Players were a ruthless bunch, and petty to boot.
After someone had pulled a dirty trick on Little Knife, he held a grudge.
Against whom?
The people who had sent him the invitation, of course. Weren't his enemies' names written there, plain as day?
This chamber of commerce, that guild-obviously, the heads of those groups were plotting against him.
Little Knife immediately planned his next move. Even before the incident, he had been planning to establish a police force in Ankandela. After it happened, he picked up the pace.
The first batch of police officers were all players, newcomers who had joined after the game opened more testing slots following Little Knife's conquest of Ankandela. There weren't many in that initial batch, only about a thousand, just enough to serve as police and earn some pocket money.
Besides players, Little Knife also recruited from Ankandela's starving populace and the guards escorting transport convoys from Bolas. The former signed up eagerly, but the latter, whom he had hoped to poach, barely gave him the time of day. Even high wages failed to tempt them; they were devoted to serving Prince Chris.
This left Little Knife rather frustrated. Even with a generous salary of a hundred silver dollars a month, he had only persuaded a dozen or so convoy guards to leave their ranks.
Still, it wasn't a big deal. Three-legged toads might be hard to find, but there were plenty of two-legged people willing to draw a police salary.
With little trouble, Little Knife soon had the framework of the Ankandela Police Station in place, ready to patrol the city.
Now that he had the manpower, it was naturally time to take revenge.
First on the list, of course, were those who had dared spread rumors and snap up Little Knife's
