Background / History
Hai Bodong earned the title Ice Emperor as one of the Jia Ma Empire’s previous generation of leading experts. He fought Yun Shan atop Misty Cloud Mountain and once faced two opposing Dou Emperors alone at a gathering involving the Jia Ma and Chu Yun empires. His defeat in the Misty Cloud Mountain battle left his relationship with Yun Shan strained 47 75.
Queen Medusa later sealed his cultivation, reducing him to Dou Ling. After more than a decade without his former strength, he lived in seclusion as an obscure mapmaker, hiding from enemies while gathering information about possible Heavenly Flame locations in the Tagor Desert 47 50 73 74.
Appearance
- Before restoration: A white-haired old man in blue robes, usually seen engraving maps behind his shop counter 47.
- After restoration: A handsome, white-haired, middle-aged man whose changed appearance initially prevents Qing Lin from recognizing him 74.
- Combat features: Ice-blue Dou Qi and long ice-crystal wings; his restored power produces snowfall around the shop despite its desert surroundings 74.
Personality
Hai Bodong is proud, suspicious, and blunt. He initially refuses to sell his map fragment, responds aggressively when Han Chen mentions a Poison-Breaking Pill, and tests the newcomers rather than immediately trusting them. Han Chen’s confidence in his integrity nevertheless earns his approval, prompting him to promise the fragment regardless of the spar’s outcome 47 48.
His gruff manner conceals considerable affection for Qing Lin. He treats her as his granddaughter, comforts her when frightened, and promises to defend her even against her own master if necessary. Although he presents his cooperation as a paid exchange, he ultimately risks his life rather than abandon her or let her surrender her freedom to save him 50 72 73.
Past regret strengthens his determination to keep his promises. Once restored, he is eager to reclaim his place in the empire, but Qing Lin’s safety takes priority over pride: he retreats when fighting two Dou Emperors would expose her to danger 73 74 75.
