s Birth and Household Protection
- A dog charges at Wanqing during a courtyard walk, frightening her into premature labor. Both she and Siqing survive 1.
- Hearing Siqing’s thoughts gives the parents a way to evaluate the wet nurses. Wanqing’s immediate concern is both her daughter’s health and the risk of others discovering her extraordinary nature 2.
- Xiangru’s visit exposes a threat within Wanqing’s natal family. Wanqing refuses to let her hold Siqing, questions her marriage intentions, and helps establish ownership of the stolen bracelet 3 4 5.
- After securing Xiangru’s confession, Wanqing informs Madam Wang of the theft rather than allowing the incident to disappear behind appeals to sisterhood 6.
Supporting Nanxing’s Military Path
- Wanqing refuses to hide Nanxing from their father after his expulsion from Ten Thousand Pines Academy, but considers martial training a legitimate alternative to a scholarly career 8.
- Once she learns that Nanxing sincerely wants to help the injured Fang Yongshan, she asks Hongle about treatment. When Siqing produces a Recovery Pill, Wanqing proposes attributing it to an itinerant physician and keeping Nanxing’s involvement separate from his request for discipleship 9.
- She attends Nanxing’s apprenticeship banquet and thanks Madam Fang for supporting him 15.
Yongfu’s Attacks
- At Siqing’s full-month banquet, evidence establishes that Yongfu arranged the drugged-dog attack. Wanqing directly asks why she was targeted, and Yongfu admits that she resents the couple’s happy marriage 10 12.
- Yongfu loses her princess title and receives six months of confinement. As the confinement ends, Wanqing presses Hongle about the emperor’s delayed promise to arrange Yongfu’s marriage 14 29.
- Yongfu subsequently sends assassins after Wanqing and Siqing. Warned by her daughter, Wanqing stops the carriage and instructs Captain Lin Yuan to capture the attackers alive without revealing that their plan is known 31.
- The attackers’ confessions lead to Yongfu’s arrest. She is reduced to a commoner and sentenced to guard her father’s tomb for life 31.
Mother of the Holy Maiden
- Wanqing allows Tu Qingchen to examine Siqing only after hearing her daughter’s reassurance 16.
- After Siqing is identified as the Holy Maiden, the emperor orders visits to the Heavenly Derivation Pavilion every three days. Wanqing obeys despite concern about imposing national duties on an infant 17.
- When Hongle fails to have the decree rescinded, she comforts him and resolves to accompany Siqing herself 18.
Xiangru’s Marriage and Estrangement
- Wanqing visits the Ningyuan residence to warn that the Qingyuan family seeks Xiangru’s dowry and a connection to Prince Yu, while the proposed groom already keeps three mistresses 32.
- After Xiangru secretly meets Qin Songyun, Wanqing questions the jade pendant he gave her, bringing the concealed relationship into the open 33 34.
- Xiangru insists on the marriage and accuses Wanqing of jealousy. Wanqing makes clear that Prince Yu’s household will not resolve future problems arising from the match 34.
Yucheng’s Examinations and Matchmaking
- Wanqing prepares supplies for Yucheng’s nine-day Metropolitan Examination and visits temples and Taoist shrines to pray for him. Afterward, she checks Wang’s exaggerated praise to avoid placing undue pressure on him 45.
- She celebrates his fifth-place Metropolitan result and fourth-place Palace Examination result, while encouraging Nanxing not to judge all scholars by a few narrow-minded spectators 46 48.
- When Yucheng becomes interested in the Minister of Justice’s second daughter, Wanqing sends Mei Qing to establish the young woman’s identity and availability. The family plans to have the Earl propose the match 49.
Notable Quotes
“Who said martial training means you don't have to study? Even the provincial military examination has a written component. If you can barely read and know nothing of the past or present, how will you lead troops into battle?” 8
“Never mind. I'll accompany Siqing there from now on.” 18
