It was a church school with a long history, situated on high ground in the northeastern part of the city. Its European-style buildings had red brick walls, white windows, and pointed bell towers covered in ivy. Many cherry trees grew on campus. Though they were not in bloom, their thick trunks and lush branches cast dense patches of green shade in the sunlight.

The grass on the athletic field was neatly trimmed, and the white goalposts stood out in the sunshine. In the distance, the chapel's spire rose high, its cross looking especially sacred against the blue sky and white clouds.

Satoru Gojo kicked a pebble along the ground. It rolled away, struck a flower bed beside the path, bounced once, and stopped. He held his phone to his ear, with Masamichi Yaga's voice coming from the other end.

"Wouldn't it be better if we went back to Jujutsu High now?" Satoru Gojo sounded subdued, as though he was unhappy.

There was a second of silence on the other end before Yaga answered.

"Though I agree that would be the right thing to do, we have no choice, Satoru. These are Master Tengen's orders-do your best to meet that girl's wishes over these two days."

Satoru Gojo clicked his tongue, hung up, and stuffed the phone into his pocket. He turned to Suguru Geto and Wana, looking displeased.

"This is just letting our guard down completely."

Suguru Geto stood beside him with both hands in his pockets, watching the uniformed girls moving through the distant school building in twos and threes. Their laughter drifted over, clear and warm, like wind chimes stirred by a breeze.

"Don't say that, Satoru." Suguru Geto spoke softly but earnestly. "Even if she doesn't care, we all know that once she merges
