Chapter 53: Flame Herrscher, Defeated

Seeing Himeko abandon her defense and begin attacking him, Kevin did not follow suit by switching to defense. Instead, he continued his assault. After all, his objective was to eliminate the Herrscher, and defense wouldn't achieve that. Furthermore, he couldn't afford to give Himeko any breathing room.

The two clashed, trading blows. It was like a playful exchange, "You burn me with fire, I freeze you with ice," but in reality, every attack was lethal, and each was parried by the other.

As time wore on, Kevin's control over ice and snow grew increasingly refined. By the latter stages of the fight, they no longer relied on physical contact, instead engaging in a full-blown power struggle with their respective abilities.

Himeko channeled all her Honkai Energy, preparing her final attack. Seeing this, Kevin also unleashed the full force of his ice and snow power.

At the center of this frozen land stood a white-haired man, silently observing.

I won. But there was no one to celebrate with him. Kevin felt no joy.

A hint of sadness even flickered in Kevin's eyes. After all, Himeko had retained her consciousness throughout the fight. Even as a Herrscher, Kevin still saw her as the familiar comrade, the captain of the Fifth Squad.

What saddened Kevin was that, due to the Honkai, he had been forced to kill his own comrade.

The red-haired beauty lay quietly on the ground, her chest pierced by the ice spear, still bleeding warm blood. The blood stained the ice spear a vibrant crimson before the cold leached away its warmth, slowly solidifying into a vivid flower.

Himeko had lost. Though she couldn't comprehend the source of Kevin's immense power, how his ice could freeze even her flames, it no longer mattered. She was now merely a defeated foe. Seeing the sorrow in Kevin's eyes, Himeko couldn't help but chuckle.

"Kevin, it was you... who won. Why... are you sad?"

Kevin offered no reply, only gazing at Himeko with even greater sadness.

"You... should... cough, cough... be happy. You... killed... another Herrscher. What a shame, that I... became a Herrscher. I can't... fight with you... until the end."

Himeko spoke intermittently, her time clearly running short.

"Kevin, I... cough cough, can I... ask you one... last thing? Hua, that child, I didn't... kill her. Can you... please... look after her for me? Consider it... an old friend's... dying wish."

"..." Hua. Kevin knew her. Himeko had once brought Hua to a dance, and Kevin had caught a glimpse of her. Looking at the dying Himeko before him.

"I will."

Kevin promised Himeko in a solemn tone.

Hearing Kevin's reply, Himeko expressed her gratitude, then smiled and closed her eyes, calmly accepting her death.

He was now a warrior of the Flame Chasers, the first Fusion Warrior.

Having reaffirmed his stance, Kevin appeared before Eden and Hua.

Though not close, Hua recognized Kevin as the Flame Chasers' strongest warrior and asked, "Captain Kevin, what are you doing here? And Captain, how is she? Did she... really become a Herrscher?"

Kevin's cold gaze fixed on the confused young girl. "The Seventh Herrscher has been eliminated by me. The Seventh Herrscher was undoubtedly the former captain of the Flame Chasers' Fifth Squad, Himeko. That's all I can tell you. Is your communicator still functional?"

Taking Hua's communicator, Kevin no longer paid attention to the still-confused Hua and instead connected to the Flame Chasers' internal network.

"This is Kevin. The Seventh Herrscher has been successfully eliminated. You can send personnel to search for survivors now." Ignoring the cheers from the other end of the communicator, Kevin refocused his attention on Hua and Eden.

As for whether Eden could join the Flame Chasers? Kevin hadn't even considered that question from the beginning.

Never mind the benefits of having a world-class star like Eden join the Flame Chasers.

Just the fact that the pink-haired girl was in charge of recruiting new members meant Eden couldn't escape!

"Elysia, I need your help with something," Kevin said directly, without beating around the bush.

"Oh my..." Elysia was slightly surprised. "It's rare for you to need my help, Kevin."

Elysia noticed Eden behind Kevin, her eyes darted around, and then she chuckled, "Let me guess, it has something to do with the beautiful young lady behind you, right?"

"That's right."

Kevin turned and introduced Eden, "Ms. Eden, this is the friend I told you about, Elysia. She will handle all your onboarding procedures from now on."

Upon hearing this, Eden stepped forward and introduced herself to Elysia, "Hello, Miss Elysia. I'm Eden, and I'm here to join the Flame Chasers. I'll be counting on you."

"Just call me Eli. All my friends do," Elysia said with a smile. "Joining the Flame Chasers? Of course, no problem. Leave it all to me."

Seeing that the matter was settled, Kevin spoke, "Elysia, I'll leave Ms. Eden in your care. I'm going to file my mission report now."

Watching Kevin's retreating back, Elysia still asked with concern, "Kevin, are you alright?"

Kevin paused his steps but continued to walk forward. Kevin knew what Elysia was asking, so he gave his answer:

"I'm fine, Elysia."

"That doesn't look like you're fine at all." Elysia said indignantly, watching Kevin disappear from view.

"Miss Elysia," Eden called out, trying to get Elysia's attention. She succeeded.

"Call me Eli."

"Miss Eli."

"..."

Looking at the pink-haired girl in front of her, who was smiling and watching her without speaking, Eden sighed softly. "Eli."

"Is there something you need, Eden?" Seeing that Eden had finally used the name she wanted, Elysia responded.

"It's like this..." Eden decided to trust her intuition. "I'm an artist, and I can vaguely sense the emotions of those around me. Although it's not apparent on the surface, Mr. Kevin seems very sad."

"You can tell, Eden?" Elysia looked at Eden with some surprise.

"Yes, but I don't know the source of Mr. Kevin's sadness."

"It's natural to be sad," Elysia said, her smile gone.

"Eden, do you know who the Seventh Herrscher is? Oh, I'm sorry, I almost forgot you don't know what a Herrscher is."

"The Seventh Herrscher's name is Himeko. She was the captain of the Fifth Squad of the Flame Chasers. In other words, she was my and Kevin's comrade."

Eden seemed to finally realize something. Her eyes widened.

"That's right..." Elysia sighed, "This means Kevin personally killed his comrade..."

Chapter 55: Transition

Looking at the playful and cute pink-haired girl before her, Eden's mood also brightened. The two girls officially formed a bond at this moment.
