Background / History

Gu Yuan placed Xun’er in the Xiao Clan’s care more than a decade before Xiao Xuan’s return. He instructed its leadership to conceal her identity, which remained known only to Xiao Zhan and the core elders. Xiao Yan consequently grew up believing that she belonged to a collateral branch of his clan 5 13.

Xun’er and Xiao Yan became childhood sweethearts, with feelings extending beyond friendship. Throughout his three years of declining cultivation and public ridicule, she continued encouraging him. She also secretly asked Ling Ying to examine him, although even her Dou Emperor protector could not discover why his Dou Qi vanished 11.

Personality

Xun’er is patient and attentive toward Xiao Yan. She arranges a stroll to lift his spirits before his coming-of-age ceremony and waits half a day while he accompanies Xiao Xuan inside the residence. She accepts his apology without anger and celebrates the restoration of his talent 1 11.

Her loyalty extends to those who serve her: she offers a treasured Gu Clan technique to save Ling Ying. Although protective of her father and birth clan, she does not deny their mistreatment of the Xiao Clan. After being confined, she argues that wrongdoing must be acknowledged rather than escaped 14 15.

She is also pragmatic about her limits. Once Xiao Xuan prevents their warning from reaching the Gu Clan, she discourages Ling Ying from attempting another escape. Her concealment of her cultivation reflects a similar desire to avoid unnecessary attention, though Xiao Xuan interprets it as evidence of the Gu family’s calculating nature 15 20.
