The amusement park's director and its other investors had never imagined things would turn out this way.
Not only had they suffered devastating losses, but their reputations were now in ruins.

The director's assets had shrunk drastically. Not only had he failed to recoup even a fraction of his investment, but he was also drowning in debt, living each miserable day hiding from his creditors.
