Gunfire erupted in the backyard too. A moment later, Wilson reported over the radio, "Team B, all clear!"
Shouts echoed through the empty factory. Li Jie ejected his empty magazine and deftly slotted in a fresh one. The soft click as he flicked the safety back on sounded especially distinct in the brief silence. He looked around. His officers were working in pairs, expertly cuffing the dealers on the floor who were still breathing.
He had McNaught and Bushnell gather the confiscated drugs for photographs and sealing. Wilson walked over with his gun, glanced at the dead criminals on the floor, then took a notebook from his pocket and crossed out several names.
Li Jie glanced at him and frowned. "How long is it going to take you to catch Moth by process of elimination? With Gotham's population, he'll probably die of old age before you find him."
"Hey! Sheriff, let's get one thing straight!" Wilson lifted his chin proudly. "Your squad is assisting me on this operation. And I'm due to make sheriff next month too."
"Fair point." Li Jie lazily beckoned to Bushnell. "Ron, want to hear what happened to Sheriff Wilson in Florida... urgh..."
Wilson lunged at him, grabbed his neck, and clamped his other hand over his mouth. "Brother, I was kidding. You're the boss."
Li Jie swatted his hand away. They were idly shooting the breeze when his phone suddenly rang. He took it out, glanced at the screen, and nearly threw it out of his hand.
