Personality
Yan is blunt, expressive, and proud of his talent. Before meeting Lin Hao, he regards himself, Hu Liena, and Xie Yue as Spirit Hall’s most outstanding young geniuses. Lin Hao’s innate full soul power challenges that assumption, and his later breakthroughs provoke outspoken disbelief from Yan 11 35 36.
His skepticism does not prevent him from helping others. He accompanies Hu Liena and Xie Yue when they intend to protect Lin Hao at the junior academy, and later worries about Lin Hao’s unexplained absence of more than half a year 14 35.
Yan’s affection for Hu Liena is persistent and unrequited. He privately thinks of Xie Yue as his future brother-in-law, praises Hu Liena above the Skywater girls, and becomes deeply hurt by her attraction to Lin Hao. Nevertheless, jealousy alone is not enough to make him attack his friend: after an illusion on Hell Road drives him to violence, he feels ashamed and apologizes 11 111 129 132.

Meeting and Training with Lin Hao
Yan first encounters Lin Hao alongside Hu Liena and Xie Yue near Spirit Hall’s central hill. He questions whether Lin Hao is Elder Ju’s new disciple and is surprised that another exceptional talent has appeared among Spirit Hall’s younger generation 10 11.
When Lin Hao enters Power Attack Class A despite following the Food System path, Yan accompanies his companions to help him. They arrive to find that Lin Hao has already defeated the classroom’s boys without their assistance 14.
The trio later requests daily Spirit-Gathering Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemums to improve their physiques and cultivation speed. In exchange, they spar with Lin Hao each week. Yan’s strength-focused style provides the direct, physical clashes Lin Hao prefers, but Lin Hao’s superior agility eventually lets him kick Yan out of the fighting area 18 19.
After Lin Hao returns from a lengthy absence, Yan is incredulous at his level-39 cultivation and ten-thousand-year third ring. Over the following months, Lin Hao becomes strong enough to defeat all three companions even when they use their soul skills 35 36.
Continental Academy Tournament
Yan accompanies Hu Liena and Xie Yue to confront Lin Hao about leaving Spirit City and joining the Great Enshrined. After hearing Lin Hao and Chrysanthemum Douluo explain their break with Bibi Dong, the trio leaves to investigate the account 103 104 105.
As a Soul King, Yan helps Spirit Hall win the individual king-of-the-ring stage. In the subsequent battle against Skywater, he fights with Flame Lord possession, but his flame and magma attacks fail against Lin Hao’s Thunder God Armor. Lin Hao then punches him out of the arena, leaving him unable to get up 111 113 115.
Slaughter City and Hell Road
Yan enters Slaughter City with Hu Liena and Xie Yue, where they unexpectedly reunite with Lin Hao. They participate in the Hell Slaughter Arena’s one-on-one death matches, while Lin Hao’s victories intensify Hu Liena’s affection and Yan’s jealousy 129.
After more than half a year of bloody combat, Yan and Xie Yue reach one hundred consecutive victories before Hu Liena completes her own streak. During the group’s Hell Road expedition, Lin Hao assigns Yan to guard the rear 130 131.
Yan joins the fight against the Ten Headed Fierce Yang Serpent, but later succumbs to illusions that magnify his resentment toward Lin Hao. After waking, he apologizes and explains that he was under an illusion. Lin Hao accepts the apology, and Yan departs with Hu Liena and Xie Yue to return to Spirit City 132.
