Commander Amaren always led from the front. As a woman capable of becoming a general in the Kingdom of Stromgarde-a nation with such a fierce and robust culture-and as the commander of the Stromgarde militia forces, Commander Amaren possessed Ninth Rank strength.
Although her female physique made her appear slender compared to the male rogues of the Syndicate, this formidable female warrior wearing the red general's armor of the Kingdom of Stromgarde moved like a Valkyrie, kicking up a storm of blood and slaughter amidst the Syndicate.
Just as Commander Amaren was about to shatter the morale of the Syndicate, a dagger suddenly materialized from the shadows, thrusting toward Commander Amaren's vital points.
Duke Falconcrest was likewise a Ninth Rank Grand Rogue. Being of the same Ninth Rank as Commander Amaren, Duke Falconcrest would by no means be a match for Commander Amaren in a direct confrontation.
Yet as a Grand Rogue, Duke Falconcrest deliberately sacrificed Syndicate members as a price to plunge Commander Amaren into the thick of combat, causing her to overlook the Duke Falconcrest hidden within the shadows before launching his surprise attack.
Faced with Duke Falconcrest's meticulously calculated ambush, Commander Amaren had possessed not an ounce of prior preparation, and evasion was already too late. Thus, this Valkyrie of the Kingdom of Stromgarde fiercely and pugnaciously abandoned all defense, savagely hacking the longsword in her hand toward Duke Falconcrest's head.
Duke Falconcrest's attack was undoubtedly much faster; his dagger would certainly kill Commander Amaren first. However, even if Commander Amaren suffered a fatal blow, the remaining momentum of her strike would still decapitate Duke Falconcrest in one fell swoop.
Duke Falconcrest, who was of aristocratic birth, naturally treasured his own life. He had not expected this female from the Kingdom of Stromgarde to be so ferocious as to desire mutual destruction, so he altered his attack. While dodging Commander Amaren's longsword, his dagger inflicted grievous injuries upon Commander Amaren.
Failing to kill Commander Amaren in a single strike allowed Commander Amaren to be protected by her personal guard. Yet lacking Commander Amaren-their Ninth Rank Goddess of War-the remaining Stromgarde militia forces were utterly incapable of withstanding even a single blow from the Ninth Rank Grand Rogue, Duke Falconcrest.
Led by the Ninth Rank powerhouse Duke Falconcrest, a morale-boosted Syndicate began to counterattack the Stromgarde militia forces, gradually pushing the Stromgarde militia back toward the city wall. It would not take long for the Syndicate to seize the Stromgarde city gate, then open the great gates to allow the allied forces of the Syndicate and the Stonesplinter Ogres outside the city to charge into Stromgarde.
At that very moment, a rugged human fellow wielding a huge warhammer appeared, swinging his hammer straight at Duke Falconcrest.
Duke Falconcrest did not pay much attention to the rugged human fellow before him, whose attire was identical to that of the other refugees participating in the work relief, assuming the opponent was merely a strong ordinary person. Yet when the opponent launched his attack, Duke Falconcrest realized he had underestimated him.
Warhammers inherently possessed immense weight, and the speed with which this rugged human fellow swung his massive warhammer was not a whit inferior to someone using an ordinary longsword. Moreover, holy light energy rippled atop the warhammer.
With a muffled bang, a careless Duke Falconcrest could only raise his dagger to block in front of his chest, but the enormous gap in strength sent Duke Falconcrest flying from the opponent's single hammer blow.
Cough, cough, cough... "A Ninth Rank Paladin, who are you?" Duke Falconcrest spewed a mouthful of blood. That previous strike had allowed Duke Falconcrest to analyze the opponent's strength: identical to himself and Commander Amaren, he was a Ninth Rank powerhouse, and a rare Paladin at that.
The rugged human fellow first gathered the Holy Light, using Flash of Light to heal the continuously bleeding wounds on Commander Amaren's body before replying to Duke Falconcrest: "Rex Doom."
"You... you are the son of the Silver Hand Highlord Gavinrad Doom!" The Syndicate's intelligence network was no worse than the Kingdom of Stormwind's SI:7, and intelligence concerning Lordaeron was naturally known to Duke Falconcrest.
The rugged human fellow before his eyes was precisely the son of the Silver Hand Paladin Highlord Gavinrad Doom, who had already fallen in battle beneath the sword of the Fallen Prince Arthas Menethil.
Yet no one would have imagined that the son of the dignified Silver Hand Paladin Highlord Gavinrad Doom-himself a Ninth Rank Paladin, Rex Doom-had actually joined the Kingdom of Stromgarde under the guise of a refugee, and was even serving as a laborer within Stromgarde under the work relief program.
Rex Doom had also participated in that previous battle. After the Silver Hand was defeated and its two Highlords, Uther the Lightbringer and Gavinrad Doom, fell in battle, Rex Doom had managed to survive by a fluke. Yet burdened by the destruction of his homeland, the loss of his family, and the blow of his father's death, Rex Doom had concealed his identity and become one of the refugees of the Kingdom of Lordaeron.
Upon learning that the Kingdom of Stromgarde had defeated a detachment of the Scourge and seeing the decree promulgated by Galin Trollbane, Rex Doom had traveled with the Lordaeron refugees to the Arathi Highlands to seek asylum from the Kingdom of Stromgarde.
Only, Rex Doom had never revealed his identity. Upon seeing the city of Stromgarde attacked, Rex Doom had stepped forward. He could not allow the allied forces of the Syndicate and the Stonesplinter Ogres to capture Stromgarde; if that happened, the Lordaeron refugees who had so difficulty won sanctuary would once again encounter danger.
As a Paladin, he could not allow the Lordaeron refugees-already bereft of country and home, wandering in displacement-to lose everything once more.
"This is the new homeland of the future Lordaeron refugees. I will never allow you outcasts to capture this place. I, Rex Doom, swear to defend Stromgarde to the death!" The previously disheartened Rex Doom regained his fighting spirit once more, and dazzling holy light energy erupted from within his body.
Gazing at the erupting Rex Doom, even in his prime he would not be the opponent's match, let alone now that he had been wounded by a single blow. Duke Falconcrest cursed angrily, "Damn you, Rex Doom, the Syndicate will never let you go!"
Having hurled down this harsh threat, Duke Falconcrest once again vanished into the shadows, not daring to do battle with Rex Doom.
Seeing their boss, Duke Falconcrest, flee, the Syndicate quickly routed in the face of the powerful Ninth Rank Paladin, Rex Doom.
"Thank you for extending a helping hand, Rex Doom." Commander Amaren's complexion was incomparably pale, yet she still forced herself to thank Rex Doom for stepping in at the most critical juncture. Had it not been for the appearance of Rex Doom, the city of Stromgarde would very likely have fallen.
"No need to thank me, Commander Amaren. It is I who should thank Prince Galin Trollbane; it is his benevolence that has given the refugees of Lordaeron, whose country has fallen and whose homes are destroyed, a new home."
Rex Doom subsequently used the Holy Light to heal Commander Amaren once more, and then directly took the place of the heavily injured Commander Amaren to command the Stromgarde militia forces in resisting the rabble of the Syndicate and Stonesplinter Ogre allied forces.
