Ginkgo Garden Cemetery lay in Gotham's northern outskirts, covering more than three hundred acres. Victorian headstones jutted crookedly from slopes of withered yellow grass; some leaned so badly that only the tree trunks propping them up kept them from falling. Wind and rain had worn the names carved into the stone down to shallow grooves, legible only when the light struck them at an angle.

Batman crouched behind a nineteenth-century headstone, his lenses switched to thermal imaging. There was no one in the cemetery-not even any animals. Rats, opossums, stray cats, the creatures found in every corner of Gotham, had vanished completely here.

Batman stopped and glanced back at him. Dick stood with his hands on his hips, his chin raised slightly.

"They left it for you deliberately," Batman said.

"I know."

"You know?"

"Barbara checked." Dick shrugged. "That lead about the labyrinth showed up at exactly the right moment, just when my investigation into the Galloway Foundation hit a wall. Barbara said it was either a trap or a test."

Batman watched him
