Background
Nangong Zheyue belongs to the Spirit Clan’s sacred chiefly bloodline. Only members of that lineage can communicate with the divine will within the Moon Crater, giving the chief an authority rooted in generations of religious tradition. Although young and chief for only a few years, she can overrule even the clan’s most senior elders 198.
She has no children, making her survival essential to the continuation of the chief’s bloodline. Wuxue and Wushu fear that invoking the Moon Goddess’s power could destroy her and leave the Spirit Clan without its ancestral protection 174 198.
Her deeper identity remains unresolved. After the battle with Yi He, she privately questions whether Lu Mian is someone she remembers, but acknowledges that too many of her memories are missing. The Moon Goddess statues she later erects bear a resemblance to her 206 207.
Appearance
- Human appearance: A tall, beautiful woman dressed in white, with a graceful, ethereal presence that seems both real and illusory 170 180 192.
- Divine manifestation: When drawing on the Moon Crater’s divinity, her face shines silver, her pupils disappear, and her eyes become entirely silver 203.
- Transformed appearance: Sheds her human exterior to become a skeletal, many-clawed creature with an oval skull, internal bone spikes, and a spine capable of extending into a spiraling silver tailbone 205.
- Return to human form: Shrinks back into human shape amid silver light after Yi He’s defeat 206.
Personality
Nangong is composed to the point of seeming inhuman. Her expression rarely changes, and Lu Mian finds that her speech lacks ordinary emotional inflection rather than merely sounding indifferent. Nevertheless, she can smile, express surprise, and show concern when circumstances break through her usual reserve 174 180 192 195 196.
She is direct in negotiations but highly secretive about strategy. She explains why she needs Jin Xiao killed and pays Lu Mian in advance, yet refuses to explain the deeper reason she sought him out. Her elders repeatedly mistake her silence and concealed preparations for weakness 171 173 180 198.
Protecting the Spirit Clan takes precedence over its allies. She rejects a proposed marriage to Ye Shi, then uses the Heavenly Hound Tribe’s war with the Golden Lions to buy time without delivering the military aid she promised. Toward her own elders, she can be gracious: she accepts Wushu’s apology without resentment, acknowledging that both acted for the clan’s sake 174 191 198.
Abilities & Skills
Dreamscapes and Dream Observation
Nangong creates a Dreamscape resembling a moonlit wilderness beneath two moons, allowing her to meet and coordinate with Lu Mian remotely 180.
- Gives Lu Mian a jade bead that contacts her when crushed 180.
- Can see Wuxue’s dreams, through which she learns of the elder’s defection and search for the Moon Crater 180.
- Puts Wushu and the other surviving elders into a deep sleep after Yi He’s death 206.
- Lu Mian concludes that she has altered eyewitness memories to support the story that he is the Moon Goddess’s envoy 206.
- Explicitly denies foreseeing the future, explaining that her confidence in Lu Mian comes from trusting his abilities 180.
Moonlight Escape Technique
Nangong uses moonlight to travel rapidly across great distances 192.
- Reaches Lu Mian’s cave before dawn after leaving the Spirit Clan that night; his own earlier journey from the Golden Lion Tribe took two or three days on his ghost horse 192.
- Emerges from a broad wash of moonlight at her destination 192.
- Can also keep pace with Lu Mian’s fourth-realm movement speed during daylight 192.
Lunar Spellcasting and Illusions
Her combat techniques include illusory silver threads, lunar techniques, and deceptive duplicates 202 203.
- Silver threads: Slice toward enemies and attempt to entangle or extinguish incoming attacks 202.
- Moon-Soul Spirit Gauze: Produces freezing effects and an illusion of a second Nangong; also serves as a defensive barrier 203 204.
- Thousand Radiances Shatter the Moon: Cast in response to the Golden Lion King’s area-covering sonic attack 203.
- Moon Crater advantage: The sacred grounds strengthen the Spirit Clan’s spellcasting, helping its elders resist stronger Golden Lion opponents 202.
- Limits: The Golden Lion King sees through her duplicate, and Yi He’s black projectile pierces the Moon-Soul Spirit Gauze 203 204.
Moon Goddess Connection and Divine Aura
Her bloodline enables communication with the Moon Goddess’s dormant consciousness within the Moon Crater 198.
- Plans an awakening ritual lasting a full day and night, with invading Golden Lion warriors designated as offerings 198.
- Warns that interruption would invalidate the ritual 198.
- Releases the crater’s remaining aura of divinity when Lu Mian disrupts the Golden Lion King’s will, interfering with the king’s magic 204.
- Uses her remaining strength to kill the Golden Lion elders, then collapses from exhaustion 204.
- Invoking the goddess’s power is considered potentially fatal to her by the clan’s elders 174 198.
Monstrous Transformation
Nangong reveals a powerful nonhuman form while fighting Yi He 205.
- Pins and tears apart a giant black snake formed from Yi He’s serpent swords 205.
- Uses clawed forelimbs, biting attacks, and bone spikes in close combat 205.
- Extends her spine into a spiraling tailbone that pierces Yi He’s forehead when his faith falters 205.
- Continues attacking despite multiple broken bones and severe injuries 205.
- The watching Spirit Clan elders speculate that she has borrowed the Moon Goddess’s power; the transformation’s exact nature is not explained 205.
Heavenly-Language Knowledge
- Translates the three syllables “Zhipu Lie” as “false” when Lu Mian asks about the message he heard while connecting with the sun 196.
- Does not ask how he learned the phrase, leaving the extent of her knowledge unexplained 196.
Power Level and Limitations
- Her cultivation realm is not confirmed. Observers speculate that she is at the fourth realm, Life Mansion, largely because of her youth 173.
- She admits that her strength alone is insufficient to defeat the Golden Lion King 180.
- Her agility lets her evade individual blade attacks, but cannot avoid his densely overlapping sonic assault 203.
- Both fifth-realm victories—against the Golden Lion King and Yi He—require cooperation with Lu Mian 204 205 206.
Items
- Origin Seed — Pays it to Lu Mian before he undertakes Jin Xiao’s assassination; his system confirms that it is genuine 171.
- Blue-green jade bead — Gives it to Lu Mian as a means of contacting her through the Dreamscape 180.
Relationships
- Lu Mian — Hired assassin who becomes a trusted combat ally against the Golden Lion Tribe and Void Cult. She conceals his involvement behind the “Moon Goddess Envoy” account and promises to seek information about origin seeds for him 171 204 206.
- Moon Goddess — The Spirit Clan’s guardian deity, whose dormant will Nangong’s bloodline can contact. Nangong rejects Yi He’s attempt to replace that allegiance with worship of the Great Void Snake Mother 198 204.
- Wushu — Senior elder who initially advocates a marriage alliance and questions her decisions. He later apologizes, guards her at the Moon Crater, and kills Wuxue after her betrayal is exposed 173 174 198 202.
- Wuxue — Elder and envoy whose outward concern conceals betrayal. Nangong discovers her defection through her dreams and anticipates her warning to the Golden Lion King 174 180 199 202.
- Ye Shi — Heavenly Hound chief whose marriage proposal Nangong refuses. She subsequently promises him military support but withholds it while his tribe is destroyed 174 191 196.
- Jin Xiao — Golden Lion young chief whom she commissions Lu Mian to assassinate to destabilize his tribe 171 180.
- Golden Lion King — Enemy seeking to conquer the Spirit Clan and seize its hidden divinity stillbirth. Nangong and Lu Mian defeat him together in the Moon Crater 198 204.
- Yi He — Void Cult Incense Master who manipulates the Golden Lion invasion to obtain a vessel for the Great Void Snake Mother. Nangong rejects his offer of future godhood and helps Lu Mian kill him 204 205 206.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting Lu Mian
Nangong approaches Lu Mian after witnessing his fight with the Stone God. She asks him to kill Jin Xiao because the Golden Lion Tribe is trying to absorb the Spirit Clan despite their existing alliance. Acting through an outsider avoids the recognizable traces of the Spirit Clan’s curse-based methods 170 171.
After paying an Origin Seed upfront and passing Lu Mian’s test for hostile intentions, she accompanies him to Giant Lion City. She then returns to her clan to establish an alibi 171.
Diverting the Golden Lion Tribe
Within the Spirit Clan, Nangong refuses Wushu’s proposal that she marry Ye Shi for protection. After Jin Xiao’s assassination, she and Lu Mian coordinate a plan to implicate the Heavenly Hound Tribe, diverting Golden Lion aggression and giving Lu Mian time to grow stronger 174 180.
She tells her elders that the Heavenly Hounds killed Jin Xiao, allowing Wuxue to relay the claim to the Golden Lions. Later, she promises Ye Shi that the Spirit Clan will strike when the Golden Lions assault his ancestral grounds, but never intends to fight there 182 191.
Supporting the Ink God Battle
Nangong answers Lu Mian’s request for backup against the Jade Ink Tribe, arriving at his cave through moonlight. She stands by while he tests his newly attained fourth-realm strength against the Ink God Tree, preparing to intervene before he reveals another reserve of power 191 192 195.
After his victory, she judges him strong enough to face the Golden Lion King. Their subsequent discussion includes her translation of “Zhipu Lie” and Lu Mian’s ambition to surpass the gods 195 196.
The Moon Crater Trap
Following the Heavenly Hound Tribe’s destruction, Nangong reveals that she deliberately waited for the Golden Lions to attack. She opens the sacred grounds and prepares to awaken the Moon Goddess’s consciousness using the invaders as offerings 198 199.
Wuxue warns the Golden Lion King, prompting him to rush ahead with his elders. Nangong has anticipated the betrayal: Wuxue is killed, the Spirit Clan’s fourth-realm defenders gather in the crater, and the attackers enter prepared ground 199 202.
Nangong’s spells cannot overcome the king’s fifth-realm power alone. With Lu Mian’s intervention, she releases the remaining divine aura, enabling his finishing assault before killing the opposing elders herself 203 204.
Yi He and the Moon Goddess Envoy
The exhausted allies are ambushed by Yi He, who reveals his plan to use the Spirit Clan’s divinity stillbirth as the Great Void Snake Mother’s vessel. Nangong transforms, fights beside Lu Mian, and pierces Yi He’s forehead during an opening created by No Truth. Lu Mian then crushes his head 204 205 206.
Afterward, Nangong puts the witnesses to sleep and establishes a revised account in which Lu Mian descended as the Moon Goddess’s envoy. When he leaves, she announces that he has returned to the goddess, preserving a cover for any future appearances 206.
Consolidating the West Mang Domain
Nangong directs the Spirit Clan to seize the Golden Lion Tribe’s ancestral lands. After the remaining Golden Lions are annihilated, she stabilizes Spirit Clan control over the West Mang Domain by erecting Moon Goddess statues and requiring daily worship and offerings 206 207.
