"And when you prepare a large-scale ninjutsu that requires gathering a lot of chakra, like the Great Fireball, you unconsciously take a deeper breath than usual, and the toes of your leading foot have a slight tendency to curl inward..."
With each point Shikaku calmly explained, Torai's face grew a shade paler. The shock in his eyes turned into horror at being seen through completely, with nowhere to hide. These tiny details, so deeply ingrained in his fighting habits that even he had never noticed them, had all been observed, recorded, and exploited by this seemingly lazy opponent!
"You... you've been analyzing and recording my... habits since the fight began?" A barely perceptible tremor crept into Torai's voice.
"The Ninja Academy's combat assessments have never been just about how much chakra you have or how powerful your ninjutsu is." Controlling Torai, Shikaku slowly raised both of his opponent's hands overhead into a standard surrender pose. His gaze reached across the connection between their shadows and met Torai's defiant eyes. "What matters more is what's in here." He lightly tapped his temple with his free left hand.
Silence fell over the sidelines. Everyone was stunned by this sudden reversal that overturned everything they had expected. From beginning to end, Torai had used the Uchiha bloodline abilities and his swift, fierce attacks to dominate the fight, keeping Shikaku firmly on the defensive. Who could have imagined that every move he made had unknowingly drawn him into the invisible trap his opponent had so carefully woven?
"Give up," Shikaku said, his voice carrying a barely noticeable hint of fatigue, though it remained firm. "I have enough chakra to maintain this technique for another three minutes. The referee only needs a moment to decide the winner."
Torai clenched his jaw, his teeth grinding audibly. Sweat gathered into beads on his forehead and slid down his cheeks. He desperately mustered the chakra in his body, trying to force his way out of the shadow's restraints. But those invisible chains seemed rooted in his shadow itself. The harder he struggled, the tighter they bound him, and the greater the mental pressure that fed back into him.
After roughly thirty seconds of stalemate, all his strength seemed to drain away at once. His taut muscles relaxed, and his face filled with defeat and a trace of bewilderment.
"...I surrender." The words came with extraordinary difficulty.
The referee immediately announced at the top of his voice, "The winner is Shikaku Nara!"
The Shadow Imitation Technique released at the announcement. Shikaku let out a long breath, as though an enormous weight had been lifted from his shoulders. His bone-deep laziness returned in an instant. He even exaggeratedly raised a hand to wipe away nonexistent cold sweat, muttering, "That was exhausting..."
Torai remained where he stood, watching with mixed feelings as Shikaku instantly reverted to his "slacker" mode. He could not help asking, "The injury on your left arm... did you let me hit you on purpose? Was that part of your... setup too?"
Shikaku lifted his left arm, examined the obvious burn, and touched it gently with a finger, baring his teeth in a wince. "Yeah. A necessary price. Rather than running all over the field and exhausting myself dodging every attack, selectively taking a little damage that doesn't really matter makes you more convinced your attacks are working, so you lower your guard. It also makes it easier to steer you toward the positions I've chosen... All in all, it's a pretty good deal." He sounded as though he were discussing a carefully calculated business transaction.
Torai fell silent for a moment, then suddenly shook his head and let out a laugh. His smile held a measure of acceptance and the respect of someone who had met his match. "Next time... I won't give you the time or opportunity to set up a trap like this."
"Then I'll just have to think of a new way that takes even less effort." Shikaku gave an enormous yawn, tears even welling at the corners of his eyes. "Honestly, fighting like this, where you have to stay completely focused the whole time, is really exhausting... It would be easier to just surrender."
Following the rules, the two formed the Seal of Confrontation. As their hands parted, Torai suddenly lowered his voice and voiced his last lingering question. "But even if you figured out my habits, how could you steer me into those exact positions so precisely during a fight? The battlefield changes in an instant. That's almost impossible..."
Shikaku blinked his perpetually sleepy eyes, and a faintly sly smile tugged at his lips. "Did you notice the fallen leaves blowing around the field? Especially the ones along the route you took. Didn't their positions seem... unusually orderly?"
Torai froze for a moment, then his gaze snapped toward the field as realization struck him-among the fallen leaves that had seemed to drift down naturally and shift with the wind, a few did indeed have positions and orientations that looked unnaturally "deliberate"!
Before the fight began, or during the brief openings between his first evasive movements, Shikaku had used tiny amounts of chakra or concealed movements of his hands and feet to adjust those leaves!
They had become silent visual markers he had placed across the battlefield! Amid his high-speed movements and fierce attacks, Torai had subconsciously followed the visual guidance of those "markers." Without realizing it, step by step, he had walked precisely into the points of the trap Shikaku had calculated in advance!
"As expected of the Nara Clan..." Torai exhaled slowly. This time, he truly accepted his defeat. Shaking his head with a rueful smile, he turned and left the field. This loss had taught him more than the past month of classes.
Shikaku ambled toward the sidelines, where Choza Akimichi was already waiting. Choza casually handed him a freshly opened bag of potato chips.
"Another one of those complicated, roundabout tactics," Choza complained indistinctly as he chewed his chips. "Why not just charge in and finish it with one punch? So much easier!"
"If I'd charged straight in, I'd probably be lying in the infirmary by now. He is an Uchiha, after all." Shikaku accepted the chips without the slightest hesitation and leaned lazily against the wall at the edge of the field, as though that brilliant battle of wits had drained every last bit of his energy. "Besides, Choza, winning with this..." He pointed to his head. "...isn't that more interesting?"
In the distance, Minato Namikaze smiled and gave Shikaku a look of approval that said "well done," along with a thumbs-up. Shikaku lazily raised a hand and waved in casual acknowledgment, then returned his attention to the chips in his hand, as though they were the most important thing in the world at that moment.
Sunlight filtered through the swaying leaves, casting ever-shifting patterns of light and shadow across the training ground, much like the battle that had just ended-on the surface, it had been a fiery clash of blazing flames and deadly shuriken, but beneath that lay a silent contest of cool judgment and boundless patience. Laying his plans in the shadows and securing victory through strategy: this was Shikaku Nara's own, inimitable path to victory.
