The instant Kushina Uzumaki regained awareness and saw the "model answers" in her mind, she froze. Then overwhelming delight and an unmistakable look of I'm saved! burst across her face. Without the slightest hesitation, she bent over her desk, her pen dancing like a wound-up mechanism as she frantically overwrote and corrected the hopeless jumble of answers on her exam paper. Even her handwriting carried a triumphant, exhilarating energy.
Minato Namikaze and Shikaku Nara reacted more calmly and strategically to the perfect reference answers that had suddenly "fallen from the sky." In a fraction of a second, their eyes met in a swift, meaningful exchange, and they reached a complete understanding without a word.
Neither chose to copy Shinji's answers mindlessly. Instead, both treated them as the most authoritative reference and standard for corrections, immediately activating and refining the "intelligence networks" they had only just established. Through existing and newly developed channels, they began passing more accurate, more concise solutions-some even improved in certain details through their own understanding-to members of their respective groups who needed more help or had yet to fully grasp the material, such as Choza Akimichi and Inoichi Yamanaka. They made their final refinements, checks, and reinforcements. In the closing moments of the exam, a more efficient, more layered system of cooperation quietly unfolded, taking this "cheating war" to a new level.
Time slipped away, second by second, amid this fierce contest, silent on the surface but turbulent underneath.
When Umino Kakumatsu's steady, commanding voice rang through the classroom like a final verdict-"Time's up! Pens down, everyone!"-a chorus of long sighs rose almost in unison, mingling utter exhaustion, immense relief, and a trace of indescribable excitement and accomplishment.
The exam papers were collected one by one. Most students slumped in their seats. When their eyes met, they could see an unspoken connection born of having fought this unusual "battle" together, along with the relief of having survived it. An invisible cohesion, rooted in their shared "crime"-or rather, their shared response to a challenge-seemed to be quietly taking shape.
Kushina shook out her wrist, sore and swollen from writing at such speed. Out of habit, she first shot a slightly defiant glare at Minato, who remained as composed as ever. Then her gaze involuntarily shifted to Shinji Uchiha, lounging against his chair as though he had merely done something trivial. Her eyes filled with conflicting emotions: gratitude, shock, a hint of indescribable frustration, and... curiosity? In the end, she gave an awkward little huff that only she could hear and turned away. But the faint redness at the tips of her ears betrayed that she was far from unmoved. This time, she truly owed that infuriating, arrogant Uchiha a huge favor.
Shikaku gave an enormous yawn, making no attempt to hide his exhaustion, then flopped lazily back onto his desk as though his bones had been removed. With his chin against the cool desktop, he mumbled, "What a drag... That was exhausting... Still, now that I think about it, it was kind of interesting..." Yet an almost imperceptible smile of satisfaction curved his lips.
At last, Choza pulled out his treasured bag of snacks without a shred of guilt and took a huge bite. A foolish grin of utter contentment and happiness spread over his face, as though he had narrowly escaped disaster. He also remembered to shoot Shikaku a look full of gratitude that said, You're a real pal.
Shibi silently straightened his meticulously kept high-collared coat and sunglasses. Beneath his cuffs, the hardworking kikaichū had long since settled into stillness, as though nothing had happened.
Tsume vigorously rubbed Kuromaru's furry head, praising him generously in a low voice. "Great job! You're getting extra food tonight-the best meat!" Kuromaru seemed to understand. He affectionately nuzzled her palm, a comfortable rumble rising from his throat.
Inoichi let out a long breath and firmly rubbed his aching temples, showing clear signs of mental overexertion. Even so, he gave Minato and Shikaku a solemn, grateful nod. This exam had undoubtedly placed an enormous strain on his mind.
Masashige had already packed away his stationery in silence. His usual calm, steady expression had returned, revealing little emotion. Yet the thoughtful gleam deep in his eyes suggested that he had gained far more from this unconventional "war" than answers for his exam paper. Perhaps he had also come away with deeper reflections and insights about rules, methods, cooperation, and boundaries.
Minato gazed at the bright sunshine outside the window, still brilliant and seemingly oblivious to everything that had happened in the classroom. A warm, sincere smile lit his face, like sunlight melting ice and snow. This unusual written exam, which had come close to simulating an actual mission, had given him a deeper understanding than ever before of the weight and complexity behind the word "ninja." It was not merely the pursuit of supreme individual strength. It also demanded intelligence, cooperation, adaptability, and the skill and courage to use every available means to achieve a goal within an established framework of rules. The barriers of knowledge might tower high, but they were not insurmountable. What mattered was having the wisdom to break through them, the courage to try, and... companions who could trust and support one another.
His gaze passed over the classmates around him. Different in temperament and background, they had all displayed extraordinary potential, unique talents, and tenacious wills during that silent yet fierce trial. His heart filled with boundless anticipation and confidence in the future that was about to unfold for them.
And of course, there was that man! Shinji Uchiha! His unfathomable strength, the ease with which he handled difficult tasks, his grasp of the entire situation, and that final intervention-almost a display of virtuosity, yet precise and effective enough to instantly transform the "battlefield"-once again gave Minato an unprecedented sense of challenge and an intense drive to catch up, even surpass him. His eyes burning with earnest competitive spirit, he stared hard at Shinji and silently resolved to work even harder. He could not let Shinji leave him too far behind.
With their generation in it, Konoha's future was bound to become even more momentous and spectacular!
And this unconventional written exam was only a small prelude, the opening to a grand chapter yet to come. The real, harsher trials might only just have begun.
Umino Kakumatsu neatly stacked the thick sheaf of exam papers, laden with countless "secrets" and "wisdom," on the lectern. Her gaze swept across the room once more like a searchlight. These young ninja were exhausted in both mind and body, yet their eyes were brighter and sharper than before the exam, as though they had undergone a transformation. In a firm voice that reached every ear, she announced:
"Everyone, take a twenty-minute break. After that, assemble at Training Ground Three and prepare for the second exam-a simulated combat test."
Like a lake struck by a massive stone, the classroom's atmosphere changed in an instant. The lingering tension of the written exam's mental struggle and intelligence warfare gave way to fresh nerves and anticipation over physical stamina, ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and direct combat.
The silent war had ended, its smoke cleared.
Now a clash filled with sound-the collision of fists, feet, and ninjutsu-was about to make its thunderous entrance.
Before the young seedlings of Class A even had time to catch their breath, they were about to face another round of tempering flames, more direct and brutal than before.
