The Eternal Day Empire was rather different from what Li Chen had imagined.
The strictness of its caste system was plain to see in the differences in the skin tones and clothing of the people on the streets.
Li Chen had not noticed at first. Only while dining at an upscale restaurant called the Golden Rose did he learn the intricacies from an enthusiastic waiter.
"Honored guests, this is our specially made Moonlight Wine." The young waiter, Hans, respectfully poured wine for everyone. His light brown skin and somewhat rough hands marked him as a commoner.
When Li Chen casually tipped him a few gold coins, Hans was overwhelmed by the unexpected favor. The money was not given for nothing; Li Chen wanted to learn about the local customs. Although he had read a great deal of material, a local was bound to know more.
On this incognito inspection, he also wanted to see just what sort of country the Eternal Day Empire really was.
With a tip in his pocket, Hans became more talkative.
Lowering his voice, Hans discreetly pointed at a man in white robes dining nearby. "Sir, look over there. That is Lord Rahm, a man of a high-ranking surname. Did you notice the gold band on his wrist? Only members of the upper castes may wear such ornaments."
Li Chen asked with interest, "Oh? You divide people into different grades here too?"
Hans hurriedly gestured for silence, then explained cautiously, "There are roughly four castes. The highest are the Holy Scions, said to be descendants of the ancient Divine Race. Next come the nobles, then the commoners. At the very bottom are..."
