The Third Hokage stared coldly at Danzo, his teeth clenched.
Of course, that old dog Hiruzen was hardly noble enough to demand justice for Konoha from Danzo. He was simply furious that Danzo had deceived him. When Danzo first established Root, he had assured him that its members would also be loyal to him as Hokage!
Yet after all this, Root turned out to be nothing more than Danzo's private army, with no connection whatsoever to Hiruzen Sarutobi. Danzo had kept him in the dark like a complete fool, while he had approved vast amounts of funding for Root in his capacity as Hokage over the years.

Danzo did not answer. He merely turned his head away, unwilling to waste his breath explaining.
But his contemptuous gaze said it all. He had been playing Hiruzen Sarutobi for a fool. Everything he had done was intended to replace Hiruzen Sarutobi and claim the Hokage position he had always dreamed of.
After all, he had even dared to send assassins after Hiruzen Sarutobi himself. How could he possibly be honest with him?
