Eiri's house.
As soon as Eiri closed the front door, a voice called out from behind her.
"Oh my~ Eiri, you're back so early today. Did you manage to buy the books?"
"It's Mom, you startled me," Eiri said, patting her chest as she spoke to Sawamura Sayuri.
"What's wrong? Why are you being so cautious?" Sawamura Sayuri asked curiously.
"It's nothing, I'm heading back to my room," Eiri replied, walking up the stairs. She suddenly remembered something and turned back. "Oh, right, Mom. I met Luo Yu today."
Sawamura Sayuri: "Luo Yu from the Luo family, the one who ran away from home three years ago?"
"Yes, him. I didn't expect him to be a student at the Private Integrated High School too."
"Ara ara. Then Eiri, you should put in more effort. Didn't you always play with him when you were little?"
"I was just learning drawing techniques from him!"
"Whose personality did this child inherit?" Sawamura Sayuri watched Eiri flee, sighing with emotion.
Inside Eiri's room.
"Honestly, what is Mom talking about?" Eiri's mind conjured images of her childhood with Luo Yu. "We were just drawing together."
This is so annoying, I'd rather read a novel.
Eiri then took out "Flame Chasers" and began to read.
Volume two picked up right where volume one left off.
At the beginning of this volume, the settings for the Honkai that were unclear in the first volume were explained.
The Honkai was born alongside civilization. The more humanity's civilization developed, the stronger the Honkai's will became. To resist the development of civilization, the Honkai would also create extremely powerful humanoid individuals, known as Herrschers.
Upon seeing the setting for the Honkai, Eiri became certain that the story background of "Flame Chasers" was not simple. The slice-of-life beginning of the first volume was likely a deception.
After Kevin and Mei joined the Flame Chasers, they were assigned to two different departments. This made sense, as one was a soldier and the other a researcher.
Next was Kevin's daily training in the military, while Mei began her studies under Mobius.
Eiri found herself lost in thought while looking at Mobius's illustration. After a long while, Eiri snapped back to reality. Looking at the illustration of the green-haired woman, she exclaimed, "As expected of Prometheus-sensei, your drawing skills are as excellent as ever. Is this Dr. Mobius? She seems different from the rumors in the book. Never mind, I should keep reading."
The peaceful days were short-lived, and the Fourth Herrscher soon appeared. Kevin, as a soldier, participated in the battle to defeat the Fourth Herrscher.
After paying a certain price, humanity successfully defeated the Fourth Herrscher.
After defeating the Fourth Herrscher, Kevin returned to his normal life. Training, constantly training. Gradually, Kevin's simulated training scores ranked first among the Flame Chasers. This meant that, at least on the surface, Kevin was now the strongest human in the world.
Meanwhile, Mei had also achieved considerable progress. Within the Flame Chasers, Mei was gradually being referred to as Dr. Mei.
From the fans' perspective, this plotline was the epitome of a classic, heroic narrative.
A young boy and girl learned the secrets of the world and joined a secret organization. The male protagonist grew stronger step by step, preparing to save the world. The female protagonist was not merely a damsel in distress but also grew stronger in her own way.
Moreover, Kevin's growth wasn't for the sake of saving the world. Anyone who had read the first volume knew that everything Kevin did was for Mei.
The Fifth Honkai Outbreak also descended. This time, Kevin, as part of a suicide squad, led his team to be the first to confront the Fifth Herrscher.
However, when Kevin and his troops arrived at the scene, it was already in ruins. Everything around them was frozen over. Only the corpse of the Fifth Herrscher lay in the large crater at the center.
Kevin followed orders and recovered the Fifth Herrscher's body.
The Fifth Honkai Outbreak ended.
To celebrate the successful defeat of the Fifth Herrscher, the Flame Chasers decided to hold a banquet.
A large number of characters would be making an appearance at this banquet.
"Hua, have you picked out your dress? We're attending the banquet today."
"I've chosen it," Hua replied, trying on her formal attire. "But, Captain, I don't understand."
"Don't understand what?" Himeko asked.
Himeko, the captain of the Fifth Squad, was also the one who saved Hua during the Third Honkai Outbreak.
"Why are we holding a banquet? We didn't even get to see the Fifth Herrscher," Hua asked Himeko, looking at her with confusion, awaiting an answer.
"I see. Hua, what do you think the current state of the Flame Chasers is?" Himeko asked Hua with a smile.
Hua was momentarily stunned by her captain's question but quickly regained her composure.
Before she could answer, however, Himeko continued on her own.
"The other people I met on the way, they all had smiles on their faces. Do you know why, Hua? Because they survived! That's why a banquet is necessary. It's the only way we can truly feel like we've overcome the Fifth Honkai Outbreak, even if we weren't the ones who solved it."
"I understand, Captain."
On the day of the banquet.
"A dance... I've thought of more than ten outfits, but I guess I still need to try them on to decide," the pink-haired girl was trying on clothes.
"Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock!"
A rapid series of knocks echoed.
"Hmm, who is it? Is it time already?" the pink-haired girl asked the person knocking on the door. Then she opened the door.
"E-L-Y-S-I-A—!" a voice gritted out from outside the door.
"Oh... isn't it Dr. Mobius? Your dark circles seem to have gotten worse than the day before yesterday. You should get some rest," the pink-haired girl, no, Elysia said with a smile to the person outside.
"Thump!"
Mobius slammed a pile of clothes against the door. "Did you stuff these clothes into my closet again?!"
"Aww~ Don't be so shy? Dr. Mobius, it's rare that I kindly prepared so many clothes for you. You should try wearing different styles once in a while?"
Hearing this, Mobius wore an expression that suggested she wanted to kill someone.
"You dare say that! Rare? Didn't you stuff them into my closet last time?"
"Mhm?"
"There won't be a next time! Elysia."
Seeing Elysia's unyielding attitude, Mobius could only give up. After issuing a warning to Elysia, she turned and left.
"Dr. Mobius is still so shy. It was the same last time; she just threw the clothes away and left. Huh? This one is?" Elysia looked at the clothes Mobius had thrown, pondering over one of them briefly.
Suddenly, Elysia clenched her right fist and hit her left palm, looking as if she had just realized something.
"It's this one. I'm so nostalgic! I wore this to the banquet last time, and I didn't expect I'd given it to Dr. Mobius again. Hmm~ In that case, I'll wear this one to the banquet this time too! Everyone's expressions will surely be wonderful."
Chapter Twenty-Three: The Sixth Herrscher Appears
That night, in the banquet hall.
"Excuse me, would you like something to drink?" Elysia, dressed as a maid, weaved through the crowd with a tray of drinks.
"Thank you." The young boy politely accepted the drink and thanked her.
"Then I wish you a pleasant time." Elysia turned to leave, carrying her tray.
Suddenly, a voice came from behind her.
"Wow! I didn't expect the Flame Chasers to be so formal, even having maids serve drinks."
"She doesn't recognize me. It seems she's new. Hmm? Who's that up ahead?" Elysia spotted two familiar figures and went closer to get a better look. "It's Kevin and Hen. What are they talking about? I should go say hello."
At this moment, Kevin and Hen were chatting.
Hen: "I didn't expect you to grow so quickly. When I first brought you into the Flame Chasers, you were just an ordinary high school student. Now you've become an excellent warrior."
Kevin: "This is nothing. But I'm still quite grateful to you, Senior Hen. If it weren't for you back then, Mei and I might have died in the Third Honkai Outbreak."
Hen: "Dr. Mei was designated by the higher-ups. Even without me, someone else would have saved you."
"But it was you who found us," Kevin said earnestly.
"Alright, let's change the subject," Hen decided. "By the way, I heard you had a new recruit who you made cry? You disciplined him so hard?"
"Are you talking about Kosma?" Kevin scratched his head awkwardly. "It was my first time training a recruit, and I didn't expect to make him cry. Maybe I was too strict."
"Pfft! Haha, you were too strict then. I've been in the Flame Chasers for so long, and this is the first time I've heard of someone being disciplined to tears."
"Oh? What are you guys talking about that's so amusing?" Elysia suddenly chimed in.
"It's Elysia," Kevin said, looking at her. "What's with the outfit?"
"What do you think? Isn't it cute?" Elysia spun around.
"If I remember correctly, you wore this same outfit last time, didn't you?" Kevin asked after a moment's hesitation.
"Mhm~ What do you think, surprised?"
"Quite surprised, actually. Thinking back, you were wearing this when we first met."
"Oh, Kevin. You've suddenly become so eloquent," Elysia feigned surprise.
Looking at Elysia's expression, Kevin didn't know what to say next.
"Alright, Eli. Stop teasing Kevin," Hen intervened, coming to Kevin's rescue.
"Oh, isn't it Hen? Long time no see."
"Long time no see. I didn't expect you to grow up so much either," Hen said with a sigh.
"After all, I'm still very young?" Elysia said with a smile.
"Eli, Senior Hen. Have you known each other for a long time?" Kevin asked, observing their interaction.
"You don't know? That's right. I don't think I ever told you," Hen mused. "I remember it was a long time ago. The Flame Chasers hadn't even appeared yet. We detected Honkai reactions in a place called [Vostok-51]. When we arrived at the scene, we found nothing. That's where Elysia and I first met."
Elysia: "Our little town was terrified back then. After all, a group of mysterious people suddenly appeared in town, saying there might be danger."
"It was just a precaution. Since we detected Honkai reactions, we had to check the scene no matter what. However, I didn't see you the second time I went to [Vostok-51]. Where were you then?" Hen asked Elysia.
"I was traveling then."
"Our second meeting must have been at the Flame Chasers."
"I remember Hen was very surprised back then, wasn't he?"
"After all, the little girl in my memory had suddenly become a beautiful young woman and my comrade."
"Oh, Hen, you're good at giving compliments too."
"After all, I'm a married man. I know how to make women happy."
"Hen, Blanca will be unhappy if she hears that."
"Please, Elysia. Don't tell Blanca about this."
"Mhm? I'll consider it." Elysia turned around, her head angled at a standard forty-five-degree angle, like in a bridal photo. "You two continue chatting, I'll be going now."
After saying goodbye, Elysia continued to hold her drink, weaving through the crowd like a true maid.
"She's got quite her style, doesn't she? Kevin."
"Indeed."
"Eiri, time to eat." Sawamura Sayuri's voice pulled Eiri from her world of books.
"Got it, Mom." Eiri replied, placed a bookmark where she'd stopped reading, and then closed the Flame Chasers.
It was really interesting. Although, so far, besides the Fourth Honkai Outbreak, most of it had been slice-of-life, Eiri could tell these daily events were all setup. However, what Eiri cared about most were the illustrations.
The illustrations by Teacher Prometheus were amazing. Especially Elysia's. Thinking of the pink-haired girl in the illustration, Eiri couldn't help but sigh, "She's so beautiful. Even though they're all in the same art style, I feel like Teacher Prometheus put more effort into this one. It feels a bit more refined than the others."
That's only natural! After all, she's Elysia! Luo Yu focused all his attention when drawing Elysia, striving to do his best. If you love Elysia, you have to give her the best!
At the dinner table, Eiri quickly finished her meal and put down her bowl.
"I'm full. I'm going back to my room now."
