Background / History
The Lamia Snakefolk are known to senior church officials as an evil race from the swamps beyond the Greek Continent. Their arrival near Suvano initially appears to be a deliberate infiltration: a large snake-like creature crosses the siege camp, and the corpses recovered from a nearby cave are identified as Scaleclaw scouts 402.
Their occupation of Suvano involves mass human sacrifice, environmental corruption, and attacks on surrounding settlements. However, the captured prophet Slakma later offers a different explanation for their migration: the Snake-Men are seeking refuge from a coming calamity and trying to preserve their race 420 428 502.
According to Slakma, magic exposes the world to dangerous beings, while the Greek Continent—called the Shelter by his Mother—offers protection through its lack of magical elements and divine barrier. He identifies Nagsas as the Snake-Men’s progenitor and guide, claiming that she changed her form and bound herself to her people to shield them from disaster. These revelations explain their stated motive without negating the killings and sacrifices witnessed during their campaigns 502.
Appearance
Ordinary Snake-Men combine a muscular humanoid upper body with a serpentine lower body. Their size and coloration vary considerably between laborers, warriors, assassins, and clergy 401 434 442 468.
- Scales: Usually dark green or ocher, with a damp, oily sheen. Warriors have thicker scales; weakened individuals may have dull gray-green scales and sickly mottling 401 431 442.
- Head: Triangular and snake-like, with slit pupils, sharp fangs, and a scarlet forked tongue. Eye colors include dark gold, yellow, and gray-yellow 401 442.
- Arms and hands: Relatively short arms ending in broad hands with black, hooked claws 401.
- Lower body: A powerful tail used for slithering, lunging, and striking 401 436.
- Size: Initial cave specimens are nearly adult-human height; one large warrior rears to twice a person’s height 401 442.
- Assassins: Slender bodies and dark or pitch-black scales that blend into shadows 401 430 504.
- Clergy: Some have thick bodies, purple or dark-green scales, and painted ritual runes. Shamans at Casarina have multicolored scales 434 503.
Slakma’s exceptional form
- Slakma has human legs, pale skin, fine pearly-white scales, silver-white hair, and pale-golden slit pupils 502.
- His delicate, androgynous appearance and five-fingered hands distinguish him sharply from ordinary Snake-Men 502.
- His mostly human appearance surprises both his player captors and Bagnia’s naval officers 502 512.
Society and Organization
Racial hierarchy
Polka describes a clearly defined hierarchy. The listed ranks are not documented as a sequence of individual cultivation or level advancements 429.
| Rank | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Snake-Men | Lowest listed rank. Later encounters include scrawny laborers and underdeveloped young 429 468. |
| Snake-Man Warriors | Stronger, more heavily scaled fighters; some receive captured human armor 431 433. |
| Snake-Man Generals | Named as a rank by Polka; no specific general is described in the supplied encounters 429. |
| Snake-Man Priests | Conduct sacrifices and large-scale corruption rituals. Polka suspects several priests are needed to corrupt an entire city 429 434. |
| Snake-Man King | Highest rank in Polka’s stated hierarchy 429. |
Reproduction and settlements
- Snakefolk lay eggs, with a single clutch capable of producing many young 429.
- A Snakefolk Hatchery acts as a source and amplifier of corruption. Polka recommends locating and destroying one rather than relying solely on an attack against their leaders 429.
- Their occupied territory contains nests, cave networks, patrol routes, and sacrificial altars 424 427 468.
- Suvano’s central castle becomes the site of their main lair within an expanding slime lake 427.
Communication and command
- Patrols communicate efficiently through whistle-like hisses; ritual clergy use a serpentine language unintelligible to humans 427 434.
- Small groups coordinate frontal attacks with assassins striking from walls, shadows, or flanks 401.
- Their early mass assaults lack effective echelons, command nodes, and coordination between troop types despite their competent patrols and ambushes 433.
- Slakma can issue orders to the Casarina forces, including avoiding the player camp and abandoning a costly rescue attempt 505.
Abilities & Skills
Physical strength and mobility
- Snake-Men are naturally faster, stronger, and more agile than humans, making small encounters dangerous even for equipped players 436.
- Their tails coil and release like springs, producing sudden lunges and allowing their upper bodies to twist around attacks 401.
- They move particularly well through water and mud and can swim along coastal routes to bypass mountain barriers 426 427.
- Claws can tear through leather armor, while powerful blade strikes can break spear shafts and wooden shields 401 427.
- Agility allows some to leap over fortifications or vault shield walls, although prepared defenders can kill those who break through 430 431.
Scales and natural armor
- Ordinary scales provide protection comparable to high-quality leather armor, resisting sword cuts and offering useful defense against arrows 433.
- Warriors possess thicker scales, but the softer scales on their bellies remain vulnerable to stakes, spikes, and barbed wire 431.
- Scales do not provide reliable protection against firearm bullets, artillery, or grenade fragments 401 431 474.
Venom and magical toxins
- Their fangs are highly venomous; their weapons also include poisoned daggers, bone spikes, and arrows 401 427 430 503.
- Corrosive venom damages protective leather and can pit or melt human armor 436 440.
- Shamans channel poisonous green mist through snake-bone staffs fitted with glowing crystals 503.
- The Casarina mist weakens when the shamans are killed or forced to abandon their channeling 503.
Senses and stealth
- Snakefolk detect ground vibrations and heat, making them difficult to evade or track 429.
- Dark-scaled assassins move almost silently and exploit gaps in guards’ formations 401 430 504.
- At Naxi Fortress, sentries detect the heat-visible blood of a wounded demolition player, exposing the attackers 445.
- Warriors can also conceal themselves beneath swamp mud and time attacks for moments when an opponent’s weapon output declines 442.
Sacrificial corruption
- Their presence erodes soil and causes plants to wither or develop root rot 408.
- Sacrifices at altars thicken the surrounding mist and expand Suvano’s slime lake 427.
- A defensive blood ritual poisons air and water while making the swamp more disorienting and prone to hallucinations 434.
- Priests sacrifice both human captives and their own warriors to empower rituals 427 434.
- Byron warns that a direct attack on the central lair could trigger a mass sacrifice and summon their evil god. The players instead destroy it without entering 475 476.
Talisman-induced transformation
One Casarina assassin uses an obsidian-like talisman to transform during the attempt to recover Slakma 504.
- Crushing the talisman releases black smoke that enters the assassin’s body, enlarges its muscles, and increases its speed and strength 504.
- Black matter covers a wounded wrist, suggesting rapid regeneration or an apparently “undying” state 504.
- The transformation does not prevent structural damage: Dai Xi Hu disables its arms by severing tendons and joints, then kills it with a thrust through the skull 504.
Slakma’s prophetic gifts
- Slakma perceives limited, vague fragments of the future and knows that the attempted rescue will fail 505.
- He states that he cannot lie when directly questioned, though he may conceal truths when doing so benefits the questioner 505.
- He speaks fluent Chinese and recognizes the players as the otherworldly divine envoys described by his Mother 502.
- These abilities are documented for Slakma, not for ordinary Snake-Men 502 505.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black curved blades — Exceptionally sharp weapons made from an unfamiliar, stone-like material 401 402.
- Bone spikes and poisoned daggers — Assassin weapons capable of piercing chainmail or delivering lethal close-range attacks 401 430 504.
- Captured human arms and armor — Steel blades, greatswords, and Minisia-pattern armor; armor is limited mainly to stronger warriors 427 433 442 493.
- Bows, spears, harpoons, and bone knives — Used in camp assaults and seaborne attacks 440 503 531.
- Captured matchlocks — Deployed in coordinated volleys at Naxi Fortress 447.
- Snake-bone staffs — Crystal-tipped implements used by shamans to channel poison mist 503.
- Transformation talisman — An obsidian-like object used by one assassin to gain a stronger, grotesquely altered form 504.
- Sacrificial altars — Built from bones, black stones, and sludge; used to spread corruption 427.
- Sea Python — A domesticated sea beast whose internal cavity transports hundreds or thousands of warriors across oceans. Its supernatural red wave causes dead Snake-Men to produce venomous flesh cobras 494.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
| Weakness | Effective countermeasure |
|---|---|
| Scales vulnerable to modern weapons | Flintlocks, rifles, artillery, and grenades inflict heavy casualties 401 431 474. |
| Exposed serpentine underside | Stakes, caltrops, iron spikes, and low concertina wire injure and entangle their bellies 431. |
| Poor control of early mass charges | Layered obstacles and overlapping fire disrupt the vanguard and funnel following attackers into the same killing zones 433. |
| Susceptibility to fire | Flamethrowers kill concealed Snake-Men, disperse nearby poison fog temporarily, and frighten advancing warriors 436 494. |
| Incomplete adoption of firearms tactics | Naxi musketeers reload slowly and lack ready melee weapons, allowing players to overwhelm them after their first volley 447. |
| Dependence on swamp terrain and concealment | Logging, drainage, roads, and successive fortified positions remove the conditions needed for sustained ambush warfare 434 435 468. |
| Vulnerable central lair | Concentrated sulfuric acid corrodes its structure and disrupts its evil spiritual energy; fuel and fire complete its destruction 476. |
Relationships
- Nagsas — Slakma identifies her as the Snake-Men’s Mother, progenitor, guide, and sacrifice. Her idol depicts a huge, partially rotted serpent associated with slime and plague 502.
- Slakma — Divine Child and prophet whose capture prompts a major rescue operation. He orders the depleted Casarina forces to retreat 504 505.
- King Chris — Directs the campaign against Suvano’s lair and later increases search manpower and bounties to eliminate Snake-Men remaining on the Greek Continent 476 507.
- Holy Crusade Army — Principal opposing force in the Suvano campaign, combining firearms, fortifications, engineering, and chemical destruction 427 431 476.
- Minisia’s inhabitants — Victims of occupation, sacrifice, and displacement; survivors organize armed resistance with Bagnian support 420 428 443 448.
- Makon Alliance — Fights Snake-Men on Casarina Island but suffers major losses and the fall of the town 494 497 502.
- Giant venomous salamanders — Monsters found near Suvano’s central lake that attack the drainage operation. Their precise origin is uncertain; ritual creation is suggested but not confirmed 427 474.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc / Event | Role and outcome |
|---|---|
| Cave encounter | Home Alone’s hunters discover warriors and assassins instead of a giant snake. Most are killed; Mia’s reinforcements rescue the survivors with flintlock fire 401. |
| Threat identified | Polka recognizes Lamia Snakefolk and Scaleclaw scouting markings, prompting maximum camp alert 402. |
| Fall of Suvano | Mass sacrifice transforms the captured port into a swamp. Chris strengthens border readiness and prepares the Holy Crusade Army for war 420. |
| Crusader camp assault | A Snakefolk assassin nearly kills Diu Ni Leimu, but Polka shoots it. The larger night assault fails against firearms and layered obstacles, leaving roughly three to four thousand corpses 430 431 433. |
| Bulldozer Plan | Logging and roadbuilding strip away cover. Snake-Man priests intensify the swamp’s toxins, while players begin drainage and use protected flamethrower squads against repeated raids 434 435 436. |
| Northern advance | Snake-Men move toward Grayrock Pass and seize Naxi Fortress. Mountain Tiger players and Vigo’s Self-Rescue Army later annihilate the fortress’s defenders, suffering heavy losses themselves 439 440 444 448. |
| Decline in the swamp | Black-and-White Bear kills more than a hundred Snake-Men and observes their weakening. By late winter, warriors are rare and encounters increasingly involve laborers and young 442 443 468. |
| Destruction of the Suvano lair | After killing three giant salamanders, the attackers drain the central lake. Acid, waste oil, diesel, and fire destroy the lair before its gathered inhabitants can complete their final ritual 474 475 476. |
| First Casarina dock battle | A Sea Python delivers an underwater assault and creates venomous cobras from Snake-Man corpses. Player flamethrowers drive the attackers back, but only about two hundred of more than a thousand players remain combat-ready 494 495. |
| Casarina falls; Slakma captured | Snake-Men overrun the town. A player raid captures Slakma from a guarded nest, revealing their claimed search for refuge 502. |
| Failed rescue operation | A two-sided camp assault conceals five assassins sent to recover Slakma. Archaeologist and Dai Xi Hu kill them; Slakma orders the exhausted survivors to withdraw 503 504 505. |
| Aftermath and evacuation | Chris expands the hunt for possible continental survivors. Bagnia’s fleet transports Slakma from Casarina, and he remains cooperative during interrogation 507 512 520. |
| Renewed Casarina attack | A large force emerges from the sea with harpoons and bone knives, attacking docks and ships 531. |
