Chris stood by the window, watching Alia walk away, and shook his head.
He did not like the Goddess of Agriculture Church, but compared with the fanatical Earth Mother Goddess Church, it still had a few redeeming qualities. He needed the Goddess of Agriculture to keep the Earth Mother Goddess in check.
If possible, Chris would actually have preferred to establish a religion-free Bagnia.
All Chris had to do was recruit more players and issue them a bloody "Witch Hunt" quest. Given their drive, as long as he kept the rewards coming, they would surely slaughter every last monster and fiend in Bagnia.
But... why should Chris do that?
A thorough campaign to eradicate religion would be far too troublesome for Chris, and its repercussions would be severe.
Religion was the opium of the mind, something the Bagnians had relied on for spiritual support for generations. For most people, religion was not merely a faith, but a way of life and a source of solace.
Forcing through a policy of abolishing religion would not only cause social unrest, but also cost him the people's support. That would be extremely detrimental to Chris's rule.
To put it bluntly, even the Emperor in Warhammer 40K had failed to achieve that. What made Chris think he could?
The reason had been repeated many times: throughout history, anywhere in the world, there had only ever been one China. Earth had never produced a second, much less the Greek Continent in another world.
So even with the Earth Mother Goddess Church stirring up trouble, Chris had never considered wiping them out. Instead, he wanted to use the Goddess of Agriculture Church to counterbalance them and take over their current position.
At this point in the game, Chris no longer had the same mindset he had
