"Superman, is this journey dangerous?"
Dangerous?
He remembered the strongest boxer in the universe, the dispute between Clark and Kal-El, the chains forged with the power of a reversed black hole, and the swarms of robot soldiers whose strength rivaled Kryptonians.
"Yes, it's very dangerous."
He answered as he helped Alisa into her spacesuit, put wireless earphones on her, and lifted her into his arms.
"But I'll keep you safe."
"Are we leaving now, then?"
"Yes. We're going home."
His red cape wrapped around them as they flew into the boundless universe once again. There was no wind there, no sound, only endless darkness and distant starlight. Superman flew steadily, like a ship carrying his only passenger across a silent sea.
When Alisa looked back, the planet that had once imprisoned him had shrunk to a tiny dot. She kept watching until it blended into the other stars and she could no longer find it.
"Superman, why can you fly?"
"Because a yellow sun makes my cells..."
"I've seen planes shoot out smoke. Do you fly on fart power too?"
"I..."
"It's okay. If you're too embarrassed to tell other people, you can tell me. I won't tell anyone."
They continued onward. Ahead, amid the sea of stars, lay a vast nebula. Pink gas bloomed like flowers, with newborn stars nestled within it, shining like diamonds.
"So pretty."
Alisa stared at the nebula, utterly absorbed. "What's that?"
"That's a stellar nursery," Superman said. "New stars are born there. The gas and dust slowly gather together, building up and growing heavier until nuclear fusion ignites at the center, and a new star lights up."
