"I... don't know either."
Hayashi looked down at the purple chakra coiling around him and answered honestly.
"Before I got out of bed, there was nothing there. But the moment my feet touched the floor, this... Zabuza's killing aura burst out."
He was just as bewildered himself.
"As for why-I don't know."
Kakashi said nothing.
He circled Hayashi again and again, narrowing the eye above his mask as he scanned him from head to toe several times.
Just then-
"The enemy! Where's the enemy?!"
The shouting grew louder, accompanied by pounding footsteps, as Naruto and Sasuke came rushing back, out of breath.
Naruto shoved the door open and took up a fighting stance-
Then he, too, froze in the doorway.
Purple chakra, laden with a killing aura that made their scalps prickle, filled the entire room.
And at the center of that aura stood Hayashi.
"Huh...?"
Naruto's mouth hung open for a long moment.
"H-Hayashi...? That killing aura is coming from... you?"
He was about to rush forward-
"Naruto, don't talk." Kakashi raised a hand to stop him. "Let me take a look first."
Sasuke leaned against the doorway without a word.
At some point, one hand had settled on his kunai. After he saw what was happening inside, he slowly relaxed his grip.
But his eyes remained fixed on the purple haze surrounding Hayashi.
"Get back into bed," Kakashi said.
"Okay."
Sakura hurried to help. Hayashi shifted back onto the bed, settled into a sitting position, and tucked his feet up-
Whoosh.
The purple chakra filling the room vanished in an instant, taking every trace of the killing aura with it.
Hayashi silently quipped to himself.
Feet off the ground, brain switched off-no, killing aura switched off.
Naruto and Sasuke exchanged looks.
Kakashi rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"Get down."
