As soon as Ji Chang reached this stretch of the Qi River, he heard people saying that a strange old man had been fishing with a straight hook all day long over the past few days. It was utterly absurd. Once he heard this, he knew he was on the right track.
And so Ji Chang began searching for the old man.
On the first day, he waited by the river all day for nothing. No one came.
On the second day, the wind rose. It was especially fierce along the riverbank, cold and chilling enough to make him shiver uncontrollably. Ji Chang reasoned that seeking a worthy man required perseverance; he could not give up over a little obstacle. And so he spent another day waiting in the wind.
On the third day, it rained. Ji Chang gritted his teeth and kept waiting. Though his health was poor, the omen of the Flying Bear in his dream had made everything clear: this was the worthy man who would bring Xiqi to greatness. He could not afford to slight him.
Only in the afternoon did the rain finally stop. Wearing a straw hat and a straw rain cape, Jiang Ziya sat on a rock and fished.
Ji Chang waited a while, making sure this was indeed the worthy man he sought before showing himself. He had only just stepped forward to speak when a fit of dry coughing seized him. After quite some time, he finally said, "Fishing with a straight hook truly brings joy to the fish."
