Background / History

Family and Sect Upbringing

Nalan Yanran was treated like a princess from childhood and enjoys substantial resources from the Nalan Family. She became the Misty Cloud Sect master's personal disciple and spends time in the Magical Beast Forest with her master every year. These excursions led her to habitually keep daily necessities in her Storage Ring 28 31 34.

Breaking the Engagement

With her sect master's approval, Nalan Yanran travels to the Xiao Clan to end her engagement to Xiao Yan. Ge Ye advises her to let him handle the discussion and warns that publicly breaking the engagement could damage her father and grandfather's reputation. She insists that she will not marry someone she dislikes 28.

Lin Dong intercepts them outside Wutan City. Identifying himself as Xiao Yan's older brother, he demands the marriage agreement and compensation so that the engagement can end without a public confrontation at the Xiao Clan. Nalan Yanran rejects his interference and attacks him with her sword 29.

Lin Dong catches her blade with his dragon-scaled hand, injures her sword hand, and disarms her. He then restrains and repeatedly spanks her, provoking Ge Ye to intervene. Nalan Yanran watches in shock as Lin Dong defeats the Da Dou Shi deacon and obtains the marriage agreement and Qi Gathering Powder 29 30.

The Three-Year Agreement

Lin Dong initially proposes a match between Nalan Yanran and Xiao Yan in three years. Instead, she challenges Lin Dong himself to a fight to the death atop Misty Cloud Mountain, seeking revenge for her humiliation 30 31.

Lin Dong objects to the death-match terms because killing her would expose him to retaliation from both her family and sect. He also rejects her offer to become his slave if defeated. When he requests pills as compensation for accepting the challenge, she refuses to surrender sect resources and offers her family's unique ancestral Storage Ring instead. He accepts the ring and agrees to fight her in three years 31.

Nalan Yanran helps the injured Ge Ye leave, departing on a Redblood Dragon Horse. Lin Dong subsequently describes their agreement to Xiao Yan as a fight to the death; Xiao Yan promises to grow stronger and personally support him when it takes place 31 32.

The Storage Ring Dispute

After leaving, Nalan Yanran realizes that the ring still contains her personal supplies, including undergarments. Her anger intensifies, and she vows to kill Lin Dong. Meanwhile, Lin Dong opens the locked boxes containing those belongings and concludes that he must strengthen himself before their duel 34 35.

Her wounded pride drives her rivalry with Lin Dong. After he humiliates her, she loses interest in the original engagement dispute and focuses on defeating him personally. Although willing to offer her own ancestral ring to secure the duel, she refuses to give him the Misty Cloud Sect's resources 31.

She is also meticulous with her possessions. Her Storage Ring is organized into separate areas for medicine, weapons and techniques, and money and jewelry; her private clothing is kept in locked boxes 34.
