Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes

Partial loss of demon core and Natal Foxfire 4 Gives Lou refined foxfire and a core fragment containing over a thousand years of cultivation. The fragment becomes Lou’s new Golden Core; Ning Ke collapses from exhaustion afterward.
Sealed cultivation — present timeline 13 While imprisoned by adult Lou, cannot use his cultivation freely and suffers from sword intent ravaging his body.
Golden Core — A Ke avatar 15 20 Separates one tail into a low-cultivation teenage body carrying his consciousness. Its Golden Core cultivation allows him to spar with Lou on comparable terms.
Peak mid Golden Core — A Ke avatar 29 Reaches this level after several months of tournament preparation, alongside extensive study of talismans and formations.
Severe cultivation depletion — A Ke avatar 45 49 Repeatedly converts and transfers his power to Lou, while extracting heart blood. No final realm is specified; he becomes noticeably thinner before restoring Lou’s eyes and heart.
Loss of A Ke’s tail-avatar 59 129 142 A Ke dies sealing the Great Demon. The sacrifice costs Ning Ke a tail’s life and weakens the demonic power sustaining his eyesight; these losses remain evident in his true body.

Golden Core — restored fox-tail body 194 Awakens after half a month in an ice coffin in a young, healthy body made from his lost tail. Retains the Nine-Tailed Fox bloodline; recovering nine tails through ordinary cultivation would require at least a thousand years.

Background / History

Before transmigration, Ning Ke worked in the modern world and was his younger sister’s regular first reader. She wrote webnovels and liked assigning him roles in them, including the overwhelmingly powerful early antagonist of Ask the Heavenly Dao 1 7 29.

His parents had died, and he took on the responsibility of protecting his younger sister. He once broke his leg in a traffic accident while shielding her. Despite pain or distress, he originally could not cry—a physiological trait that also caused him to fail an acting audition requiring uncontrollable sobbing. After returning from the Qianyuan Continent, he becomes able to cry, initially during traumatic dreams and later during a successful dramatic audition 12 24 179 187.

The original novel attributes the Flowing Cloud Sect’s destruction, Lou Yunxiao’s lost eyes, and his ruined Golden Core to Demon Venerable Ning Ke. Ning Ke initially inherits that identity without the original owner’s memories and repeatedly questions the massacre’s unexplained motive. His journey into the ancient past later reveals that his own actions helped establish the history he had believed belonged to another person 1 20 24 97 98.

Ten Thousand Years of Personal History

During the ancient-era storyline, Ning Ke encounters the earlier Lou Yunxiao and Bai Wanru in Red River City. Lou names the little fox “A Ke,” suggesting an origin for the junior-disciple identity Ning Ke has already used. Ning Ke becomes involved in the defense of the city and the struggle to seal the Great Demons, supported by Jiu Yuan and the fox clan 82 87 88 95 96 97.

The battle leaves his cultivation foundation damaged and Jiu Yuan asleep. Ning Ke spends thousands of years cultivating, eventually reaches Tribulation, and gains followers through rescuing young demons and defeating powerful rivals. Yin Feng is his first follower. Ning Ke builds the Demon Palace lavishly in the hope that Jiu Yuan will enjoy it upon awakening 97.

He also establishes the provenance of several important plot items:

  • Places Pale Silver and Red Cloud in the Sword Sect’s Sword Tomb 97.
  • Entrusts the Buddha Lotus Lamp to a virtuous artifact refiner, later identified as Wugou’s father, who embeds it in a staff 97.
  • Records Heaven’s Way’s talismans and formations in the Golden Silk Wooden Token and places it in Ning Xiaoxiao’s swaddling clothes 97.

The Flowing Cloud Sect disaster is ultimately connected to Nan Lou’s revival and escape from its seal. Ning Ke’s recovered history includes killing Bai Wanru and the sect’s disciples, as well as destroying Lou’s cultivation and eyesight, leaving him devastated by his own involvement. Later revelations identify Nan Lou as the Great Demon that devoured Lou Jing and used his appearance; Gao Ze also exposes the demon’s impersonation of Ning Ke after consuming his flesh 98 106 153.

Responsibility Beyond the Novel

Ning Ke initially assumes the world’s suffering arose because of him and the story his sister wrote. He later learns that the novel-created Small World exists within a larger reality of greater worlds and the Divine Realm. The Sun God, rather than Ning Ke, is the underlying source of the continent’s calamities, including the release of demon poison and the Snow Dragon Clan’s destruction 34 122 134.

Heaven’s Way’s intervention brought Ning Ke into the world and burdened him with its repair. After coming to terms with his experiences, Ning Ke recognizes that this intervention also made his extraordinary relationships possible. Once back in the modern world with his memories restored, he maintains that he would still have chosen to undertake the mission 91 155 187.

Appearance

Ning Ke’s Demon Venerable body has a seductive foxlike beauty, while A Ke resembles his real-world appearance without the same overt demonic aura 13 38.

  • Foxlike eyes and delicate features: His beauty attracts attention even when he is disguised as an ordinary young disciple 15 26.
  • Long, ink-black hair: Usually secured with a hairpin; it falls loose when Lou’s sword intent breaks the pin during their tournament match 37.
  • Jade-white hands and supple build: Described with slender fingers and a flexible waist during combat 3 23 37.
  • Cool fragrance: Both his female disguise and A Ke share a scent that nearly exposes their connection to Lou 5 25.
  • Lavish clothing: Initially appears in an extravagant purple gown; later wears a fur-trimmed red cloak that makes strangers mistake him for a woman at first glance 1 26.
  • Unchanged build in his first disguise: Becoming “Big Sister” changes his appearance and clothing, not his height or physique 6.
  • Mingxin disguise: Appears as an exceptionally handsome bald monk. A flame marking on his forehead seals his cultivation and contributes to the disguise 62 64 107.
  • Silver-white true-form hair: His black-haired disguise fails during his collapse at the Flowing Cloud Sect ruins. In combat, his revealed form has silver hair, fox ears, sharp claws, and nine tails, one of which is faded from his earlier sacrifice 98 136.
  • Modern-world appearance: At twenty-five, convincingly portrays a fifteen-year-old Shadow Guard. His striking looks and inherited combat presence attract viral attention and impress the audition director 179 186 187.
  • Restored body: In the return-to-Qianyuan extra, receives a young and healthy fox-bloodline body made from a lost tail 194.

Personality

Ning Ke is irreverent, theatrical, and quick to turn danger into an opportunity for teasing. He boasts about his strength, spars mercilessly with young Lou, and needles the adult Lou even while wounded and chained. His cheerful manner is also a deliberate cover for pain he cannot endure openly 9 12 13.

His strongest attachment is to family. The possibility of returning to his grieving sister persuades him to accept A Ke’s brutal mission, while Ning Xiaoxiao’s resemblance to her immediately draws out his generosity and protectiveness. He buys Xiaoxiao comforts, teaches her, and tries to prevent her from becoming romantically entangled with Lou 14 15 16 19.

Although he initially treats helping Lou as a survival requirement, his concern becomes increasingly personal. He feels guilty when Lou offers sincere friendship to someone acting under false pretenses, admires him as an equal and rival, and ultimately sacrifices his avatar’s cultivation, eyes, and heart blood for his recovery 21 37 49.

Ning Ke repeatedly explains intimacy as professional role-playing and insists that he is straight. That explanation becomes less convincing as he grows attached to sharing Lou’s bed, delights in his gifts, and privately realizes he wants to kiss him. He continues to fear that acknowledging his feelings could interfere with his mission and return home 27 30 33 36.

Guilt, Withdrawal, and Recovery

The deaths around him gradually overwhelm his ability to treat events as a performance. Xiao Lü and Xiao Lan’s deaths force him to confront the world’s reality, while Buddhist practice under Wugou temporarily steadies him. Reliving ten thousand years of loss produces a much deeper collapse: he welcomes death as punishment, believes himself unable to face his real-world family, and deliberately pushes away people who trust him 55 64 98 101.

His cold rejection of Lou does not remain a settled account of his feelings. Although he says only guilt survives their history, he secretly retrieves Lou’s sachets and eventually admits that he likes him and cannot bear to let him go. His conflicting behavior reflects his effort to suppress attachments before an anticipated departure 103 105 115.

Ning Ke values agency as well as affection. He realizes that what he wants from Lou is calm, rational understanding rather than hatred or pressure to confess love. When they reconcile, he insists that staying must be his own choice and treats settling their past wrongs as necessary before beginning anew 136 151 152.

Jiu Yuan’s support helps him accept that his life in this world was meaningful and that neither he nor Lou can be reduced to simply right or wrong. He stops treating his experiences as a betrayal of his original identity, reconnects openly with his loved ones, and later expresses pride in the choices that brought him a fulfilling future 151 153 187 192.

Abilities & Skills

Transformation and Tail Avatars

  • Changes his appearance and conceals his fox-demon aura to pose as Lou’s female rescuer 2 6.
  • Separates a tail into a human avatar carrying his consciousness; A Ke operates while his true body remains in the Demon Realm 15 26.
  • The avatar’s destruction would not kill his true body, but would sharply reduce its cultivation and weaken its eyesight 15.
  • Can draw on his distant true body to manifest a defensive Nine-Tailed Fox phantom. Distance limits how long he can sustain it 50.
  • Uses his true body, rather than another tail-avatar, as Mingxin. His Transformation Art and flame marking conceal his identity so thoroughly that even a Tribulation-stage expert cannot identify him by ordinary examination 62.
  • Transformation cannot conceal his karma from Wugou, nor completely eliminate the scent, foxfire resonance, and personal habits that Lou associates with his other identities 63 67 68 115.
  • Manifests fox ears, claws, silver hair, and tails in his powerful combat form. His demonic power can heal wounds, though chaotic power remains especially difficult for him to resist 136.

Natal Foxfire

  • Produces blue-green fire that naturally counters the souls inhabiting the Demon Soul River 2.
  • Its inherited strength rivals exceptional flames born of heaven and earth and surpasses the fire of a human fire-heavenly-root cultivator even at peak cultivation 3.
  • Refines a portion to remove its identifying demonic aura before transferring it to Lou, where it drives out invading demon souls 4 22.
  • Burns through Wugou’s spiritual-energy threads with an extremely thin layer of flame during their tournament match 35.
  • Often avoids revealing it while undercover, even when suffering from the cold 22.
  • Destroys the escaping demonic force that possesses Xiao Lü and cremates the victims’ remains to prevent further transformation 55.
  • Uses it for pill refinement and to treat a shoulder wound 62 68.
  • The separated portion inside Lou retains a latent resonance with Ning Ke’s origin foxfire and recognizes Ning Ke without harming him 68 115.
  • In full combat, releases deep-blue foxfire hot enough to vaporize snow and incoming ice attacks 136.

Charm Art and Physical Strength

  • The original body’s long practice of Charm Art gives his gaze and voice a seductive quality, even when he is speaking normally 13.
  • A Ke’s softened voice remains beguiling despite being only a single-tail avatar 19.
  • Benefits from the powerful physique of the Demon Clan; describes himself to young Lou as primarily a body cultivator rather than a sword specialist 9.
  • His charm cannot overcome the restrictions of his sealed cultivation in adult Lou’s custody 13.
  • Uses Charm Art on Wugou while attempting to undermine his trust; Gao Ze interrupts the spell 101.
  • Develops claw force equivalent to sword intent and combines it with his physique, kicks, punches, and foxfire in close combat 136.
  • Resists Jiang He’s attempt at mental entrapment through Fox Clan charm arts, and deliberately breaks his own injured bones to escape physical restraint 165.

Talismans, Formations, and Seals

  • Designs the magic array in Lou’s moon-white ribbon to gently nourish his blind eyes 10.
  • Learns Explosion, Hurricane, and Diamond Talismans from the Golden Silk Wooden Token 23.
  • Masters linked formations and much of the token’s five-meter-tall composite talisman using his Demon Venerable-level comprehension 29.
  • Draws talismans directly in the air with condensed energy, defeating Zhuang Yusheng’s linked talisman chain 36.
  • Combines rapid formation placement with sword attacks to disrupt Lou’s balanced footwork 37.
  • Recognizes the token’s enormous talisman on the Great Demon’s stone stele and studies how to reinforce its failing runes 45 46 50.
  • Prolonged exploration of the token can cause a painful backlash 23.
  • Teaches Demon Clan leaders protective formations against devils and orders them to locate the ancient Great Demon seal without approaching it 56.
  • Deduces the twelve attack locations around Northern Tour City from a smaller array rubbing. Recognizes the Twelve Earthly Branches and Five Elements Formation, orders an evacuation, and assigns defenders by elemental affinity 68.
  • Sets six defensive formations around Mrs. Liu and Junjun during the city’s crisis 70.
  • Receives talisman and formation manuals from the old man in Red River City. Heaven’s Way gives him the Demon-Sealing Talisman and Heaven’s Way Formation, which become central to the ancient sealing mission 88 96.
  • Later records that knowledge in the Golden Silk Wooden Token, completing the causal connection between its contents and his own learning 97.
  • Reinforces Red River City before Bai Wanru refines the Buddha Lotus Lamp and continues defending her courtyard under the Great Demons’ attack 90 91.
  • Uses rapid footwork to lay an array during his duel with Lou and clear the mist-obscured battlefield 137.

Time Domain

  • Awakens a domain that initially stops time for one breath, allowing only him to move freely. Repeated practice extends the duration to three breaths 113.
  • Develops the domain through Voidyear Mountain’s trials, learning to wither a blade of grass and restore it. He hopes sufficiently advanced control could reverse death and restore Lou’s lost family and sect, but this remains an aspiration at that stage 131.
  • Channels time manipulation along energy threads to age and weaken Lou’s Dragon-Scale Ice Armor, and stops time to attack him while suspended in midair 136.
  • His time-stopping attacks have intervals that a sufficiently perceptive opponent can exploit; Lou studies their timing and uses ice doubles to create openings 137.
  • Uses large-scale Time Reversal to undo the Sun God’s devastation and revive those killed during the reversed period, including Heaven’s Way. One such intervention consumes three tails and endangers his life and soul 165.
  • Time Reversal is not selectively beneficial: demons killed during the same interval can also return, creating dangerous changes to the battle’s outcome 166.
  • Uses Time Stop to evade Jiang He’s lethal third-eye beam 166.
  • Xiao Yuan explains that losing the system would sever his route home. Jiang He identifies system missions as one possible source of a temporary talent for time 166.

Swordsmanship

  • Overwhelms young Lou with a wooden sword during the Demon Abyss training period 9.
  • Loses that overwhelming advantage when fighting through his Golden Core avatar, making later matches genuine contests of skill 20 23.
  • Fights Lou to a draw in the tournament final by combining Red Cloud, swordplay, talismans, and formations 37.
  • Retains formidable combat skills after returning to the modern world. Effortlessly subdues an armed man at the hospital and later performs an audition sword fight with speed and precision that overwhelm the martial arts instructor 179 186.

Healing and Power Transfer

  • Converts demonic power into spiritual energy to stabilize injuries and support Lou’s cultivation 3 45.
  • Uses pills and spiritual energy to treat Xiaoxiao and an injured disciple 41 43.
  • Transfers a refined demon-core fragment that repairs Lou’s dantian and becomes a compatible Golden Core 4.
  • Repeatedly extracts his own heart blood and gives Lou cultivation before using his eyes and accumulated blood to restore Lou’s sight and heartbeat 46 49.
  • These treatments carry real physical costs; Xiao Yuan cannot block the pain of extracting heart blood 46.
  • Successfully refines Demon-Dissipating Pills on his first attempt, supplying pills used to prevent demon-corrupted corpses from becoming living dead 64 67 68.
  • Lou later plans the dangerous Forbidden Blood-Merging Technique to remove Ning Ke’s demon poison and grant him immunity. At its proposal, the technique is a possible treatment, not an established innate immunity of Ning Ke’s 142.

Mentorship and Other Skills

  • Teaches Lou to balance the yin devil path against the yang Dao through calmness, restraint, and control of desire 6.
  • Explains the Remnant Scroll’s cultivation method to help Lou progress toward peak Nascent Soul 46.
  • Teaches Xiaoxiao the Golden Silk Wooden Token’s talismans and formations 24 34.
  • Inherits knowledge of alchemy and artifact forging from the original body 3 9.
  • Plays the flute, accompanying Zhuang’s guqin during their Nantong City outing 28.
  • Leaves Lou the Clear Mind Heart Sutra and instructions for controlling demonic thoughts. Lou continues using it during their separation 122 131 132.
  • Helps teach domain abilities in Demon Clan territory alongside Wugou and Lou before the Divine War 160.
  • Trains in acting before transmigration and continues honing his craft after returning. His recovered memories let him consciously restrain his killing aura and draw on genuine grief for a dramatic performance 179 187.
  • Builds a successful acting career over five years, culminating in a Best Actor award at thirty 192.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Red Cloud Sword — Divine sword that chooses Ning Ke in the Sword Tomb. Spiritually linked to Lou’s Pale Silver, allowing their wielders to sense one another’s danger; Ning Ke later stores a soul fragment inside it. He places both swords in the Sword Tomb during his ancient history and later leaves Red Cloud with Lou before departing for training 22 23 38 97 122.
  • Spatial storage ring — Holds weapons, herbs, pills, magical artifacts, clothing, jewels, and a portable house used during Lou’s recovery. Its origin is revealed when Jiu Yuan gives it to him ten thousand years in the past 3 87.
  • Fan / Bone Fan — The original villain’s preferred elegant accessory; Ning Ke uses it to maintain his persona and hide startled expressions. Jiu Yuan gives him the fan in the ancient era. It later blocks Nan Yi’s attack and serves as a conduit for divine-sense threads, energy nets, and time-infused attacks 2 9 13 87 91 128 136 137.
  • Lou Family Heirloom Token — Jade token Lou gives his rescuer before leaving the Demon Abyss. Completes Ning Ke’s first mission and later becomes leverage against adult Lou. Xiao Yuan explains that time reversal keeps the relevant portion in Ning Ke’s storage ring until the timeline reaches its later transfer 10 11 115.
  • Golden Silk Wooden Token — Xiaoxiao’s repository of talisman and formation knowledge. Ning Ke takes custody because studying it alone is dangerous for her. During his ancient history, he creates its record from Heaven’s Way’s teachings and places it with the infant Xiaoxiao 23 24 97.
  • Flying Ship — Comfortable transport fitted with a Temperature-Control Array 23.
  • Osmanthus Jade Hairpin — Chooses it as the replacement for the pin Lou breaks; Lou personally fixes it into his hair 37 38.
  • Sachet and paired sword tassels — Gifts from Lou; Ning Ke wears the sachet immediately. Lou later presents many sachets embroidered during his grief for A Ke, and Ning Ke secretly retrieves them despite claiming to reject his affection 28 33 103 105.
  • Heaven-grade pill — Selected at Xiao Yuan’s direction to enable Lou to use Ning Ke’s eyes 38.
  • My Days and Nights with the Daoist Supreme — Erotic illustrated books found among the original owner’s possessions; Yueya later brings him the second volume and helps him obtain the third 3 13 55.
  • Bone Whistle — Gift from Jiu Yuan intended to summon help. Ning Ke refrains from using it during the ancient battle because he does not want to endanger the fox clan 87 95.
  • Buddha Lotus Lamp — Treasure he seeks as Mingxin to help prevent Lou’s loss of control. Wugou offers it conditionally, later gives it to him despite his rejection of their bond, and Ning Ke passes the lamp-bearing staff to Lou. Bai Wanru’s preserved soul later reaches Ning Ke through the lamp 63 101 102 142.
  • Clear Mind Heart Sutra — Buddhist text left for Lou to manage demonic thoughts during Ning Ke’s absence 122 131.
  • Purple Osmanthus Pattern — Unexplained wrist mark that Ning Ke initially mistakes for evidence of ghost possession after returning home. Lou uses it to locate him in the modern world 179 180 181.
  • Buddhist Prayer Beads — Life-saving beads Ning Ke wears in the modern world. Lou conceals himself inside them, while Bai Wanru communicates with him through them. Ning Ke kisses the beads as his memories return and later uses a pointed remark about their “deity” to signal that he knows he has been deceived 183 186 187.

Relationships

  • Lou Yunxiao — Initially regards Ning Ke’s inherited identity as his mortal enemy, “Big Sister” as his benefactor, and A Ke as his trusted junior brother. Ning Ke’s mentorship develops into friendship, mutual attraction, and repeated sacrifice while Lou remains unaware that the identities belong to one person. Lou later recognizes Mingxin as A Ke, identifies his female rescuer, and discovers the Demon Venerable’s connection to them. Their relationship passes through rejection, possessiveness, restraint, and reconciliation before Ning Ke openly accepts him. They build a shared modern-world life and later return to cultivation together; Ning Ke explicitly chooses an exclusive life with Lou rather than having children 5 11 21 36 49 102 115 137 151 152 153 192 194.
  • Ancient Lou Yunxiao — The earlier Lou whom Ning Ke meets ten thousand years in the past names him A Ke, cares for his little-fox form, and fights beside him against the Great Demons. His death becomes a central source of Ning Ke’s grief. Ning Ke later insists that the present Lou must live as himself rather than be defined by his past-life counterpart 82 95 98 136.
  • Xiao Yuan — Plot-repair system and constant confidant. Assigns identities and missions, explains the world’s dangers, and regularly challenges Ning Ke’s claims that his affection is only acting. As his emotional condition deteriorates, she becomes openly concerned, tries to ground him in memories of home, and encourages him to rest 1 14 21 34 98 101 115.
  • Ning Xiao, his younger sister — Author of Ask the Heavenly Dao and his principal initial reason for wanting to return home. Xiao Yuan confirms that she remains in the real world. After his return, Ning Xiao worries about his unexplained abilities and trauma, investigates the Purple Osmanthus Pattern, and deduces that he traveled to the Qianyuan Continent during his coma 1 14 15 179 180 189.
  • Ning Xiaoxiao — Junior sister and the novel’s female lead, not simply his transmigrated sibling. Her resemblance to Ning Xiao leads him to treat her as family and become her protector and teacher. He later discovers that he placed the Golden Silk Wooden Token with her as an infant. Ning Xiao identifies Xiaoxiao as the other half of her soul; the two become close in the modern-world reunion. Ning Ke promises Xiaoxiao that he will stay after revealing his identity 15 16 24 97 153 189 192.
  • Gao Ze — Sword Sect master who accepts A Ke and entrusts Lou’s care to him. Ning Ke finances renovations the impoverished sect cannot afford. Gao later learns his identities, trains alongside him on Voidyear Mountain, and publicly clears his name, ordering the Sword Sect to fight the Great Demon and Sun God under Ning Ke’s commands 15 18 101 122 153.
  • Zhuang Yusheng — Persistent suitor, friend, and talented talisman rival. Ning Ke declines his proposal but respects his good nature and helps him recover after his match with Lou. Zhuang remains part of his wider family circle, teases Lou during their reunion, and later enrolls at Ning Xiao’s university alongside Xiaoxiao 28 36 153 192.
  • Wugou — Tournament opponent who recognizes Ning Ke as an outsider and foresees his miserable death. Initially agrees to keep his insight secret. Later identifies both the Demon Venerable and A Ke through karma, bargains over the Buddha Lotus Lamp, and uses Buddhist discipline to steady Ning Ke’s mind. His fascination develops into deep loyalty; he continues trusting Ning Ke despite attempts to drive him away. His whereabouts after Ning Ke’s thirtieth-year awards ceremony are unknown 34 35 63 64 101 105 194.
  • Yin Feng — Wolf guardian and trusted aide of the Demon Venerable; collects the tribes’ tribute at Ning Ke’s command. The Mahayana-stage Snow Wolf prodigy willingly serves him rather than becoming clan chief. Ning Ke originally gains his loyalty by defeating him during his ancient travels. Yin Feng comforts him after the palace deaths, notices his damaged eyesight and fluctuating power, and later reveals jealousy over Lou’s place in Ning Ke’s heart 13 55 57 97 129 151.
  • Yueya — Devoted cat guardian who kicks young Lou into the Demon Abyss and later secretly supplies Ning Ke with a book sequel. Her playful familiarity continues in the Demon Palace. She helps search for him and becomes angrily protective upon recognizing his love for Lou 2 13 55 151.
  • Silver Gray — Wolf cub Ning Ke assigns to guard Ning Family Village as atonement. Receives a strand of Ning Ke’s divine consciousness to call for help and promises to conceal his identity. Protects the connection between Ning Ke and A Ke when questioned after the village crisis 27 29 59.
  • Snakey / She-She — Python guide who leads Ning Ke toward the Great Demon’s underground palace and later escorts Xiaoxiao. Recognizes Ning Ke beneath his Mingxin disguise and responds eagerly to his approval 40 41 68 72.
  • Jiu Yuan — Elder-brother figure and powerful Nine-Tailed Fox who gives Ning Ke his future ring, fan, and Bone Whistle. He heals and reassures Ning Ke, insists that he may rely on family rather than carry every burden alone, and helps him reconsider his relationship with Lou. In the modern world, his investment in an entertainment company supports Ning Ke’s acting career 87 95 151 152 187 192.
  • Bai Wanru — Lou’s mother, an accomplished artifact refiner, and a maternal figure to Ning Ke. He protects her during the creation of the Buddha Lotus Lamp; her death and his later involvement in the Flowing Cloud Sect tragedy haunt him. Her soul survives in the lamp and comforts him in a dream. In the modern world, she accompanies him to his audition and insists that Lou respect his consent and pace of recovery 83 90 91 98 142 186 187.
  • Heaven’s Way — Brings Ning Ke into the world and supplies knowledge essential to sealing the Great Demons. Its burden contributes to Ning Ke’s guilt, but he eventually appreciates the relationships made possible by its intervention. He later sacrifices three tails to reverse its death during the Divine War 88 96 155 165.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Transmigration and the Demon Abyss Rescue

Ning Ke arrives at the apparent endpoint of his sister’s novel, already captured by adult Lou and facing torture. Xiao Yuan rewinds time and instructs him to fill an unresolved storyline: the identity of the beautiful woman who saved Lou after the Flowing Cloud Sect massacre 1 3.

He rescues Lou from the Demon Soul River, sacrifices part of his core and foxfire, and spends a year training him. Before their separation, he gives Lou an eye-nourishing ribbon; Lou’s reciprocal gift of the family token completes the mission and earns Ning Ke ten additional days of life 4 6 10.

Return to Captivity

Back in the present, the token stops Lou from killing him. Ning Ke implies that the missing benefactor is connected to him, then directs Lou toward the distant Snow Snake Tribe to buy time. Once alone, he initiates a second rewind to escape the pain of his captivity 11 12 13.

A Ke and the Sword Sect

His second assignment is to supply the missing background of A Ke, a junior disciple destined to give Lou his eyes and self-destruct. Ning Ke creates the single-tail avatar, joins the Sword Sect, and unexpectedly encounters the female lead, Ning Xiaoxiao 14 15.

While performing the devoted-junior role, he helps Lou recover from isolation, defends him against prejudice, and brings him into the disciples’ daily life. Lou’s genuine trust forces Ning Ke to confront the moral cost of using friendship to complete a mission 18 20 21.

Twin Swords and the Sect Tournament

Red Cloud and Pale Silver choose Ning Ke and Lou, linking them through their weapons. Ning Ke also studies Xiaoxiao’s token and begins teaching her its contents 22 23 24.

At the tournament, Wugou’s insight and Xiao Yuan’s explanation reveal that repairing the plot protects an independently conscious world, not merely Ning Ke’s route home. Ning Ke defeats Wugou and Zhuang, then draws with Lou in the final bout 34 35 36 37.

Qianyuan Secret Realm and Lou’s Restoration

Ning Ke enters the Secret Realm knowing A Ke’s scripted death is approaching. His investigation of the Great Demon becomes a rescue when Lou is captured while protecting Xiaoxiao. He sends her to warn the other disciples and follows Pale Silver to the underground palace 38 40 41 43.

Lou has become a memory-impaired living corpse under the Demon’s control. Ning Ke discovers that the seal matches the token’s composite talisman and spends months supporting Lou’s cultivation while collecting his own heart blood. Once Lou reaches peak Nascent Soul, Ning Ke restores his sight and heartbeat with his own eyes and accumulated blood, then says farewell 43 45 46 49.

Ning Ke reinforces the seal under the Demon’s attack, using a Nine-Tailed Fox phantom drawn from his distant true body to protect himself. A Ke ultimately dies sealing the Great Demon, leaving Lou grieving and Ning Ke’s true body weakened by the loss of a tail and damage to his eyesight 50 59 129 142.

Demon Palace and Ning Family Village

Back in the Demon Realm, Ning Ke briefly finds comfort in his palace companions. Xiao Lü’s demonic possession and Xiao Lan’s death shatter that respite. He destroys the escaping devil, cremates both bodies, and mobilizes the clan against further possessions 55 56.

Through a water mirror, he sees Lou grieving over A Ke’s preserved body and hears his confession of love. Xiao Yuan warns that Lou’s demonic thoughts are worsening and assigns a monk identity for the next repair stage 56.

At Ning Family Village, Ning Ke maintains a ruthless façade before Lou and the sect masters but leads their impending battle away from the villagers. Silver Gray conceals his connection to A Ke, while Gao Ze begins questioning the assumptions surrounding his guilt. After escaping, Ning Ke collapses, wounded and haunted by the villagers he killed and Lou’s hatred 59 62.

Mingxin and the Northern Tour City Crisis

Ning Ke joins the Buddhist Order as Mingxin through an elaborate disguise, apparent sincerity, flattery, and lavish gifts. Wugou recognizes his karma and negotiates secrecy and companionship. Ning Ke seeks the Buddha Lotus Lamp, but Wugou makes access conditional on following his instructions 62 63.

Three months of Buddhist duties settle Ning Ke’s troubled mind. Assigned to a Demon-Slaying Team, he reunites with Lou and Xiaoxiao while pretending not to know them. Lou’s suspicions grow through Ning Ke’s kindness, scent, familiarity with Red Cloud, and foxfire resonance 64 67 68.

Ning Ke refines Demon-Dissipating Pills, identifies the city’s endangered formation, orders its evacuation, and coordinates the five-element defense. He remains constrained by his sealed cultivation, while Lou repeatedly shields him from stronger demons. Even when Lou treats him as A Ke, Ning Ke insists on the name Mingxin 68 70 72.

The Ancient Era and the Truth Behind the Massacre

The third-stage storyline takes Ning Ke ten thousand years into the past, where he meets ancient Lou and Bai Wanru, receives Jiu Yuan’s gifts, and learns how the Buddha Lotus Lamp and other important items enter history. He helps rescue refugees and defend Red River City while Bai refines the lamp 82 87 88 90.

When the Great Demons attack, he intercepts Nan Yi’s strike against Bai and suffers severe injuries. Jiu Yuan heals him and joins Lou’s desperate battle. Ning Ke chooses to break his cultivation seal despite permanent consequences, accepting the mission to erect a stone stele, establish the Heaven’s Way Formation, and suppress the Great Demons 91 95 96 97.

The aftermath extends across ten thousand years: Jiu Yuan sleeps, Ning Ke rebuilds his cultivation and becomes Demon Venerable, and he places essential artifacts where his earlier missions will find them. Discovering Lou’s reincarnation eventually brings him back into the Flowing Cloud Sect disaster and Nan Lou’s revival 97 98.

Returning to the sect’s ruins, Ning Ke collapses under memories of Bai’s death, Lou’s death, Red River City’s massacre, and his own later actions. Wugou and Gao Ze find him, but his guilt leads him to seek isolation rather than comfort 98 101.

Identity Revelations, Separation, and Divine Training

Ning Ke asks Gao Ze to conceal A Ke and Mingxin from Lou, but Xiao Yuan confirms that identity disclosure no longer threatens the stabilized mission. Wugou gives him the lamp, and Ning Ke subsequently acknowledges to Lou that he is A Ke and passes him the staff bearing his mother’s artifact 101 102.

Lou’s confession meets a cold rejection. Ning Ke denies romantic love and challenges whether Lou’s feelings are gratitude and dependence, while Lou’s forced kiss and obsessive determination further complicate their relationship. Ning Ke’s secret retrieval of Lou’s sachets and later confession reveal that his withdrawal is not simple indifference 103 105 115.

Pursuing Nan Lou brings Ning Ke and Lou to the snowy mountains. Jun Mo, Qing Ru, and Niao Niao offer shelter; Ning Ke awakens his Time Domain, and Lou identifies him as his former “older sister.” Ning Ke admits his affection but soon leaves Lou with Red Cloud and the Clear Mind Heart Sutra while undertaking further training 106 109 113 115 122.

On Voidyear Mountain, his growing command of time gives him hope of undoing death. He also stops attributing the demon’s crimes to himself and recognizes the Sun God as the root of the catastrophe. After completing the trials first, he leaves immediately out of concern for the outside world and Lou 131 132 134.

Capture, Family Intervention, and Reconciliation

Ning Ke returns amid crimes committed in his likeness. His confrontation with Lou becomes a duel in which he reveals his nine-tailed form and time techniques. Lou adapts to his abilities, deliberately accepts a chest wound to trap him, and addresses him as A Ke 134 136 137.

While Ning Ke is recovering, Lou discovers the damage to his tail and eyesight and plans a dangerous blood-based treatment for his demon poison. He restrains Ning Ke to prevent further demonization, combining genuine care with continued control. Bai Wanru’s preserved soul visits Ning Ke in a dream and comforts his grief 142 144.

Jiu Yuan and Ning Ke’s allies arrive after searching for him. Their support helps him choose reconciliation rather than flight. Ning Ke has them administer a restrained beating to Lou, demands that his chains be removed, and declares their past settled before deciding to take Lou with him 151 152.

He openly confirms his identities, accepts Lou, and promises Xiaoxiao that he will stay. Gao Ze publicly exposes the Great Demon’s impersonation and calls for unity against Nan Lou and the Sun God 153.

Divine War and Time Reversal

Ning Ke and his allies summon Heaven’s Way through the Twin Swords, organize domain training, and prepare a united human-demon resistance 155 160.

When the Sun God unleashes overwhelming divine fire and Jiang He kills Heaven’s Way, Ning Ke reverses the devastation, deaths, and destruction. The intervention costs three tails. He then fights Jiang He with Time Stop, foxfire, close combat, and charm resistance while urging Lou to remain focused on the Sun God 165.

He recognizes that reversal can also revive slain enemies and learns that losing Xiao Yuan would destroy his chance of returning home. Nevertheless, his companions’ resolve encourages him to risk everything. Further backlash leaves him with only three tails and a damaged body 166 170.

Return Home, Memories, and an Acting Career

Ning Ke returns to the modern world with his Qianyuan memories sealed. After a month unconscious, he discovers unexplained fighting skills, the persistent Purple Osmanthus Pattern, and trauma responses to violence. A hospital rescue video goes viral, leading his acting teacher to arrange an audition 179 180.

Lou finds him through the wrist pattern after two hundred years of separation from his own perspective and conceals himself in Buddhist Prayer Beads. Ning Ke initially mistakes him for a ghost. Jiu Yuan and the others organize modern cover identities to approach him without revealing their history 181 183.

Bai Wanru accompanies Ning Ke to the audition and privately warns Lou to respect his consent. Preparing the action scene breaks through his memory seal; he remembers Qianyuan, kisses the beads, and delivers an extraordinary sword performance. In the dramatic scene, he uses his real grief to move the director and secure the Shadow Guard role 186 187.

Although angry that his loved ones erased his memories and excluded him from the truth, Ning Ke chooses to play along with their reunion scheme. He affirms that he would still have undertaken his mission and eventually reunites with the whole family for a peaceful dinner and portrait 187 192.

Over five years, he develops a successful acting career while making regular time to show Lou his world. At thirty, he wins Best Actor and openly declares his love, saying that meeting Lou is the choice he regrets least 192.

Return to Qianyuan and Ascension

In the return-to-Qianyuan extra, Ning Ke awakens in a new body made from a lost fox tail. The continent has experienced several thousand years while his companions have continued growing stronger. Dual cultivation with Lou accelerates his progress from Golden Core to Nascent Soul and later Integration 194.

He celebrates Gao Ze and Hong Yao’s marriage, reunites with his family, and rejects a Childbearing Pill because he wants his life with Lou to belong to the two of them. After another dozen years, he catches up with his companions, and they ascend to the Divine Realm together 194.

Parallel-World Side Stories

The angst-and-captivity side story presents an alternate outcome and is separate from Ning Ke’s survival and ascension in the main continuity 194 199 206.

  • Lou imprisons Ning Ke after reaching the continent’s pinnacle, while Ning Ke suffers neglected wounds and destroyed cultivation. Some apparent slaughters of the Demon Clan are illusions, but Ning Ke cannot distinguish them from reality 199 202.
  • Ning Xiaoxiao helps remove Lou’s curses. Ning Ke ultimately annihilates his soul while giving his remaining strength to repair the continent’s rift, leaving no chance of reincarnation 205 206.
  • Heaven’s Way reveals the burden it placed on him, and the survivors witness his ancient sacrifices, solitary cultivation, the Flowing Cloud Sect tragedy, and A Ke’s self-detonation. Sword Sect disciples kneel in respect as Lou recognizes that he persecuted his own savior 210 211.
  • The tragic ending continues into the modern-world aftermath: Lou searches the Underworld but cannot find Ning Ke in the Book of Life and Death, confirming that his soul has scattered 216.
  • A separate “what if” variation has Lou identify Ning Ke’s intentions earlier, leading to open explanations, cooperation against the Great Demon, and Ning Ke’s departure after a sacrifice to heaven rather than the same captivity outcome 217 218.
