The halo around his left-hand self was cold and harsh, showing the six months he had spent as an orphan who had awakened his Sequence within the Safe Zone. Outside the Safe Zone, he had narrowly escaped death time and again; within the Safe Zone, it had been no different. He had either been fighting Gods or fighting people. He had always needed to watch for approaching danger.
He withdrew his gaze and turned to his other self on the right. Unlike the one on the left, the right-hand halo was a warm, gentle shade of dark gold. Its images were nothing like those grueling days, reflecting instead the happy, fulfilling life he had lived in an ordinary world.
