Power Progression
Maki advances through technique proficiency, improved attributes, training, and system-assisted synthesis. No formal shinobi-rank promotion is explicitly documented in the supplied chapters.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure System awakened | 1 | Receives three basic elemental techniques, a tiny chakra reserve, and one Kamui fragment. Retaliating against Jiro and his companions earns his first 30 pressure points. |
| Precise Fire Release casting | 2 | A Root operative notices casting speed, hand seals, and chakra concentration beyond a beginner’s standard, despite Maki’s very small reserves. |
| Enhanced stamina and recovery; improved combat fundamentals | 9 | Senju vitality fragments let him sustain taijutsu sparring for at least twice as long as Minato. Further synthesis improves Body Flicker, reactions, and kunai accuracy. |
| Perfect shuriken accuracy | 12 | System-assisted throwing knowledge produces ten bullseyes on stationary targets and ten on moving targets. |
| Substitution, Clone, and Transformation—beginner | 17 | Synthesizes all three Academy techniques. The system records beginner proficiency, although Junji Ito judges his demonstration above an ordinary beginner’s level. |
| Chakra Scalpel—beginner | 28 | Unlocks a dense, stable chakra blade during Tsunade’s hospital test and successfully completes a procedure using precise chakra control. |
| Earth Release repertoire confirmed | 29 | The system lists Headhunter Jutsu at beginner proficiency, 50/60, and Subterranean Voyage at proficient, 200/500. |
| Rasengan completed | 30 | Finishes the technique after intensive summer practice and demonstrates it at a waterfall. Its A-rank, hand-seal-free nature later earns recognition from the Sannin 41. |
| Multiple Shadow Clone Technique learned | 48 | Redeems the S-rank forbidden technique for 2,000 pressure points. After one day, he can steadily divide chakra into five streams for half a minute. |
| White Fang Swordsmanship—beginner | 64 | Pressuring Hatake Sakumo grants 50 fragments, which Maki combines to unlock the style. |
| Lightning Blade learned | 70 | Spends 400 pressure points immediately before fighting Uchiha Mikoto. |
| White Fang Swordsmanship mastered; Iaido acquired through exchange | 101 | Trades his mastered White Fang insights for Mifune’s Iaido to address weaknesses in close combat. |
| Chidori Stream confirmed in his repertoire | 108 | Orochimaru identifies it as a potential counter to Minato’s Flying Thunder God during the individual matches; its acquisition is not shown. |

Background / History
Maki awakens in the body of a Konoha orphan with memories of a previous life and knowledge of the original story. The body’s former owner had been timid around bullies and had known Yakushi Nonō for six years. Maki inherits those memories and treats helping Nonō as a responsibility toward someone who genuinely cared for his predecessor 1 5 6 52.
His initial chakra reserves are extremely small. During Root’s recruitment test, he deliberately releases only a fraction of that chakra, ensuring that the examiners dismiss him as unsuitable. He later helps Nonō avoid the same organization by coaching her to conceal her potential and persuading Director Yuki to secure an Academy recommendation instead 3 5.
At the Academy, Maki builds a friendship and rivalry with Minato Namikaze while secretly using their competition to improve through the Pressure System. He also funds Nonō’s medical education. The three eventually move into Minato’s inherited house, establishing a household organized around school, study, and training 4 6 9 10.
Tsunade accepts Nonō as her disciple but declines Maki, judging his innate aptitude mediocre despite his willpower and precise chakra control. Nawaki recommends him to Orochimaru, who becomes interested in Maki’s curiosity and Rasengan development. The apprenticeship is formally settled at a dinner in Hiruzen Sarutobi’s home 29 30 37.
Personality
Maki is sharp-tongued, calculating, and conscious of how others perceive him. He deliberately cultivates an abrasive but principled public persona: provoking people benefits his system, but appearing dangerously unstable would threaten his future. His claim that he wants to become Hokage and his extravagant praise of Hiruzen are political performances rather than straightforward expressions of ambition 4 14 16.
His irreverence conceals anxiety about the approaching war. He believes an orphan without inherited techniques or influential connections has little chance of protecting anyone, making personal strength an urgent necessity. Even so, his care is practical: he protects Nonō’s educational opportunities, comforts her when classmates reject her defense of him, and prepares escape routes before taking his teammates into danger 5 6 18 52.
Maki values understanding ninjutsu, not merely collecting powerful attacks. Orochimaru recognizes this genuine intellectual hunger, while Senju En praises his disciplined poison research. His curiosity coexists with restraint: he accepts warnings about shadow-clone fatigue and later seeks complementary sword styles to correct a specific combat weakness 10 30 45 101.
He also prefers survival to publicity. After the Uzushio battle, he asks to keep his contributions out of public reports so enemy intelligence networks will not single him out. His confidence nevertheless has limits: repeated success against vulnerable enemies leads to a disastrous encounter with Jinin Akebino, from which he survives only through Orochimaru’s intervention 60 63.
Abilities & Skills
Pressure System
The Pressure System rewards Maki for causing psychological pressure, granting points and fragments associated with a target’s abilities or attributes 1 4 6.
- Point expenditure: Converts accumulated pressure points into technique fragments or immediate learning, as demonstrated with the Academy techniques, Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, and Lightning Blade 17 48 70.
- Target-specific rewards: Minato supplies Body Flicker and Flying Thunder God-related fragments; Nawaki supplies vitality and chakra-capacity fragments; Tsunade supplies medical, strength, and chakra-control fragments 4 6 7 38.
- Indirect pressure: Comments and written praise can affect people who are not physically present, including Danzō 4 16.
- Unexpected targets: Animals and living ninja blades can also yield rewards 48 63.
- Sincere pressure: His honest compliment about Kushina’s hair triggers a reward because it unsettles her expectations 27.
- Fragment limits: Receiving fragments does not mean an ability is usable. Kamui initially requires 2,000 fragments, while Flying Thunder God remains incomplete in his recorded inventory 1 29.
Chakra Control and Physical Conditioning
Maki compensates for initially poor reserves and unexceptional innate talent through precise control, fragment-enhanced vitality, and disciplined practice 2 9 29.
- Forms a stable Chakra Scalpel shortly after unlocking it 28.
- Creates the Rasengan through chakra shape transformation without hand seals or an external medium 29 30.
- Recovers stamina far faster than other children his age 9.
- Can still suffer short-term chakra overload: his fingertips tremble after striking Nawaki with the Rasengan 41 44.
- Cannot consistently overcome vastly stronger opponents through control alone, as his fight with Akebino demonstrates 60.
Rasengan
Maki completes an A-rank rotating chakra sphere during summer training. Orochimaru credits him with largely developing it himself, and Tsunade later treats the achievement as evidence that he could build a legacy as an inventor 30 41 108.
- Combines it with Body Flicker for sudden close-range attacks 53.
- Uses Transformation and carefully timed evasion to create an opening against Nawaki 44.
- Inflicts a severe abdominal injury when Nawaki takes it directly 41.
- Employs Rasengan-wielding clones to exhaust Mikoto and threaten multiple angles 70.
- Uses it for selective battlefield ambushes rather than prolonged head-on exchanges 60.
Multiple Shadow Clone Technique
Orochimaru teaches Maki the technique’s principles before Maki completes it through system redemption. Dispersed clones return their experiences to the original, offering accelerated learning at the cost of returned fatigue 45 48.
- Creates decoys, scouts, distractions, and concealed attack opportunities 53 54.
- Exploits the smoke from destroyed clones to block an enemy’s vision 53.
- Uses repeated clone waves to drain an opponent while preserving his real body 70.
- Plans clone-assisted retreat routes for his reconnaissance team 52.
- Must manage chakra division and accumulated fatigue rather than multiplying clones recklessly 45.
Elemental and Academy Ninjutsu
| Technique / Field | Documented Use or Status |
|---|---|
| Body Flicker Technique | Rapid evasion, ambushes, and retreat; crosses fifteen paces in one step during the pirate-captain attack 39 52 53. |
| Hidden Mist Technique | Blocks Mikoto’s vision and conceals a coordinated attack against Sunagakure’s puppet force 70 104. |
| Lightning Blade | Learned through a 400-point purchase immediately before the Mikoto duel 70. |
| Chidori Stream | Identified by Orochimaru as a possible means of disrupting Minato’s teleportation 108. |
| Fire Release | Displays unusually precise early casting and later burns a battlefield corpse to remove a potential resurrection risk 2 59. |
| Headhunter Jutsu / Subterranean Voyage | Listed as learned Earth Release techniques in his system inventory 29. |
| Clone / Substitution / Transformation | Synthesized Academy techniques; Transformation is also used to bait Nawaki during combat 17 44. |
Swordsmanship and Weapon Handling
Maki develops swordsmanship to supplement a fighting style initially centered on mobility, clones, and Rasengan 64 101.
- Acquires White Fang Swordsmanship through fragments obtained from Sakumo, later mastering the style 64 101.
- Exchanges that knowledge for Mifune’s Iaido, combining lethal precision with calm, decisive simplicity 101.
- Selects the Sword of the Thunder God for its light weight and chakra-conducting properties 64.
- Achieves perfect stationary- and moving-target shuriken scores at the Academy 12.
- Uses an ordinary kunai—not his legendary sword—to finish the match against Mikoto after exhausting her 70.
Medical Knowledge and Toxicology
Maki studies alongside Nonō under Senju En, although his medical aptitude falls well below hers 9.
- Conducts poison research that En specifically praises 10.
- Reads Fundamentals of Toxicology during his independent study 10.
- Uses Chakra Scalpel and precise chakra control to complete a hospital procedure 28.
- Receives medical-talent and Mystical Palm fragments, but the recorded inventory still lists Mystical Palm as incomplete 5 6 29.
Tactical Command and Infiltration
Maki’s strongest battlefield decisions exploit enemy perception, terrain, and the complementary abilities of his allies 52 53 104.
- Contingency planning: Studies escape routes and retreat methods before entering Uzushio 52.
- Target selection: Hunts wounded or isolated enemies rather than seeking fair fights 60 63.
- Counter-espionage: Connects Taobo’s nervous reaction, strong chakra, and unusual shore visit to a disrupted intelligence handoff 54.
- Impersonation: Uses Hayato Satomi’s credentials and supporting background research to enter a Land of Iron military conference 76.
- Team coordination: Assigns specialized roles to Minato, Nawaki, Nonō, Tsunade, and Sakumo, then disables the puppet commander controlling the enemy force 104.
- Known weakness: Akebino recognizes the predictability of his ambush-centered approach and defeats him 60.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword of the Thunder God — Tobirama Senju’s sealed S-rank relic, borrowed after Maki secures recommendations and persuades Sakumo to release it. Its seals initially exceed his confidence in his sealing skills; it is operational during the later Mikoto duel 64 70 71.
- Samehada, Nuibari, and Kabutowari — Captured Mist blades entrusted to him for research, subject to later cataloguing and possible compensation arrangements. Provoking them yields chakra-devouring, wire-control, and defense-penetration fragments 63.
- Orochimaru’s ninjutsu scrolls — Handwritten instructions with chakra-circulation diagrams, including Snake Clone, Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, Shedding Technique, Soft Body Modification, elemental techniques, and Tobirama’s Multiple Shadow Clone manuscript. Possessing these scrolls does not establish mastery of every technique 45 48.
- Kunai and shuriken — Used for ranged distraction, close combat, and decisive finishing threats 12 39 70.
- Soldier Pills — Used during his unsuccessful fight against Akebino 60.
- “Hit hard” pencil — Taken by Kushina, who adopts its carved phrase as her personal motto 34.
- Training notebook — Records planned improvements to Rasengan and a proposed set of three genjutsu and two Water Release control techniques 105.
Relationships
- Minato Namikaze — Closest Academy friend, housemate, and persistent rival. Minato’s training repeatedly fuels Maki’s system rewards, while their friendship includes shared meals, sparring, and plans to combine Minato’s teleportation with Maki’s clones and tactics 4 9 10 33 66.
- Yakushi Nonō — Childhood friend of the original body and later housemate. Maki helps her avoid Root and pays for medical instruction; she supports him against rumors and frequently recognizes the concern beneath his abrasive behavior 5 6 10 18.
- Senju Nawaki — Friend, teammate, and senior fellow disciple under Orochimaru. Nawaki secures mentorship opportunities for Maki, while Maki is entrusted with protecting him on dangerous missions 25 30 37 49 50.
- Orochimaru — Master who values Maki’s curiosity and tactical aptitude. Supplies advanced scrolls, formalizes his apprenticeship, and saves him from Akebino through a snake clone 30 37 45 60.
- Tsunade — Initially declines him as a disciple but comes to trust his planning and battlefield judgment. Entrusts Nawaki’s safety and captured-blade research to him, and later praises his potential as a ninjutsu inventor 29 50 52 63 108.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Friend and reconnaissance teammate. His sincere praise and harsh anti-bullying advice help her become assertive; she subsequently competes with Minato for his attention. Hiruzen asks Maki to help her form lasting bonds 27 32 34 36 37 53.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Political patron impressed by Maki’s apparent loyalty and maturity. Supports his apprenticeship and sword request, and entrusts him with helping Kushina overcome isolation 16 36 37 64.
- Jiraiya — Supportive senior shinobi who embraces Maki’s proposed Sannin title, offers further instruction, and recommends him for the Sword of the Thunder God 63 64.
- Hatake Sakumo — Initially resists lending Tobirama’s sword. Later takes Maki’s warnings seriously and entrusts him with tactical command during the puppet operation 64 101 104.
- Mifune — Respected swordsman and exchange partner. Trades Iaido for Maki’s White Fang insights and values his restraint and commitment to protecting the weak 101.
- Senju En — Medical-theory and toxicology mentor who recognizes his diligence despite his self-deprecation 9 10.
- Uchiha Mikoto — Competitive but respectful opponent. Maki defeats her through mist, clones, and attrition, then warns her about the dangers of the Land of Rain front 70.
- Jiro Matsumoto — Former bully and rumor-spreading antagonist. Maki exposes his false claims, defeats him publicly, and demands an apology to Nonō 1 18 19.
- Shimura Danzō — Distrusted political figure whose exploitation of Nonō in the original story informs Maki’s efforts to keep her out of Root. Maki also earns rewards by indirectly provoking him 4 5 16.

- Prepares to improve Rasengan and supplement his repertoire with low-level control techniques; the listed genjutsu and Water Release choices are training plans, not confirmed acquisitions 105.
- Enters the individual matches as the adults’ leading favorite and swiftly forces Kuwano to surrender 108.
- Suspects the draw was arranged to preserve promising squads for the Sunagakure front. His second-round match against Nara Suisei begins, but its outcome is not provided 108.
