Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Demon Monster |
| Original Name | 魔怪 |
| Species/Race | Monsters formed through demonic qi, ordinarily by corrupting mortal-world creatures 33. |
| Origin | Demonic contamination; the Demon Sword can also generate monsters and animate corpses 29 44 70. |
| Known Locations | Ailin County, Ailin Old City, Little Hidden Temple, and the Hall Department battlefield 29 34 70. |
| Occupation/Role | Persistent threat to Ailin’s inhabitants and targets of Azure Mystic–Wu Army extermination patrols 29 54. |
| First Appearance | Demonic infection is described in Chapter 29; Demon Monsters are explicitly defined in Chapter 33 and encountered in combat in Chapter 34 29 33 34. |
Nature and Origins
- Corrupted creatures: Humans and wild beasts infected by demonic qi become Demon Monsters. Contamination can persist in mountains, rivers, soil, and water long after a Demon Calamity’s source has been sealed 29 33.
- Condensed manifestations: During the Little Hidden Temple incident, the Demon Sword’s surrounding qi condenses into corpse-like monsters that repeatedly attack Chunji’s protective boundary 44 45.
- Animated remains: The sword’s evil spirit can pour demonic qi into dead bodies to create monsters. Incomplete corpses and severed limbs can merge into grotesque composite bodies 70 71.
- Renewed contamination: Demonic qi dispersed by a dying True Demon can cling to nearby objects, contaminate soil and water, and produce further Demon Monsters if left untreated 42.
Distinction from True Demons
| Feature | Demon Monsters | True Demons |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Ordinarily mortal creatures corrupted by demonic qi; sword-generated and corpse-animated forms also occur 33 44 70. | Beings born in the Demon Abyss from condensed demonic energy 33 40. |
| Strength | Ranges from ordinary soldier-level creatures to documented Gang Force equivalents 45 58. | Even the weakest rival Qi Refining cultivators 33. |
| Remains | Leave bodies that can be examined and harvested for identifying trophies 34 37. | Leave no corpse; their demonic energy disperses, leaving a gemlike true core 42. |
Strength Classification
Demon Monsters have no cultivation system of their own. Terms such as Inner Force and Transforming Force are rough comparisons with cultivator realms, not stages the monsters are shown cultivating through 37.
| Classification | Documented Strength | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | Some are no stronger than mortal soldiers; Transforming Force cultivators can kill them with single sword strikes or hammer blows 45 59. | Lesser dried corpses accompanying stronger monsters 36. |
| Inner Force / Early Embryonic Breath equivalent | Outclass ordinary troops but can be dispatched rapidly by skilled higher-stage cultivators 36 37. | One of the two monsters Jiang Che initially faces during the Corpse Tide battle 36. |
| Transforming Force / Mid Embryonic Breath equivalent | Dangerous in groups; winged specimens can deliver aerial surprise attacks 35 45 56. | Flying corpse monsters, mutated attackers, and a composite creature assembled from several bodies 45 56 71. |
| Gang Force / Late Embryonic Breath equivalent | Powerful enough that Hu Yan avoids casually meeting its heavy hammer head-on 58. | A human-torsoed, wolf-bodied monster defeated through Jiang Che and Hu Yan’s coordinated attacks 58 59. |
Appearance
- Humanoid corpses: Many resemble dried or desiccated human bodies 35 36.
- Beast forms: Documented monsters resemble giant crows and vicious dogs; another has an iron tail 36 46.
- Winged forms: A tall corpse-like specimen has crippled wings growing from its shoulders 45.
- Mutated limbs: One Transforming Force monster possesses a blade-like arm 56.
- Hybrid forms: The Gang Force specimen stands more than ten feet tall, with a muscular human upper body and a giant wolf’s lower body. It wields a massive stone-headed hammer 58.
- Composite forms: Reanimated remains can fuse into twisted bodies, including a bloated monster assembled from four or five mangled corpses 70 71.
- Spiritual appearance: Under the Bodhi Heart Lamp, each monster appears as a mass of solid black flame 56.
Abilities and Behavior
Physical Attacks
- Attack through pounces, claws, mutated limbs, tails, and—in the Gang Force specimen’s case—a heavy weapon 45 46 56 58.
- Winged monsters can hide among a horde before lunging at an opponent’s exposed back 36.
- Stronger monsters can break military formations, allowing lesser creatures to overwhelm scattered soldiers 56.
Swarming and Persistence
- Attack despite a clear strength disadvantage and show utter disregard for death 46.
- Their movements are comparatively rigid and predictable. Once understood, they are easier to counter than cultivators of equivalent strength, who possess techniques, experience, and tactical judgment 46.
- Monsters fleeing or hiding during a sweep can reappear in supposedly cleared districts, preventing lasting security 37.
- Continuous monster generation can exhaust defenders even when individual enemies are easily killed 44 46.
Nocturnal Strength
- Demon Monsters are far more powerful at night; their activity drops by more than half after dawn 54.
- Ailin patrols therefore shelter in supply camps overnight and resume extermination work during daylight 54.
Selective Non-Aggression
- Monsters fighting alongside Qian Ze do not attack him, even after Jiang Che cripples him 56 57.
- Jiang Che observes no actual direction or coordination from Qian Ze. He suspects temporary protection associated with an unfamiliar black vapor and the hooded “Master,” rather than direct monster control 58.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Physical Vulnerabilities
- Sword strikes to the throat, neck, head, and heart can kill documented corpse-like specimens 36 45 46.
- Predictable lunges allow Jiang Che to borrow an attacker’s momentum and strike its vulnerable points with successive counterattacks 46.
- The Gang Force hybrid’s weak point lies where its human torso joins its beast body. Striking it causes severe injury but does not kill it immediately 59.
Buddhist Techniques
- Golden Blossom Protective Boundary: Monsters crumble to ash on contact, although each impact consumes Chunji’s magical power. Sufficient numbers can steadily drain the defender 44 45.
- Candlelight Thousand-Jin Finger: Its demon-subduing effect makes it especially effective against Demon Monsters. Jiang Che kills Transforming Force specimens with single strikes and grievously wounds the Gang Force hybrid 56 59.
- Bodhi Heart Lamp: Reveals demonic qi and helps Jiang Che identify the Gang Force monster’s vulnerable point 52 56 59.
Extermination Procedures
- Soldiers use fire to drive monsters from buildings, followed by crossbow fire and cultivator attacks 34.
- After a True Demon’s death, contaminated objects are gathered and burned where possible. Internal force is used to wear away demonic energy in objects that cannot be burned 42.
Background / History
Fourteen years before the present Ailin campaign, the Demon Sword generated waves of monsters outside Little Hidden Temple. Their repeated attacks drained Master Chunji’s protective boundary while he struggled to suppress the sword. Jiang Che fought them along the boundary’s edge during his visits to this historical instance, but their continuing regeneration eventually exhausted him 44 45 46.
Seven years before the campaign, Ailin suffered a Demon Calamity. Azure Mystic sealed the fissures connecting the region to the Demon Abyss, but residual demonic qi remained throughout the environment. Infected humans and beasts continued threatening the rebuilt county despite years of extermination efforts 29.
During the siege of Little Hidden Temple, Azure Mystic disciples and armored soldiers cleared monster-infested buildings around the ruins. Several squads became entangled in a large Corpse Tide battle, ultimately killing nearly a hundred monsters, including twenty-two at Embryonic Breath-equivalent strength. Monsters nevertheless returned to previously cleared areas. The remaining creatures around the temple were eliminated after the True Demon’s defeat 34 35 36 37 42.
Later, monsters participated in coordinated ambushes against the patrol companies of Jiang Che, Zhang Erguo, and Hu Yan. Traitorous company commanders attacked their own disciples while the hordes overwhelmed the troops. Jiang Che and Zhang Erguo subsequently rescued Hu Yan, helping her defeat the Gang Force hybrid leading the monsters surrounding her 56 57 58 59 60.
At the Hall Department, the evil spirit possessing Steward Wei animated battlefield corpses to attack Jiang Che while he chanted scripture against it. Zhang Erguo defended him as increasingly powerful monsters formed, including Transforming Force specimens. Jiang Che and Zhang ultimately killed six Embryonic Breath-equivalent monsters in this confrontation 70 71 72.
Rewards and Resources
Extermination Merit
- Ears or other identifying parts from Embryonic Breath-equivalent monsters serve as trophies for claiming merit 37.
- Such trophies retain a distinctive aura and scent, allowing their strength classification to be recognized even when they resemble ordinary remains 37.
- Ordinary monsters did not count toward merit in the recorded Corpse Tide tally 37.
Transmigration Energy
Jiang Che can absorb transmigration energy from recently dead Demon Monsters nearby, including creatures killed by others 34 72.
| Monster Strength | Approximate Energy Yield |
|---|---|
| Early Embryonic Breath equivalent | About one point—roughly one-third of the yield from a comparable human cultivator 34 37. |
| Mid Embryonic Breath / Transforming Force equivalent | About three points, compared with roughly eight from a comparable human cultivator 37. |
| Gang Force equivalent | Described as a substantial contribution; no separate numerical yield is given 59. |
- Absorption requires proximity shortly after death. Energy missed because Jiang Che is too far away cannot be collected later 72.
- People forcibly elevated by demonic qi, including the Converted Evil Monks, yield reduced energy and are compared to another breed of Demon Monster rather than conventional cultivators 72.
