A ragged chorus rang out across the drill ground that had only been leveled the day before. Dressed in green with black caps on their heads, the militiamen shouldered heavy matchlocks as they practiced marching in formation.
Training an illiterate man was painful. Training a whole group of them was a disaster among disasters.
Just like now: when a bunch of roughnecks who could not even tell left from right practiced forming ranks, they could drive their instructors to an early grave.
So Chris had chosen men incapable of getting angry to serve as their instructors, and tied different-colored strips of cloth around their arms so they could tell left from right.
Four expressionless men carrying canes moved among them. Whenever they spotted a militiaman making a mistake, they walked over and struck his leg with enough force to hurt, but not enough to cause any actual injury.
