"In accordance with Gotham Police Department regulations and City Hall's special commendation order, I hereby formally confer the rank of police lieutenant upon Edward Nygma. Lieutenant Nygma, I hope you will continue to use your intelligence to protect this city in your new position."
Below the stage, Li Jie sat in the front row with the Eastern District Precinct crew. Wilson tried to loosen the tie around his neck, only for Anna to drive an elbow hard into his ribs. He grimaced in pain but dared not make a sound. Anna herself sat perfectly straight, a sincere smile on her face.
Nygma lowered his head slightly so Chief Sarah could pin the lieutenant's double-bar badge to his chest. The spotlights were a little blinding, and the sea of people below made him feel as though countless unknown variables were scrutinizing him. He instinctively adjusted his glasses, trying to recover a little composure through the familiar gesture.
