Profanation
In late June and early July that year, "Profanation" finished its run. As one of Misty Rain's many fans, I missed the days when we read and talked about books together in the Profanation forum. Many others felt much the same at the time, but once the bustle passed, everything gradually sank into silence...
Perhaps we could confidently say that "Profanation" was a model of success in the virtual VIP market. Perhaps we could also say that it maintained a certain artistic standard while achieving commercial success. Perhaps critics would judge it with phrases like "hooligan literature" and "moral bankruptcy." But the likelier outcome was that, two or three years later, this book, together with the virtual glory it enjoyed, would be forgotten like discarded junk at the margins of reality and the internet, just as its predecessors had been. Eight years of original online fiction, tens of thousands of writers-could it really be as Rog said: all the world's myriad things and dazzling colors were nothing but delusions of the human heart?
No one could say clearly what the future would bring. Amid our constant forgetting, we could only struggle to hold on to a few things we believed worth remembering.
