There had been signs of this. Since Chris returned to Bagnia, people in religious, political, and even military circles had hinted at it.
Alanka, Count Dirac Siso, the Republic's now-captured finance minister, and all sorts of other people, such as the envoys the Goddess of Agriculture's church had secretly sent to contact Chris, along with some local power brokers.
From them, Chris had obtained plenty of useful intelligence, which allowed him to verify many things both directly and indirectly. He had heard of schemes like this one, too.
In fact, as long as he kept winning, someone would always report to Chris with dirt on the losers: the bad things they had done, the plots they had hatched, and the shady deals they had made.
Chris could easily imagine that behind these fragments of information lay a vast, intricate web of conspiracies.
Unfortunately, Chris had no interest in it.
The conspirators' schemes were so crude that Chris hardly needed any evidence to know what they wanted to do. He was also quite certain that the ultimate result of their efforts was the Republic as it stood now.
Even without Chris intervening, this Republic certainly would not survive more than a few years. In other words, these shortsighted idiots' plans had already spiraled out of their control long ago.
