Ever since humanity first encountered the Great Devourer, they had never understood the true enormity of what they faced.
In the dark, endless depths of the void, hundreds of millions of Tyranid creatures traveled toward the Milky Way without pause, consuming energy equivalent to three suns every second merely to sustain their existence.
No one knew where the Great Devourer had arisen, nor how many galaxies it had devoured. Even the Haemonculus masters of Commorragh, unrivaled in biotechnology, could glimpse only a fraction of the truth within its complex gene pools.
Strictly speaking, the Tyranid Swarm had no true "standard troops." Whenever it encountered a new enemy, it evolved the creatures best suited to fighting them.
Perhaps the Astartes had successfully defended every strategic position and repelled the surging tide, but the losses they inflicted were nowhere near as great as what the Tyranid Swarm consumed.
When the Great Devourer arrived, the hive mind known as the "Shadow in the Warp" choked the entire Warp. The Warp filled with the hive's howls and the sounds of slicing claws, and the Great Devourer's will alone was enough to drive ordinary psykers mad.
Then came the hive forces, blotting out the sky as they attacked. Their numbers dwarfed those of the planets themselves, and they gnawed through everything in their path, leaving only a few utterly worthless rocks behind.
Yet even the most astute scholars had never imagined that the Great Devourer could not control the Tyranids through those few invading tendrils alone. Even a hive lord's mind could easily be burned out by the sheer immensity of its will.
The Ancient Ship
An enormous bio-ship unknown to all, the Great Devourer's direct manifestation in the Milky Way, the annihilator of countless civilizations.
Or it had another name, one more fitting to
