"What a slick bastard!"
The young man riding the ox pulled out the bottle hanging at his waist and poured crimson black ox blood over his head. He quickly smeared it over himself, then jumped straight into the fog.
If he turned back, Su Nian would kill him. Ahead, the Yellow Wraith was Petitioning for a Title. Right now, his only way out was the Gray Fog.
With so many living people ahead, the Yellow Wraith couldn't possibly pursue him.
An ordinary survivor would certainly die upon entering the Gray Fog, but a prepared Awakened might survive for a short while. He only needed to circle around behind the Yellow Wraith, and he would be fine.
The yellow weasel merely glanced at the churning fog before walking straight ahead.
Su Nian also slit the throat of the gun-wielding girl who hadn't quite died yet, sparing her further suffering. After all, Wen Kele's poison wouldn't kill her anytime soon.
He was helping put an end to her pain. What boundless merit.
[Ding! Gained 300 Survival Points.] [Survival Points: 2,790]
Su Nian spent eight hundred Survival Points to raise his constitution and spirit by one point each, replenishing his depleted stamina and mental energy.
[Constitution: 30] [Spirit: 30] [Survival Points: 1,990]
Today's battle proved that prioritizing constitution and spirit was the right path.
Constitution and spirit delivered an immediate boost to his survivability.
They were all Sequence Eight, yet he had killed his opponents in an instant. Without improving his constitution and spirit, today's fight would have been difficult. That hunched old man and voluptuous woman had clearly been targeting him.
If he died, it would only be a matter of time before Hao Ren and the others were slaughtered.
Was this the world of the Awakened? It devoured people, bones and all.
He had made a fatal mistake tonight: hiding behind someone else.
He couldn't do that again. He needed to bring Su Yue along to hide with him. Hiding alone made it all too easy to be discovered.
The Big Black Bull still stood obediently where it was, probably because of the young rider's orders. When Su Nian led it away, it was exceptionally docile and didn't resist at all, nothing like the ferocious beast that had charged Hao Ren earlier.
Black ox blood was good stuff. It warded off evil even better than black dog blood.
Heart-wrenching sobs and wails filled the road.
"Waaah... Mom, I miss you."
"Ah... Hahaha... Why haven't I awakened? So many people have awakened, so why not me? It's not fair... Waaah."
"I might as well die. There's no point in living. I paid 388,000 to marry my wife, and I got transported here before I even slept with her. Then she ran off with someone else after we arrived. Waaah."
Some people kept crying even after they could barely breathe. Deep within every person's soul lurked a strand of black energy.
Some were faint, while others had already turned a deep black, especially those who were crying themselves breathless.
The main group moved down the road like a long dragon. At the rear, survivors on foot fled in a mass, terrified of falling to the very back and being eaten.
The only vehicles left on the road were Su Nian's Raptor and the Refrigerated Truck.
There wasn't enough room for the Refrigerated Truck to turn around here, so it had been left behind.
Hao Ren had just finished rummaging through the supplies and jumped down from the cargo compartment. Spotting Su Nian, he casually tossed a bag over.
"That ox is good stuff. Don't kill it. Keep it and draw its blood," Hao Ren said with a smile.
"Let's get out of here first. There's a wraith behind us."
Hao Ren's expression turned serious.
Carrying the bag and leading the Big Black Bull, Su Nian ran toward the Raptor. Hao Ren followed, with a huge woven sack in front of him and a bulging hiking backpack on his back.
"Run along with the truck, understand?" Su Nian stroked the Big Black Bull's head.
The Big Black Bull mooed twice to show that it understood.
Once they were in the truck, Hao Ren spoke.
"Does this truck have some special mechanism? I can't start it, but you can."
The same thing had happened last time, but he hadn't had time to think about such trivial matters. Now that it had happened again, it couldn't be a coincidence.
"Fingerprint unlock. Never seen it before?"
Hao Ren looked closely. Sure enough, there was a faintly glowing fingerprint on the push-start button.
"Oh, no wonder."
Hao Ren understood. Su Nian must have modified it with his ability.
Glancing at the rearview mirror, Hao Ren's pupils contracted.
"The wraith you ran into is a Yellow Wraith! These things usually appear in deserted villages, old graveyards, and abandoned farmhouses. Since there's a Grave-Crying Specter here, there must be an enormous cemetery nearby, or what used to be a mass grave. It's only natural for a Yellow Wraith to appear."
He rummaged through his bag and took out a candle, just in case. These wraiths weren't particularly fond of animals such as roosters, pigs, softshell turtles, tigers, black oxen, and white horses.
Disliking them didn't mean fearing them.
After observing for a while, they would still approach.
"Don't waste it."
They were going to divide these supplies later. If they kept using them, what the hell would be left for him?
He still had debts to pay.
Su Nian activated the Wraith Travel Token. Irregular patches of dark red rust appeared along the edges of the license plate, and a blood-red arrow emerged on its surface, pointing toward a place name (→ Green Mountain Town). Hideous ghost faces occasionally appeared on the plate, as though evil spirits were trying to squeeze their way out. A ten-meter trail of Gray Fog streamed behind the truck.
"Whoa... That's badass. The whole area is filled with a wraith's aura. Did you make this with a Ghost Bus License Plate? Is it a Wraith Artifact?"
It felt similar to a Ghost Bus License Plate, only stronger.
Su Nian nodded.
"You bastard. I've been at this for a year and still haven't gotten a single Wraith Artifact. Can I ride in your truck from now on?" Hao Ren asked, his face full of flattery.
"Of course..." Su Nian paused. "Not."
"Why the hell would I cart a man around? Besides, you just said you haven't done all that well. That's even more reason not to take you."
"I meant I've had bad luck, not that I haven't done well." Hao Ren looked annoyed.
"Bad luck makes it even more out of the question."
"Hiss..." Hao Ren choked on his words, then suddenly remembered something. "What do you think of my body?"
"Are you fucking sick? I'm not into men."
He felt that Hao Ren was trying to trade his body for a ride. It was utterly disgusting. Wasn't this guy a Beijing big shot? Was his hometown actually Chengdu?
"I'm talking about muscle definition, body hair density, things like that."
He had to confirm whether Su Nian really had X-ray vision. He couldn't let anyone find out that he had no hair around his dick.
"Keep this up and I'll throw you out to feed the yellow weasel... Hmm..." Su Nian glanced at the rearview mirror.
The Yellow Wraith abruptly vanished. When it appeared again, it was already level with the side mirror, its golden eyes staring fixedly at the window. With the Gray Fog concealing everything, it couldn't see a thing.
[Ding! Escaped the Yellow Wraith's pursuit. Gained 500 Survival Points.]
The Yellow Wraith lunged at an old woman at the very back.
"Ah... Help!" The old woman fell, looking toward the Raptor with hope in her eyes, wishing the people inside would save her.
"Granny, would you say I look like a human or a god?"
Su Nian took the opportunity to move the illusory five-pointed star cursor over it.
[Yellow Wraith] [Wraith] [Killing rules: Anyone who has disturbed or harmed it, or looked directly into its eyes, will be marked.] [Disrespectful words, attempts to drive it away, or scolding will trigger an unrelenting pursuit to the death (no solution)...]
This wraith couldn't be killed. It could create illusions to bewitch people, and its Petitioning for a Title had to be dealt with. If you answered, it would slowly strip away your luck and sanity.
If you didn't answer, it would attack directly. Its strength was nothing a wraith like the Lamp-Skin Wraith could compare to.
What's more, they still hadn't escaped the Grave-Crying Specter's pursuit, even though the Wraith Travel Token had already screened them off.
Yet the system hadn't announced anything, which meant the danger hadn't passed. This Class A Wraith wasn't as simple as he had imagined.
