Heavy casualties on the very first day

That slow, easily telegraphed attack posed no threat to Steve.

Steve dodged it with ease.

But the enemy's assault was not over. More streams of fire shot toward him.

Just as the wave of flames was about to swallow him, Steve pulled the shield off his back, leaped into the air, and hurled it!

Steve had no intention of delivering a killing blow. He only wanted to find out who was behind the attacks, not kill them.

But the shield apparently had other ideas. The moment he threw it, it unleashed tremendous power.

Clang-

It slammed hard into the human launching the fire attacks.

Pyro, John, was dead!

As John lay dying, he seemed to sense his impending death.

He unleashed the last of his strength, sending out an enormous red shock wave!

Captain America immediately curled up, hiding his entire body behind the Vibranium Shield.

The Vibranium Shield could absorb energy and easily blocked the incoming attack, but Captain America felt no relief at all.

He was used to life-or-death crises and had witnessed countless deaths and painful farewells.

Even he himself had been separated from his beloved because of a war.

Yet now, he felt none of the relief of having survived.

I clearly hadn't intended to kill him. Why did he still end up dead?

How had the shield unleashed such tremendous offensive power at the last moment?

And then it had even bounced back. How strange!

At the last moment, Steve had noticed that the person releasing the flames was still a young man, though no longer a child.

He was not very old, either.

Steve gazed at the forest, now a sea of flames, with a heavy heart. His face darkened.

*Was this how this world had changed? Serving people up for me to kill
