Searchlights cut through the night sky, casting glaring pools of light across the concrete yard behind the East End Police Department.
The regular officers had already been evacuated, and Gordon had led the East End rookie squad in sealing off the scene. Li Jie was loading the last ammunition crates into the van. The bullets soaked in holy water gave off a faint golden glow inside the crates. Fully armed, Wilson leaned against the door and watched him. "You really aren't taking me?"
"I'll say it one more time. You're not coming. Follow orders." Li Jie turned and sat on an ammunition crate, fixing his Black partner with a stern look. "This isn't a street shootout with Falcone's gang. Even I don't know what we'll run into."
"No." The Black officer shook his head firmly. "We're partners, right? You can't leave me out of something this exciting."
"Cut the fucking bullshit. This kind of excitement can actually get you killed." Li Jie rolled his eyes. "Besides, I have no idea how this trip will turn out, and the odds aren't good. You're better off staying out of it."
"You're the one talking fucking bullshit. What am I supposed to do? Go home? Huh?"
Wilson knocked the butt of his shotgun against the van. "And what about tomorrow? If you don't come back, and they ask, 'Wilson, where's your partner?'
"What do I say? Tell them, 'I don't know. They went on an adventure in Hell, and I went home to sleep.'"
