When Li Jie looked out through the plane window, he couldn't help jumping in surprise.

Was I seeing the fucking sun?

He almost blurted out those last two words, but immediately realized it was the time difference. There was roughly a three-hour difference between the East and West Coasts, making time itself feel stretched out.

Li Jie checked the clock in the airport concourse. It wasn't even six yet. Carrying his modest luggage, he walked out of the terminal and called Oliver Queen.

The call connected after a few rings, and Oliver's slightly surprised voice came through. "Sheriff? You didn't even tell me beforehand. Stay right there. I'll send someone to pick you up."

After hanging up, Li Jie found a bench and sat down. He really did need a few minutes to adjust. Gotham's airport was always shrouded in a thin gray mist. The sunlight on the West Coast was far brighter than Gotham's, almost painfully dazzling.

About twenty minutes later, a black Cadillac pulled up at the curb, and a burly Black man got out and walked toward him.

"Sheriff."

"Diggle." Li Jie picked up his bag and went to meet him. "Oliver's friend, bodyguard, and driver. Speaking of which, has he given you a raise?"

"Ha! You know how it is." Diggle laughed and opened the car door for him. "Bosses are all the same."

The car rolled onto the highway, heading north along the coastline. Li Jie lowered the window and let the salty sea breeze blow in. The sunlight was still strong, but hung low, painting a glittering golden road across the ocean.

"This is fantastic."

He squinted out the window. "A June evening in Gotham could never be this bright."
