"He's not coming. Sounds like he has guests." Li Jie hung up the phone and spread his hands regretfully.
"Who?" Wilson approached with a strange, twisting gait. "Whoever it is... hic... that's... his loss... hic!"
"Yeah! Yeah!" a crowd of thoroughly tipsy officers chorused loudly.
"Ah..." Li Jie sighed. "What if it's Bruce Wayne?"
"Oh..." A momentary silence fell, followed by a collective groan.
"Then it really is... our loss."
By two in the morning, most of the officers were slumped all over the place. Some snored over the tables, while others supported one another as they called rides home.
Li Jie knew he wasn't drunk at all, just a little dizzy. The alcohol had slowed his thoughts somewhat, but he felt perfectly alert, full of strength, and absolutely fine. He could still stand there smiling and saying goodbye to each departing colleague.
