"Come on, can't we find a car that actually works?"
Bob's suit was a rumpled mess, two buttons had popped over his stomach, his tie hung crooked, and his dress shoes were coated in dust. He followed Li Jie with a gun in hand, panting nonstop.
A strip of gauze was wrapped around his wrist, though the earthquake itself hadn't hurt him in the slightest. At the Gotham Police Department's Eastern District Precinct, every veteran officer had MAX-level escape skills, let alone the esteemed chief. The instant the earthquake struck, he had kicked his chair aside and dived under his desk.
The sturdy desk and reasonably solid building structure had successfully protected him. But as the shaking gradually stopped, Bob discovered an embarrassing problem...
He was stuck under the desk and couldn't get out, until Superman pulled him free while dismantling the building.
"We could certainly find a few cars, but there aren't many roads left to drive them on."
Li Jie stopped for a few seconds, watching Bob catch up, gasping for breath. "Still, I never expected the construction crew you hired to actually do the job properly."
To his surprise, the Shelter School run by the Police Department was one of the least damaged buildings. Most of the damage inside was to fluorescent tubes, glass, and decorative pictures on the walls. The building had tilted as the ground settled, but it remained standing. When the officers arrived, most of the children had evacuated safely to the playground, and Harper was cleaning the wounds of a few who had fallen or been cut by broken glass.
"Of course they did. They got paid double."
Bob took a few great gulps of air, adjusted the shotgun on his shoulder, and beckoned to Li Jie. "Enough talking. Give me a hand..."
