Background / History

Flender had traveled alongside Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong before the events at Shrek Academy. He regarded Yu Xiaogang as a sworn brother, although their past rivalry over Liu Erlong remained a sore point. Yang Jian outperforming Yu’s student therefore gave him considerable personal satisfaction 2 16 25.

Flender initially viewed Yang Jian as one of the few children in the academy’s impoverished village who possessed soul power. Despite Yang’s innate soul power being only level 0.5, Flender kept him nearby because of his unusual external martial soul and Flender’s need for land in the village 14.

Having watched Yang grow up, Flender knew both his talent and his stubbornness. He would have accepted him as a personal disciple, as he had Ma Hongjun, if not for that temperament. Yang largely taught himself cultivation theory; the academy’s main practical contribution was helping him hunt dragon-blooded soul beasts to feed Xiaotian 5.

Personality

Flender is proud of his students and competitive with Yu Xiaogang. He deliberately gives Tang San’s talent only faint praise before revealing that Yang Jian reached level thirty-six at twelve. His pleasure comes partly from defending Shrek’s reputation and partly from finally gaining an advantage over his old rival 2 3.

His concern for Yang can make him susceptible to authoritative claims. Troubled by Yang’s slowed cultivation and Xiaotian’s apparent lack of development, he accepts much of Yu Xiaogang’s explanation and urges Yang to apologize and follow his guidance. Nevertheless, he later condemns Yu for provoking Yang into a potentially fatal soul-ring wager 5 6 17.

Flender combines protective leadership with uneven discipline. He ends discussion of Tang San’s attack on Ning Rongrong without imposing a punishment, drawing criticism from the students. Against outside threats, however, he refuses to surrender Yang to the Peerless Dragon Snake. His protectiveness also has a ruthless side: he kills Meng Yiran to prevent an enemy from becoming a future danger 7 25 29.

Abilities & Skills

Four-Eyed Cat Owl Martial Soul

  • Allows Flender to assume a Four-Eyed Cat Owl form and fight from the air 11.
  • Suits an agility-attack fighting style focused on surprise attacks 11.
  • His destructive power and armor-piercing capability are comparatively limited, contributing to his difficulty damaging the Three-Headed Flood Dragon Wolf King 11.

Martial Soul Avatar

  • Flender uses his Seventh Soul Skill, Martial Soul Avatar, during the Wolf King battle 14 26.
  • The exertion leaves him weakened afterward. He has not fully recovered when the confrontation with Meng Shu begins and cannot immediately use the Avatar again 14 26.

Soul Power Pressure

  • Can suppress lower-ranked soul masters and selectively reduce the pressure placed on individual students 18.
  • Stops an impending fight around the meditating Yang Jian by immobilizing the disputing students 18.
  • Tests Yang with increasing pressure, eventually reaching level seventy-one; Yang withstands it without summoning his martial soul 18.

Combat Experience and Assessment

  • Fights alongside Zhao Wuji against both the Wolf King and the weakened Dragon Duke Meng Shu 11 26.
  • Questions Yu Xiaogang’s initial thirty-thousand-year estimate of the Wolf King after examining its soul bone and recalling its resistance to two high-level Soul Saints 14.
  • Identifies the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent as a suitable soul-ring source for Oscar 23.

Equipment / Items

  • Unnamed soul tool — Stores supplies, including pieces of dragon meat that Flender offers Xiaotian after the Wolf King battle 14.

Relationships

  • Yang Jian — Student and the successor in whom Flender places his highest hopes. Flender worries over his cultivation, defends him against outside demands, and increasingly trusts his judgment in battle. Yang nevertheless regularly challenges and mocks him 5 16 23 25.
  • Ma Hongjun — Personal disciple. Flender takes pride in his talent and announces his advancement to rank twenty-nine before the forest expedition 3 4.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Longstanding friend, former sworn brother, and rival. Flender initially protects his dignity and trusts his reputation, but becomes angry over his treatment of Yang and later declines to answer him after Meng Shu’s death 2 5 14 17 28.
  • Liu Erlong — A figure in Flender’s past rivalry with Yu Xiaogang. He wishes she could witness his student surpassing Yu’s 2.
  • Zhao Wuji — Shrek Academy’s vice dean and Flender’s combat partner. They regularly spar and stand together when the academy’s students are threatened 10 24 25 26.
  • Oscar — Student whom Flender pursues when he runs into the forest after losing the wager against Yang. Flender later helps assess a soul beast for his third ring 9 23.
  • Meng Yiran — Enemy whom Flender kills as a precaution against future retaliation 29.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yang Jian’s Breakthrough and Cultivation Dispute

When Yang enters cultivation after his sudden increase in soul power, Flender checks his condition and reassures the students that he has reached the threshold of level forty. He then organizes a Star Dou Great Forest expedition for soul-ring hunting and practical experience 2 3 4.

During the expedition, Yu Xiaogang’s warnings revive Flender’s concerns about Yang’s slow progress over the preceding three years. Flender asks Yu to help and presses Yang to accept his instruction, despite Yang’s insistence that he is preparing for an explosive breakthrough 5 6.

After Tang San throws five silver needles at Ning Rongrong, Flender and Zhao Wuji cannot intervene in time; Yang catches them instead. Flender interrupts Zhao’s reprimand, orders everyone to drop the matter, and warns that there must be no repeat 6 7.

Three-Headed Flood Dragon Wolf King

Flender returns with Oscar to find Zhao Wuji badly outmatched by the Wolf King. He joins the battle, but the two Soul Saints still struggle to contain it. When Zhao is thrown to the ground, Flender urgently tells Yang to lead the students away 10 11.

He subsequently follows Yang’s battle instructions, helping attack while Tsukuyomi restrains the beast. After its death, Flender examines the skull soul bone and questions Yu’s original estimate of the creature’s age 12 13 14.

Flender strongly objects to Yang attempting to absorb the ring and asks him to explain his confidence. Once absorption begins, he angrily confronts Yu for encouraging the dangerous wager. He later stops the students from fighting near Yang, warning that their confrontation could endanger him 15 16 17 18.

Yang’s successful absorption turns Flender’s alarm into delight. His attempt to test Yang’s resilience ends when Xiaotian’s Sacred Dragon Tail Sweep knocks him away. After returning, Flender confirms that Yang has reached level forty-eight 18 19 20.

Oscar’s Soul Ring and the Peerless Dragon Snake

While helping Oscar obtain his third ring, Flender cautions Yang that his extraordinary achievements are inflating the others’ expectations. He urges restraint, contrasting with his earlier motto that only mediocrities do not dare stir up trouble 23.

The arrival of the Peerless Dragon Snake forces Flender into cautious diplomacy. When Meng Shu demands that Yang be handed over, Flender refuses, reveals his seven soul rings, and stands ready to fight beside Zhao Wuji 24 25.

After Yang suppresses Meng Shu’s power, Flender and Zhao attack together. Their incomplete recovery limits them, and Meng Shu’s Eighth Soul Skill forces both onto the defensive before Yang pursues and kills him 26 27.

Flender later reveals that he has killed Meng Yiran, arguing that a spared enemy might gain strength or recruit stronger allies. He also questions whether Yang’s seemingly indestructible tower is a high-grade soul tool made by a divine smith, but Yang interrupts his speculation 29.
