Konohamaru concentrated, committing every word to memory.
Light gradually kindled in his once-dull, dispirited eyes, and his gaze slowly grew resolute.
He bowed deeply, his tone solemn. "Thank you for your guidance, Lord Hokage! I understand now! I won't run away anymore. I'll stabilize the Sarutobi Clan through my own efforts!"
"Go on." Naruto waved a hand. "Walk your own path."
Konohamaru did not leave. Instead, he stood still, his expression grave, having already settled on a complete plan in his heart.
Naruto's advice had utterly shattered the last traces of wishful thinking he had harbored.
If he wanted to rebuild the Sarutobi Clan, he could no longer let it limp along under someone else's protection. He had to take decisive measures, sever every special privilege it had enjoyed, and bring the entire clan under Konoha's laws.
He looked up at Naruto, seated at the head of the room, and spoke with unwavering conviction. "Lord Hokage, from now on, I hope you won't show the Sarutobi Clan any more leniency. Please be as firm as possible."
Naruto gave a slight, expressionless nod and replied calmly, "I know where to draw the line. A little while ago, I had the Military Police Force deal with several clan members who violated the regulations, in accordance with the rules."
"That's nowhere near enough." Konohamaru shook his head slightly, cutting Naruto off, his eyes full of ruthless resolve.
"I know perfectly well that you've been quietly favoring us out of regard for your old ties with my grandfather."
"The elders in the clan saw through that long ago. They've been relying on those unspoken privileges to do whatever they please, without any restraint, certain that they won't face any serious punishment in the end."
At that, Konohamaru bowed deeply and solemnly made his request.
