The E350 slowly came to a stop at the edge of Diamond Plaza. Li Jie jumped out, took a deep breath, and looked up at Gotham's defining landmark.
Beneath the gloomy sky, Wayne Tower stood like an unsheathed sword, or a silent monument. Its base was built of heavy stone, carved with the glory and arrogance of Gotham's gilded age. Higher up, its lines grew sharper and colder, finally becoming a spire clad in dark glass that pointed straight toward the heavens.
That thing was fucking tall.
He swore inwardly. The oppressive weight of that height was tangible, as though the entire tower might topple toward him at any moment and crush him along with the little Patrol Van.
Lights came on one after another along the tower as night fell. Reflected neon twisted and flickered across the slick surface of its outer walls like a flowing waterfall. He craned his neck until a faint ache spread through its back, but mist curled around the tower's waist, and its tip faded in and out of the low clouds. A glamorous reception was about to take place up there, while the ground below might soon become a battlefield of flying flesh and blood.
