The Vanguard Players died off even faster than Chris had expected. They did not last twenty minutes. At fifteen minutes, they were finished.
The Minisians suddenly sent a cavalry unit onto the battlefield from the flank. Braving Bagnia's artillery bombardment, they charged the Vanguard Players regardless of the cost.
Clearly, the Minisians had realized the danger. If the enemy vanguard kept grinding away at them, they would have no chance to adjust their formation. When Bagnia's main army finally bore down on them, the consequences would be unimaginable.
So, although the Minisian commander could tell that the enemy vanguard was on its last legs, he still sacrificed a cavalry unit to buy a few minutes.
"Decisive indeed. What a shame..."
Through his telescope, Chris watched the last Vanguard Players, fewer than a hundred after the cavalry charge, disappear beneath the enemy's Spear Infantry Formation and dense hail of bullets. He deeply regretted their loss.
They should have held out for at least another ten minutes, until the Second Army Group's players advanced to meet them. The two forces could then have linked up seamlessly, keeping the pressure on the Minisians without giving them a moment to breathe.
