| Occupation/Role | Psychological counselor; participant in the survival games 7 37 |
| Affiliation | Qi Xia’s exploration group, alongside Qiao Jiajin and Tiantian 25 27 |
| Status | Alive at the latest documented appearance 50 |
| First Appearance | Named introduction in Chapter 7; retrospectively identified as the woman who screamed during the opening death 7 |
Background / History
Lin Qin worked as a psychological counselor in Ningxia. Before arriving in the games, she was waiting in her office for a kindergarten teacher who had contacted her through WeChat. The client described distress caused by parental scrutiny and restrictions on disciplining children, but never arrived for the appointment 7.
An earthquake struck while Lin Qin was still in the office. She remembered the building swaying, the ceiling collapsing, and losing consciousness. Her account initially appeared connected to fellow participant Xiao Ran, also a kindergarten teacher, but Xiao Ran described a different reason for seeking counseling 7.
Lin Qin later reveals that she comes from 2068. Until the group compares their eras, her unfamiliarity with objects and language familiar to her companions makes her seem suspicious 35 50.
Appearance
- Age group: Described as a young woman 7.
- Facial features: A well-defined nose and rosy lips 20.
- Clothing: Qiao Jiajin describes her dress as “trendy,” though she considers the word old-fashioned 34.
- Distinguishing habit: Frequently covers her mouth and nose with her hand. She explains that leaving them exposed feels embarrassing, almost like being unclothed, because of masks 20.
Personality
Lin Qin is patient when explaining unfamiliar concepts, but becomes unsettled when others accuse her of dishonesty. During the opening game, she calmly explains classroom surveillance cameras to Qiao Jiajin, then struggles to defend herself against Zhang Chenze’s suggestion that she invented her client’s story 7.
Her curiosity focuses particularly on Qi Xia’s thinking. She repeatedly asks what is on his mind and remains interested despite his hostility. That curiosity can be tactless: asking what sort of woman would marry a swindler angers Qi Xia, although Lin Qin insists she intended no offense 11 24 30.
She combines practical judgment with clear moral limits. She restrains Qiao Jiajin during the dispute over Dao and rejects killing other participants for their rewards, arguing that murder would permanently change their lives even if they escaped 28 34. Her composure is not fearlessness: during Earth Ox’s game, she and Tiantian are so frightened by the black bear that they can barely stand 45.
Abilities & Skills
Psychological Counseling and Assessing Honesty
Lin Qin attributes her understanding of human nature and ability to recognize lies to her profession 17 25.
- Says she can usually tell whether someone is lying; she does not claim infallibility 17.
- Judges that Qi Xia is not lying about his proposed escape route, helping persuade Doctor Zhao and Officer Li to follow him 17.
- Distinguishes counseling clients from “patients,” considering the latter term rude in her work 24.
Observation and Puzzle Support
She contributes details that help the group act on Qi Xia’s deductions.
- Draws attention to the survival instruction written inside the animal mask 11.
- Notices Qi Xia testing the rotating table and alerts the others 12.
- Counts the table’s rotations by tracking its bloodstains, despite its nearly uniform shape 13.
- Proposes alternating the triangular shields’ points upward and downward. Qi Xia rejects this arrangement in favor of a cone-shaped defense 13.
- Recalls hearing the bronze bell during the opening death and notices that the square’s electronic message has disappeared 29.
Improvised Knot-Tying
Lin Qin ties two harpoon ropes together using an unusual knot that releases itself when one rope snaps under tension 15.
- Successfully preserves a usable harpoon where Qi Xia’s knot becomes too tangled to undo 15.
- Provides Officer Li with the sharpened tool needed to cut Han Yimo free before the retracting rope drags him into the wall 15.
Equipment / Items
- Improvised tabletop shields and handles — Uses the same survival equipment as the other captives during the harpoon defense and collapsing-floor escape 13 17 18.
- Salvaged harpoon — Temporarily secures it through her knot-tying technique, then gives it to Officer Li for Han Yimo’s rescue 15.
- Dao pouch — Receives nineteen Dao for surviving Earth Ox’s game. Later hands her pouch to Qi Xia without hesitation and accepts it back without counting its contents 45 49.
Relationships
- Qi Xia — Trusted teammate and the focus of her curiosity. She supports his escape deductions and insists on accompanying him, but refuses to explain fully why she cannot leave. His suspicion of her persists until the group discovers their different eras 17 24 30 35 50.
- Qiao Jiajin — Exploration teammate. She restrains him during the Dao dispute and helps him stand after Earth Ox breaks up his fight with Zhang Shan 25 28 47.
- Tiantian / Zhang Lijuan — Fellow member of Qi Xia’s group and her teammate in Earth Ox’s green arena. Lin Qin notices her distress before Human Rat’s game; both later survive the bear encounter unharmed 30 37 44.
- Li Shangwu — Fellow survivor who accepts her professional judgment about Qi Xia’s honesty. She later warns him about the shop assistant’s strength and the unreliability of his remaining companions 17 29.
- Han Yimo — Fellow captive whose rescue depends on the harpoon Lin Qin preserves 15.
- Zhang Chenze — Questions Lin Qin’s account during the Liar game, suggesting that her description of the kindergarten teacher could be fabricated 7.
- Zhang Shan — Protects her arena team by killing its black bear. Lin Qin later describes his brutal method to Qi Xia and Qiao Jiajin 44 45.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Opening Survival Trials
Lin Qin introduces herself during the Liar game and faces scrutiny over the apparent connection between her client and Xiao Ran 7. In the subsequent trials, she identifies clues, tracks the table’s rotations, and secures the harpoon used to rescue Han Yimo 11 13 15.
Her endorsement of Qi Xia becomes important during “Death From Above.” She points to his previous success in keeping them alive, prompting Xiao Ran to follow him; Doctor Zhao and Officer Li eventually join after hearing her assessment that he is not lying 17. The survivors escape the room after Qi Xia solves Human Snake’s questioning game 19.
Joining the Explorers
Upon reaching the ruined city, Lin Qin spots a damaged convenience store where the group can seek medical supplies 21. When the survivors divide between staying at the shop and exploring, she unexpectedly chooses Qi Xia’s group, offering her understanding of human nature as a useful skill. She recommends waiting until morning before departing 25.
After Han Yimo’s death and the accusations against Qi Xia, she leaves with Qi Xia, Qiao Jiajin, and Tiantian. She helps prevent the ensuing Dao dispute from becoming violent and warns Officer Li about the dangers of remaining behind 27 28 29.
Searching for Dao
Lin Qin tells Qi Xia she will accompany him into whichever game he enters. When he challenges her motives, she admits that, for reasons she will not disclose, she cannot leave 30.
After Human Rat’s death, she questions Qi Xia’s lack of visible grief and checks on his recurring headaches 33 34. She rejects his proposed murder-for-Dao strategy, which he reveals was a test of the group’s values, and questions the danger of his actual plan to repeatedly wager his life 34 35.
Earth Ox separates her and Tiantian from the two men. Their green team survives intact after Zhang Shan kills its bear; each of the nineteen survivors receives nineteen Dao 37 44 45.
Revelation of Her Era
While cooking bear meat, Lin Qin reacts strongly to the word “Internet,” which she has encountered only in history books. Comparing dates reveals that Qiao Jiajin comes from 2006, Tiantian from 2019, Qi Xia from 2022, and Lin Qin from 2068 50.
The discovery explains her earlier unfamiliarity with flyers and makes her behavior more understandable to Qi Xia. The group realizes that their arrivals—and possibly their earthquakes—need not belong to the same time 35 50.
Notable Quotes
“Yes. Think about it. Who’s kept us alive this far?” 17
“I refuse too. I don’t think this is a good idea. If we really kill someone, even if we get out of here, we’ll never be able to live the way we did before.” 34
Trivia
- Qi Xia notes that 林檎, read as linqin, meant “apple” before the Tang Dynasty. He considers the name poetic and memorable—potentially a disadvantage in a game where participants scrutinize one another’s stories 7.
- Her unfamiliarity with The Terminator, flyers, and the historical term “Internet” provides clues to her different era before she names the year 2068 34 35 50.
