Background / History
Founding
According to the sect’s tradition, its founding patriarch entered the Heavenly Emperor’s ancient palace at Kunlun by chance and brought out five Creation Divine Lotuses. He established the Five Lotus Sect around these treasures, which were said to contain the supreme power of creation 6 26.
The twenty-eight peaks originally divided responsibility for cultivating different lotus varieties. Successive generations developed the divine lotuses’ seeds into plants with specialized cultivation uses, making lotus-derived products the backbone of the sect’s industry 6.
Alignment with Immortal Zhou
The Five Lotus Sect was formerly regarded as an evil or heretical sect. After witnessing Emperor Tianwu on the battlefield at Fragrant Incense, Jiang Taiyi persuaded its patriarch to align with Immortal Zhou and the Western Lands’ Orthodox School. This change helped the sect shed its former reputation 5 8 40.
True Lord Fragrance, also called Wenxiang True Lord, opposed this decision. As Yaochi Peak’s head and a descendant of Great Xuan’s imperial family, she supported resistance to the new dynasty. The sect expelled her to demonstrate its allegiance to Immortal Zhou 49 54.
Fragrance returned to Kunlun and organized a resistance force known as the White Lotus Sect, named after her White Lotus Scripture of Deliverance. Jiang Taiyi eventually defeated and killed her after three major battles, refining the Heaven-Questioning Pavilion’s spiritual vein to restore his Taiyi Sword God. Her disciples remained within the Five Lotus Sect, and their lineage continued to regard Taiyi Peak as an enemy 3 49.
Organization

| Institution / Position | Function |
|---|---|

Disciple Hierarchy
- Outer disciples — Recruits judged to have relatively mediocre aptitude, spiritual roots, or talent. Their spiritual treasures and resources are leftovers from the inner sect 2.
- Outer-sect senior brother — Receives priority when exchanging for a Foundation Establishment spirit treasure. At Hanging Moon Peak, the position also includes organizing elders’ lectures, creating opportunities for favors and influence 1 2.
- True Disciples — Receive superior teachings, including a Taiyi Scripture edition with twelve Qi Refinement layers rather than the ordinary nine 10.
- Inner-Chamber True Disciples — Exceptional recruits can enter this category without first becoming outer disciples, as Song Lingxi did 7.
- Branch contract workers — May bear the title of branch disciple without formally entering the sect or joining its permanent staffing roster. Xiong Meng initially holds this status 29 58.
Family connections also influence placement. Descendants of the Yiyang Li lineage are assigned to Hanging Moon Peak because its ancestor, Li Fulai, and peak master Wen Weilan were fellow disciples of Jiang Taiyi 7.
Discipline and Emergency Calls
- Lotus summons have seven grades; blue is the lowest. Nearby disciples who see one must report immediately, and absences are recorded 29.
- Soul Lamps allow the sect to detect disciples’ deaths. Six lamps extinguishing simultaneously triggered the Zhao Kingdom Branch’s maritime investigation 29.
- Enforcement penalties can include confiscation of wealth and exile to the Great Wilderness. Huang Shu pursues violations even when the accused is a Golden Core cultivator 53.
- Formal investigations use recorded questioning and Huang Shu’s Lionheart Insight to test testimony 53.
Cultivation Inheritances
Taiyi Scripture
Jiang Taiyi’s Taiyi Scripture produces balanced, harmonious magical power. Its practitioners can switch to any of the sect’s five Primordial Spirit arts without adverse consequences 5.
| Version / Portion | Access and Scope |
|---|---|
| Ordinary disciple edition | Contains nine Qi Refinement layers; Li Yu’s available text extends through early Foundation Establishment 9 10 |
| True Disciple edition | Contains twelve Qi Refinement layers, providing a stronger foundation for later advancement 10 |
| Further Foundation Establishment material | Requires payment and an elder’s endorsement 9 |
| Golden Core portion | Requires special permission or perfected Foundation Establishment 9 |
| Nascent Soul portion | Held only by the peak masters of Taiyi Peak and Hanging Moon Peak 9 |
- Taiyi Starshine strengthens divine sense through repeated use. Sect disciples who master it have substantially better Foundation Establishment success rates 21.
- Micro-Yi Qi Control can refine artifacts and improve control over talismans; Li Yu uses it to overwrite an artifact’s previous refinement imprint 17.
- Proven cultivation ceiling — Jiang Taiyi reached Nascent Soul perfection, but Li Yu knows of no demonstrated Primordial Spirit breakthrough through the scripture 12.
Five Primordial Spirit Arts
The sect possesses five great Primordial Spirit cultivation arts, treated as closely guarded secrets. Even Wen Weilan, a chief-seat Golden Core cultivator, cannot obtain a complete copy to study 11 12.
- White Lotus Scripture of Deliverance — Practiced by True Lord Fragrance; its name supplied the identity of her post-expulsion resistance force 49.
- Restricted instruction — Seeking lessons from a Transmission Elder requires a tuition gift, contrasting with the Galaxy Alliance’s widely available educational material 11.
Yellow Sand Sword Formation
Zhao Qian teaches Li Yu the Yellow Sand Obscures the Sun Sword Formation after accepting him as a nominal disciple 54 55.
- Uses Yellow Sand Swords that separate into controlled grains of sand, concealing a lethal cutting edge 55.
- Li Yu’s two-sword version is limited to first-tier power because he lacks additional swords and a Sun-Obscuring Sword Pouch 55.
Resources and Industry
Divine Lotuses and Derived Products
- Creation Divine Lotuses — The sect’s five most precious spiritual treasures. Li Yu reports that they can combine with taiyi primordial qi to produce taiyi immortal qi; Su Wen considers this a possible clue to an ancient immortal site 6 26.
- Moonlight Pure-Heart Lotus seeds — Refined into Pure-Heart Pills that help prevent cultivation deviation 6.
- Moonlight Pure-Heart Lotus roots — Used in soup that clears the mind 6.
- Moonlight Pure-Heart Lotus leaves — Specially dried to make talisman paper 6.
- Pure Heart Lotus spirit artifact — Combines offense and defense. Ying Ruomu’s specimen can impersonate a Mystic Heart Lotus and intercept Locator Talisman signals; investigators trace its manufacture to Zheng Shu of Sun-Spitting Peak 33 53.
- Mystic Heart Lotus — Receives coordinates transmitted by Locator Talismans during search operations 32.
Maritime and Transport Operations
- Pearl fishery — Located in sect-controlled waters south of the Zhao Kingdom’s waters. Qi Refinement disciples receive missions to gather spiritually charged pearls from the deep sea 9.
- Controlled access — Formations protect the pearl-harvesting grounds; disciples must obtain a pass from the local office, and entry and exit records can be checked 17 29.
- Supreme-grade Spirit Pearls — Suitable as Foundation Establishment spiritual treasures; one can be worth at least ten thousand spirit stones 9 17.
- Flying ships — Provide sect-operated travel. No force in the Eastern Lands had dared rob one during the preceding century 10.
- Sword Embryo procurement — The sect ordered a shipment from the Gentleman Kingdom in the Southern Lands; its seizure became an External Affairs mission 9.
Zhao Kingdom Branch
The branch operates from a five-story office in Hao City, providing mission reporting, pearl-ground passes, and accommodation assistance. The Zhao Kingdom itself belongs to the Rizhao Hao Clan, not the Five Lotus Sect 9 17.
| Member | Position / Role |
|---|---|
| Zhao Qian | Golden Core branch steward; accepts Li Yu as a nominal disciple and begins rebuilding control after Yuan Hao’s scandal 29 54 57 |
| Ding Shuang | Golden Core deputy steward 29 |
| Yuan Hao | Late Foundation Establishment deputy steward who handled most daily affairs; detained for further investigation after lying during interrogation 29 53 |
| Zhao Qing | Zhao Qian’s grandniece and branch subordinate; works alongside Li Yu under his orders 57 58 |
| Cao Yi | Handles Li Yu’s request to transfer Xiong Meng and supplies information about changes in branch personnel 58 |
| Li Yu | Assigned to investigate Yuan Hao’s thirty-year network and identify remaining accomplices 58 |
| Xiong Meng | Former counter contract worker promoted to assist Li Yu; contributes knowledge of branch personnel and relationships 58 |
- Zhao Qian’s disinterest in administration allowed Yuan Hao’s associates to fill the branch’s ranks 54.
- After the scandal, some personnel were removed, transferred, retired, or disappeared. Remaining Foundation Establishment officials feared both implication in the case and Zhao Qian’s consolidation of power 58.
- Li Yu’s appointment includes a monthly housing allowance of 25 spirit stones, subject to paperwork review, and an office supplied with third-tier spiritual qi 58 59.
Relationships
- Immortal Zhou Dynasty / Orthodox School — Historical political alignment established through Jiang Taiyi. The sect had not publicly clarified its position on the latest Heavenly Change Sect rebellion by the time of Li Yu’s conversation with Lu Dan 8 59.
- Rizhao Hao Clan — Neighboring ally despite occasional border friction. The clan’s Zhao Kingdom hosts the sect’s branch and a major port used for maritime trade 9.
- Mount Lao Sword Sect — Friendly ally targeted by a plot to manufacture hostility between the two sects. Yuan Hao’s schemes nearly caused a war 33 57.
- White Lotus Church / Sect — Resistance movement founded by the expelled True Lord Fragrance. Her retained disciples created a lasting internal rivalry, while Yuan Hao’s claimed inheritance raised concerns about hidden remnants 49 54.
- Heavenly Change Sect — Solicits participation in a Kunlun alliance to overthrow Immortal Zhou and restore Great Xuan. Five Lotus elders are divided over supporting the powerful figure connected to Yin Ya 7 8.
- Yiyang Li lineage — Descended from Jiang Taiyi’s disciple Li Fulai; its members retain a weakening patronage connection to Hanging Moon Peak 3 7.
Major Story Events
Hanging Moon Peak Succession
After Li Yu fails Foundation Establishment, Elder Wu removes him as head senior brother and appoints Zeng Yang. Competition for the next scarce Foundation Establishment treasure intensifies between Zeng Yang and Yin Ya 1 2.
Kunlun Invitation
Ge Jin gives Li Yu and Yin Ya a mission connected to the Heavenly Change Sect’s restorationist gathering. The document has no sect markings, leading Li Yu to conclude that the Five Lotus Sect could deny responsibility if the venture failed. He refuses to participate and takes distant missions to avoid possible mobilization 7 8 9.
Maritime Conspiracy
Six disciples’ extinguished Soul Lamps prompt a compulsory search. Five are confirmed to have sailed with Ying Ruomu, and four additional passengers remain missing, including two Rizhao Hao Clan members. The expedition enters Mount Lao waters with representatives from that sect 29 32.
Ying Ruomu and Ying Feiyun attempt to frame Mount Lao disciples for robbery and murder. Li Yu kills both brothers, while Luo Guan dies and Qin Jian and Xu Wei survive. The resulting dispute exposes the possibility of an accomplice within the Hao City branch 36 39 40 41.
Enforcement Investigation and Branch Reorganization
Zhao Qian seals Yuan Hao’s cultivation pending investigation. Huang Shu subsequently exposes Yuan Hao’s false testimony, names him the prime suspect, and takes him back to the sect. Li Yu’s disclosure of Yuan Hao’s claimed Wenxiang inheritance leads Huang Shu to pursue a soul search 41 53 54.
Zhao Qian recruits Li Yu to help repair the branch, promises cultivation support, and assigns him to investigate Yuan Hao’s remaining network. No official announcement of Yuan Hao’s arrest has been issued by the time Li Yu discusses the wider rebellion with Lu Dan 54 57 58 59.
Trivia
- Disciples traveling outside the sect are often called “lotus-raising cultivators” because of its distinctive industry 6.
