Background / History
Orochimaru is a disciple of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and is described as one of Konoha’s strongest fighters and greatest geniuses. By the time Makoto graduates, he is also a leading candidate for Hokage 35 37 44.
Discovering Makoto
Sent by Hiruzen to assess promising Academy students, Orochimaru approaches six-year-old Makoto during a nighttime training session with Obito. He exposes the contradiction between Makoto’s deliberately unimpressive school performance and his effortless victory over Asuma. He also detects unusually abundant vitality and an unexplained presence around the boy 35.
Orochimaru’s chakra pressure renders Obito unconscious. He then tests Makoto with snakes, forcing him to reveal Life Return, Shave, Tempest Kick, and Moonwalk. Orochimaru evades Makoto’s attacks while criticizing their predictable trajectories, then escalates from ordinary snakes to large sleeve-launched snakes and a surrounding swarm 35.
After Makoto cuts apart much of the swarm, Orochimaru ends the test rather than exploiting his apparent exhaustion. He praises Makoto’s taijutsu, gives him a contact card, and offers to recommend early graduation and more suitable training 36.
Taking an Apprentice
Reporting to Hiruzen, Orochimaru deliberately understates Makoto’s potential, describing his taijutsu talent as merely “decent.” When Danzō proposes taking the boy into Root, Orochimaru announces that he intends to make Makoto his apprentice. Hiruzen approves and instructs him to teach the child properly 37.
Makoto accepts the apprenticeship for its training opportunities, political protection, and potential value to his Lie-Into-Reality system. He remains wary of Orochimaru’s experimental interests and the future defection he anticipates from his knowledge of the original story 38.
Orochimaru agrees to let Makoto remain at the Academy for another six months. He gives him two snake-technique scrolls and invites him to ask questions, then warns that some people will resent the new master–student relationship 38 39.
Forming the Squad
After Makoto passes his graduation assessment at seven, Danzō again attempts to place him in Root. Orochimaru intervenes and proposes a three-person squad under his own instruction. The compromise allows Danzō to supply one Root-trained member while Hiruzen chooses the remaining member 43.
The resulting squad consists of Makoto, Kakashi Hatake, and Kazuya. During their introductions, Orochimaru notices an anomaly around Makoto following his claim to specialize in Yin-Yang Release. He questions the claim but does not pursue it after Makoto calls it a joke 46 47.
Eastern Border Mission
Orochimaru replaces the squad’s river-clearing assignment with reconnaissance on the Land of Fire’s eastern border. The mission is provisionally C-rank, with possible escalation to B-rank if enemies are encountered 47.
On the journey, he teaches terrain awareness before imposing a prolonged, increasingly fast march. Kakashi and Kazuya become exhausted, while Makoto remains physically fresh beneath his performance of fatigue. Orochimaru openly observes that Makoto’s stamina exceeds that of many jonin 48 49.
At the destination village, Orochimaru notices that the supposedly injured villagers look healthy and wear spotless bandages. He acknowledges Makoto’s observation without explaining the deception, then leaves that night to check the border while the younger ninja investigate. The subsequent discovery identifies the supposed Kumogakure threat as a Root operation to capture Makoto; Orochimaru’s advance knowledge of that plot is not established 49 50.
After Makoto and Kakashi defeat their attackers, Orochimaru returns and states that he has cleared out the enemies in the village. He examines the burned battlefield, though how much of Makoto’s fighting he witnessed remains uncertain 53.
Orochimaru establishes the official account that every attacker was from Kumogakure, concealing Konoha’s internal involvement. He praises Makoto for winning while outnumbered, warns him against underestimating the wider shinobi world, and predicts that rising border tensions may lead to the Third Shinobi World War. When Makoto asks for further training, Orochimaru agrees to teach him “a few interesting things” 54.
Rather than require an immediate return to Konoha, he tells Makoto and Kakashi to travel around the Land of Fire and broaden their horizons. Makoto interprets this as indirect protection: remaining outside the village would give Orochimaru time to address the danger posed by Danzō 54.
Return to Konoha and Personal Instruction
Hiruzen learns that Orochimaru’s team survived the Root attack and that Kazuya and more than a dozen Root operatives were killed. He confines Danzō and Root to their headquarters for six months. Homura and Koharu press to remove Makoto from Orochimaru’s supervision, but Hiruzen refuses and later explicitly affirms his trust in Orochimaru and Makoto 61 62.
On returning to Konoha, Makoto and Kakashi are taken to the Interrogation Department. Orochimaru’s report credits Makoto with much of the fighting, contradicting the boy’s attempt to downplay his contribution. Orochimaru subsequently comes to collect Makoto and brings him to meet the Hokage 62 63.
After three days of confinement, Makoto is given a break from missions and offered personal ninjutsu instruction in Orochimaru’s laboratory. Kazuya’s death is officially recorded as a mission casualty, and a replacement has not yet been selected. Orochimaru helps Makoto understand difficult subjects including chakra compression and storage 64.
He also offers Makoto the Ryūchi Cave summoning contract, presenting access to snake summons and a trial for Sage Mode. Makoto postpones his decision and privately resolves not to sign, believing the trial too dangerous for his current strength 64.
The lessons become a regular routine. Orochimaru often assigns ninjutsu scrolls and research topics for independent study, answers questions, and occasionally demonstrates techniques himself. Makoto acknowledges that his guidance is far more effective than learning through trial and error alone 72.
Research Apprenticeship
Makoto accepts Orochimaru’s invitation to participate in his research after gaining the “super research prodigy” talent. Orochimaru places a small, snake-like cursed seal on the back of Makoto’s neck, explaining that it allows him to monitor the boy’s location and condition. Makoto recognizes its potential for tracking and control but judges it nonlethal and does not resist or remove it at that time 74.
Orochimaru reduces the team’s routine missions so Makoto can spend more time in the laboratory. Over the following year, ending in Konoha Year 43, Makoto studies chakra, souls, sealing, forbidden techniques, biological experiments, kekkei genkai, and secret arts under him 74.
The laboratory later occupies the largest share of Makoto’s working time. He regularly assists with processing “living materials” and recording experimental data, while using Orochimaru’s biological knowledge and methods to advance his own concealed projects. Knowledge of biological structures from the laboratory also contributes to Makoto’s development of the Semi-Biological Puppet Core 98 100.
Orochimaru’s interest extends beyond technical instruction. During the controversy surrounding Sakumo Hatake’s failed mission, he asks Makoto for his opinion. Makoto gives a balanced answer about the conflict between missions and comrades, but Orochimaru suggests that his student already has a definite private judgment 105.
Rōran Mission
After Makoto’s promotion to chunin, Orochimaru leads a B-rank mission with Makoto, Kakashi, and Harada Yuichi to escort Princess Sara to Rōran and investigate her mother’s illness and the country’s unrest. At the ruined capital, he assigns Kakashi and Yuichi to search for Sara and Makoto to conduct wide-area reconnaissance, then leaves to investigate possible Sunagakure involvement 81.
Orochimaru reappears during the final confrontation with Mukade. Once Makoto seals the Dragon Vein’s core, Orochimaru pins the weakened enemy to the ground with the Kusanagi Sword. He twists the blade inside Mukade’s chest, destroying his organs and possible chakra nodes and preventing a final attempt to detonate the Dragon Vein 91.
Naruto, visiting from the future, recognizes Orochimaru and reacts with alarm because of his knowledge of the later attack on Konoha and Hiruzen’s death. Orochimaru does not acknowledge him during the confrontation 91.
Increasingly Distant Squad Leadership
Harada Yuichi eventually joins Makoto and Kakashi as the squad’s third member. As their combat coordination improves, Orochimaru becomes increasingly absent from missions. He initially accompanies them occasionally and offers advice, but later largely limits his involvement to supplying mission scrolls and receiving reports through messenger snakes 124.
Although the three remain members of the Orochimaru Team in name, Makoto regards him as a nominal consultant who occasionally supplies dangerous knowledge rather than a regularly present field leader 124.
Research Partnership with Danzō
Despite their political disputes over Makoto, Orochimaru and Danzō also maintain a mutually useful partnership. Makoto concludes that Danzō’s unexpectedly reliable, early use of Wood Release likely resulted from Orochimaru’s technical support. He further realizes that ideas he previously supplied to Orochimaru—including advanced biotechnology, cell fusion, and theories on stable Hashirama-cell transplantation—may have helped make that development possible 181 182.
After Danzō disappears, Orochimaru summons Makoto with a messenger snake and questions his unusually calm reaction. He points to Danzō’s hostility toward the Uchiha and the recent assassination attempt against Shisui, suggesting that Makoto may already know how Danzō disappeared. Makoto denies involvement and refuses to speculate without evidence 187.
Orochimaru eventually drops the inquiry, stating that Danzō was merely a partner with whom he exchanged benefits, whereas Makoto is his student. Makoto reciprocates by sharing peripheral research on cell differentiation, sealing formulas that stabilize rejection responses, and medicinal stimulation of Hashirama-cell activity. Orochimaru finds these ideas valuable, restoring their tacit understanding as teacher, student, and research collaborators 188.
Third Shinobi World War
During the war, Orochimaru’s laboratory becomes more elaborate and disturbing, with additional preserved organs and tissues, more advanced instruments, and an increasingly unrestrained atmosphere. Makoto interprets the conflict as having removed his teacher’s remaining caution about experimentation 187.
Orochimaru warns Makoto that the Uchiha will likely be sent to the front. In early spring of Konoha Year 46, Hiruzen orders one elite Uchiha unit to reinforce Orochimaru in the northern Land of Hot Water against Kumogakure, while another supports Sakumo Hatake in the western Land of Fields 188.
As commander-in-chief, Orochimaru remains at headquarters during a northern communications blackout to coordinate defenses and guard against Iwagakure. While Homura focuses on blaming the failed intelligence network, Orochimaru emphasizes the immediate need to respond. Minato and Shikaku organize a rapid interception of Kumogakure’s likely strike force 194.
He later approves Homura’s sweep strategy and personnel assignments, keeping Minato’s battle-worn squad as a mobile reserve. Makoto is assigned alongside Hyuga Keisuke and Kano Yuya, both possessors of kekkei genkai. Makoto suspects that Orochimaru uses his command authority to obtain battlefield specimens and interprets the pairing as a possible opportunity to collect rare samples; neither intention is explicitly confirmed 196 197.
When Makoto returns from a disastrous encounter with an elite Kumogakure force, Orochimaru’s support helps his account of the squad’s near-total destruction enter the records without close investigation. Orochimaru and Homura question him about reports of an unusual ocular awakening. Makoto displays what appears to be a newly awakened three-tomoe Sharingan rather than revealing his Mangekyō. Orochimaru seems to suspect more but lets the matter rest and tells him to recover 204.
Departure and Confrontation with Makoto
In Konoha Year 49, Nako informs Makoto that Orochimaru has left the village. Makoto decides to act before the departure is formally classified as defection and his teacher is designated an S-rank missing-nin. He fears that continued association would expose his own secrets, damage his political position, and give Orochimaru an opportunity to interfere with his plans 214.
Makoto secretly travels to the Land of Grass with Tufeng, Yako, and A Mu. He tells Orochimaru that either remaining in Konoha or becoming a rogue would endanger them both, and asks his former teacher to die so he can pursue his goals without interference. Orochimaru recalls having chosen Makoto despite Danzō’s opposition and recognizes their shared ambition and disregard for conventional restraints 215.
Tufeng begins the battle with chakra-absorbing Dragon Crystal Sand. Orochimaru senses its danger but reacts with fascination and summons Manda. The giant snake swallows Tufeng, whose sand then cuts Manda apart from within, forcing the mortally wounded summon back to Ryūchi Cave. Orochimaru recognizes Magnet Release in Tufeng’s abilities and is shocked to find it in an apparent Uchiha 216.
Orochimaru draws the Kusanagi Sword, but Makoto recalls Tufeng and sends A Mu forward. She combines Transparent Release, Ice Release, Magnet Release, and Storm Release, forcing Orochimaru to abandon the suddenly heavy sword and leaving burns on his shoulder and flank. Tufeng meanwhile spreads sand across the valley to block escape 217.
Believing close combat to be A Mu’s weakness, Orochimaru rushes her. She reveals Shikotsumyaku and impales him with a bone spear, then presses him with a coordinated assault using all five kekkei genkai. Orochimaru survives through evasion, substitutions, and body-shedding, but Makoto escalates the test by adding Yako while Tufeng restrains and drains him 218.
Apparent Death and Unresolved Remains
Orochimaru survives Yako’s Scorch Release by shedding his ruined outer skin. He creates shadow clones to distract his attackers, then uses another clone as a false fleeing body while hiding as a tiny white snake 219.
A Mu fills the valley with the bone forest of Dance of the Seedling Fern and detects his hiding place. Orochimaru emerges bodily from the small snake’s mouth and attempts one final resistance, but A Mu, Yako, and Tufeng attack together. Their combined bone blades, Scorch Release, and Dragon Crystal Sand leave a charred, shattered corpse and scraps of his clothing 219.
Makoto considers this only a possible temporary death, reasoning from his knowledge of Orochimaru’s resurrection contingencies in the original story. He does not attempt to locate and destroy every possible backup. His immediate objective is to remove Orochimaru as a political liability and obstacle, and he even considers reviving him later as an assistant or research subject 219.
After Makoto’s group departs and the bone forest crumbles, an unidentified black-robed man arrives half a day later. He gathers Orochimaru’s clothing and tiny fragments of charred snake tissue, then heads toward Konoha. The collection of these remains does not itself confirm Orochimaru’s revival 220.
Appearance
- Hair: Long black hair falling to his shoulders 38.
- Eyes: Narrow, golden eyes with snake-like slit pupils 35 38.
- Skin and hands: Pale skin; slender hands with neatly trimmed nails 35.
- Clothing: A standard jonin flak jacket 35 38.
- Voice and mannerisms: A distinctive rasp, nearly silent footsteps, and a habit of licking his lips while studying something interesting 35 46.
- Final visible remains: A charred, shattered body riddled with holes, with its original appearance almost unrecognizable; scattered clothing and fragments of burned snake tissue remain at the battlefield 219 220.
Personality
Orochimaru’s curiosity becomes intense when he encounters unusual abilities. Makoto’s vitality and self-created taijutsu excite him enough to conduct a dangerous test against a six-year-old. His scrutiny repeatedly makes Makoto feel more like experimental material than a student 35 46.
He is also controlled and strategically guarded. After the snake battle, his excited manner gives way to a cool evaluator’s composure. He understates Makoto’s talent to Hiruzen and gives Danzō little explanation for his decision to take an Uchiha apprentice 36 37.
As an instructor, Orochimaru combines harsh testing with practical teaching and occasional flexibility. He accepts Makoto’s request to delay graduation, offers help with gifted techniques, and teaches his squad how to read dangerous terrain. Makoto recognizes that this Orochimaru remains more approachable and responsible than the future rogue ninja he expects 38 48.
His mentorship nevertheless carries a strong desire for control. He grants Makoto access to valuable research while placing a monitoring cursed seal on him and arranging for him to spend more time in the laboratory. The relationship develops through genuine instruction, mutual usefulness, surveillance, and carefully managed trust rather than unconditional openness 74 188.
Orochimaru can prioritize an apprentice over a former collaborator when their interests align. He abandons his inquiry into Danzō’s disappearance after emphasizing that Makoto is his student, then readily accepts new research as the basis for reconciliation. His protection does not mean that he is unaware of Makoto’s evasions 187 188.
War accompanies a decline in his restraint. His laboratory grows more disturbing, and his field supervision becomes increasingly intermittent as research occupies more of his attention 124 187.
During his final confrontation, scientific fascination repeatedly competes with self-preservation. He is excited by Tufeng’s dangerous sand and A Mu’s multiple kekkei genkai even while recognizing that they threaten his life. At one point, his desire to understand A Mu’s body momentarily distracts him from the immediate danger 216 217 218.
He remains resourceful and defiant under extreme pressure. Rather than surrender when cornered, he repeatedly attempts to escape through shedding, clones, and snake transformation, then tries to fight once more after his final hiding place is exposed 219.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Pressure
Orochimaru can overwhelm a weaker ninja through his presence alone 35.
- Obito loses consciousness without a visible physical attack 35.
- Makoto identifies the pressure and the encounter’s power gap as evidence of a Kage-level opponent 35 36.
- During the Land of Grass confrontation, he is explicitly described as a top-tier Kage-level powerhouse with extraordinarily keen senses 216.
Snake Summoning and Ninjutsu
Orochimaru uses snakes to surround, pursue, and restrict an opponent’s escape routes 35.
- Summons ordinary snakes before escalating to a swarm numbering in the hundreds 35.
- Uses Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands to launch seven or eight thigh-thick snakes from his sleeves 35.
- The larger snakes continue pursuing Makoto after he escapes into the air 35.
- Ends the test by releasing the summoning, causing the snake remains to disappear in smoke 36.
- Uses small messenger snakes to summon Makoto and relay communications concerning squad missions 124 187.
- Has access to the Ryūchi Cave summoning contract and offers it to Makoto 64.
- Summons Manda, a mountain-sized, purple-scaled snake with horns, through hand seals, a blood offering, and contact with the ground. Manda demands three hundred sacrifices for this summoning 216.
Movement and Evasion
His refined movement allows him to avoid Makoto’s high-speed taijutsu with minimal effort 35 36.
- Avoids a neck-directed Tempest Kick with an almost imperceptible positional adjustment 35.
- Weaves through seven or eight descending vacuum slashes 35.
- Uses an exceptionally refined Body Flicker Technique, disappearing without visible hand seals or smoke 36.
- Sustains a punishing travel pace while his younger squad members tire 48 49.
- Twists his body with snake-like flexibility to evade A Mu’s multidirectional ice senbon 217.
- Reacts quickly enough to release the magnetically affected Kusanagi Sword and bend away from Storm Release beams, although two attacks still graze him 217.
Perception and Combat Analysis
Orochimaru repeatedly detects details Makoto hopes to conceal 35 47 49.
- Recognizes Makoto’s staged mediocrity by comparing his Academy behavior with his performance against Asuma 35.
- Senses abnormal vitality and a strange developing presence, though he does not identify its source 35.
- Notices the anomaly accompanying Makoto’s partial manifestation of Yin-Yang Release knowledge 47.
- Identifies predictable attack trajectories and evaluates speed, power, chakra control, and stamina 35 37 49.
- Recognizes that Makoto’s carefully neutral answer about Sakumo conceals a firmer personal position 105.
- Treats excessive composure as a possible tell when questioning Makoto about Danzō’s disappearance 187.
- Appears unconvinced by the full extent of Makoto’s account of his ocular awakening, but does not openly challenge it 204.
- Immediately senses the dangerous, almost living quality of Dragon Crystal Sand, then identifies Magnet Release after seeing Tufeng use it 216.
- Distinguishes A Mu’s Transparent, Ice, Storm, and Magnet Releases in a brief exchange. His inference that she is weaker in close combat proves mistaken when she reveals Shikotsumyaku 217 218.
Research and Instruction
Makoto regards Orochimaru as an expert in ninjutsu development, the human body, forbidden jutsu, body modification, and immortality-related subjects 36 38.
- Provides technique scrolls and offers individual instruction 38.
- Teaches awareness of ambush sites, river hazards, and exposed terrain 48.
- Uses combat and endurance tests to assess abilities his students conceal 35 49.
- Explains chakra compression and storage, assigns research problems, and occasionally demonstrates ninjutsu 64 72.
- Teaches Makoto subjects including chakra, souls, sealing, kekkei genkai, secret arts, and experimental methods 74 100.
- Conducts experiments involving living subjects and preserved biological material 100 187.
- Works on maintaining cellular activity and achieving stable fusion of chakra attributes 188.
- Receives technical ideas from Makoto on cell fusion, Hashirama-cell transplantation, cell differentiation, and stabilization of rejection responses. Makoto suspects that some earlier contributions helped Orochimaru provide Danzō with reliable Wood Release 181 182 188.
Cursed Seal
Orochimaru places a small, snake-like cursed seal on the back of Makoto’s neck upon admitting him into his research 74.
- States that the seal allows him to monitor Makoto’s location and condition 74.
- Makoto identifies it as a means of tracking and control, but initially judges it nonlethal 74.
- The seal’s full functions and any connection to resurrection are not demonstrated. Makoto’s later concern about cursed-seal backups is based on his knowledge of Orochimaru’s methods in the original story 74 219.
Kusanagi Sword and Swordsmanship
Orochimaru uses the Kusanagi Sword as a lethal weapon and can produce it from his mouth 91 217.
- Pins the weakened Mukade to the ground and rotates the blade within his chest to destroy organs and possible chakra nodes 91.
- Draws the sword after Manda’s defeat, intending to kill Tufeng and study his body and sand 217.
- Is forced to release it when A Mu’s Magnet Release makes it abnormally heavy, exposing him to a follow-up Storm Release attack 217.
Bodily Transformation and Survival
Orochimaru’s survival techniques allow him to endure injuries and escape situations that would otherwise be fatal. Makoto considers these abilities a greater obstacle than his raw combat strength 217 218.
- Uses substitutions and body-shedding while being pressured by A Mu’s combined kekkei genkai 218.
- Employs Skin Shedding Technique: Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique to discard skin ruined by Scorch Release and emerge with an intact layer beneath it 219.
- Conceals himself as a white snake only twenty or thirty centimeters long, then produces his full human body from its mouth in another shedding and substitution maneuver 219.
- Ultimately leaves an apparently destroyed body after a coordinated attack by three Kage-level fighters. Whether this destroys every means of survival or resurrection remains unresolved 219 220.
Shadow Clones and Escape Deception
Orochimaru uses the Shadow Clone Technique to create openings and misdirect pursuers 219.
- Creates two clones to intercept attacks from A Mu and Tufeng while an apparent main body flees 219.
- The fleeing figure is itself another clone, allowing the real Orochimaru to hide in snake form 219.
- His deception is overcome when A Mu transforms the surrounding terrain with Dance of the Seedling Fern and detects him within its coverage 219.
Command and Mission Management
Orochimaru serves both as a squad instructor and as a wartime commander-in-chief 46 204.
- Changes assignments, delegates reconnaissance, and separates his squad into investigative roles 47 81.
- Establishes an official external-enemy explanation for the Root attack against his team 54.
- Coordinates headquarters defenses during an intelligence blackout rather than joining Minato’s interception force 194.
- Gives final approval to operational plans and personnel assignments on the Land of Hot Water front 197.
- Supports Makoto’s casualty report sufficiently for it to be accepted without extensive investigation 204.
Power Progression
| Stage / Event | Demonstrated Power or Development | Evidence |

- Kusanagi Sword — Used to kill Mukade and later drawn against Makoto’s modified fighters; Orochimaru can bring it out through his mouth 91 217.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and political supporter. Hiruzen sends him to assess Academy talent, approves Makoto’s apprenticeship, and supports his right to instruct the boy 35 37 43. He later rejects the advisers’ attempts to break up the squad and explicitly expresses trust in Orochimaru and Makoto 61 62. Makoto anticipates that Orochimaru’s hidden experiments and eventual designation as a defector will destroy this protection, but the formal process is not shown before the Land of Grass confrontation 187 214 215.
- Uchiha Makoto — Apprentice and central object of curiosity. Orochimaru offers training and protection from direct Root recruitment, while Makoto remains wary of his scrutiny and experimental interests 36 38 43. Their bond develops into a research partnership marked by valuable instruction, technical exchanges, surveillance, and concealed projects 74 100 188. Orochimaru chooses not to pursue Makoto’s possible involvement in Danzō’s disappearance and supports his later battlefield account 188 204. Makoto ultimately regards him as an uncontrollable liability and orders his modified fighters to eliminate him, though he acknowledges his teacher’s assistance and entertains a possible future revival 187 214 215 219.
- Danzō Shimura — Political rival over Makoto’s placement. Orochimaru blocks his attempts to claim the boy outright but accepts a Root-trained member on his squad 37 43. They are also former research partners using one another for mutual benefit. Makoto suspects Orochimaru supplied the technical support behind Danzō’s early reliable Wood Release; Orochimaru later declines to pursue Danzō’s disappearance at the expense of his relationship with Makoto 181 182 188.
- Kakashi Hatake — Squad member assigned under the team arrangement approved by Hiruzen. Orochimaru subjects him to the demanding border march 43 46 49. He later advises Kakashi and Makoto to remain outside Konoha temporarily, leads them on the Rōran mission, and increasingly leaves their squad to complete assignments independently 54 81 124.
