Ch. 21The second mini-test: Sushi

Odin used his knowledge of sushi to prepare a dish for Menchi’s test and passed, while the other examinees struggled to follow. As failures mounted, he wondered if he might be the only examinee to earn a Hunter License this year.

  • Odin told Ponzu that sushi used raw fish, rice, and vinegar, then accepted her help finding a river.
  • Odin caught and prepared suitable fish with his Rabbit Talisman, while Ponzu helped drive fish toward him.
  • Odin found rice in the warehouse, made nigiri sushi, and shared the remaining rice with Ponzu and Gon’s group.
  • Menchi tasted Odin’s sushi and passed him, prompting the other examinees to resume their attempts.
  • Odin watched Menchi fail Ponzu and Gon’s group and wondered if he would be the only examinee to get a Hunter License.

Ch. 22Netero's appearance

Odin stopped the candidates from attacking Menchi after she failed all but him, and Netero arrived to make her set a new, objective test. At Pudding Mountain, Menchi demonstrated how to retrieve Grape Vulture eggs, leaving the candidates to attempt the challenge.

  • Menchi announced that only Odin had passed the sushi test, and angry candidates protested her decision.
  • A burly candidate attacked Menchi, but Odin caught his wrist and threw him aside to prevent the candidates from causing trouble.
  • Netero arrived and asked Menchi about the purpose of the Hunter Exam, prompting her to acknowledge her mistake and request a new test.
  • Netero allowed Menchi to remain an examiner, and she chose a test requiring candidates to retrieve Grape Vulture eggs from Pudding Mountain.
  • Menchi demonstrated how to catch an updraft, seize an egg from the cliffside nests, and return to the summit.

Ch. 23Grape Vulture eggs in the ravine

Odin joined the Grape Vulture egg test despite having already passed the sushi test, then followed the other examinees aboard the airship after enjoying his egg. That night, he searched for a place to sleep while Tonpa spread misleading rumors about the next test.

  • Menchi encouraged Odin to collect a Grape Vulture egg, and he jumped from the cliff to begin the test.
  • Odin watched Gon for the right moment, released the spider silk, and rode an updraft to catch an egg.
  • Odin boiled and ate his egg as Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio also enjoyed theirs; about fifty-two examinees passed.
  • Menchi announced the end of the second phase and led the successful examinees with Buhara to the airship.
  • Tonpa spread misleading information aboard the airship, while Odin ignored him and searched for somewhere to sleep.

Ch. 24A night aboard the airship

Odin watched Killua practice the Zoldyck Family’s Rhythm Echo footwork against Netero and studied how its deceptive movements could improve his own fighting style. Killua left after realizing Netero was letting him try in vain, while Gon took his place and Odin returned to considering how to adapt the technique.

  • Odin heard fighting sounds from the lounge and found Killua trying to snatch a volleyball from Netero as Gon watched.
  • Odin recognized Killua’s movements as Rhythm Echo and analyzed how its controlled shifts, feints, and afterimages differed from his own speed-based style.
  • Killua tried for more than ten minutes without taking the ball, then told Gon that Netero had never moved from his spot and was only playing with them.
  • Gon insisted on continuing and took Killua’s place against Netero, while Killua left the lounge.
  • Odin decided Gon’s rough, instinctive movements would not help him and left while thinking about incorporating Rhythm Echo into his own fighting style.

Ch. 25The Top of Trick Tower

Odin tested his speed and new movement techniques against Netero, then arrived with the other examinees at the top of Trick Tower for the third Hunter Exam test. As the examinees considered how to descend, Odin wondered whether he could run down the tower’s exterior and find a way inside.

  • Netero invited Odin to try to take the volleyball, and Odin repeatedly attempted to outmaneuver him but failed.
  • Odin experimented with Rhythm Echo during the attempts, then returned to his room and trained with the technique through the night.
  • The airship brought Odin and the other examinees to the roof of Trick Tower, where Beans announced they had seventy-two hours to reach the bottom.
  • After Beans departed, Odin inspected the tower’s sheer exterior and considered running down its wall with the Rabbit Talisman.

Ch. 26It takes two

Odin and Ponzu navigated Trick Tower together, avoiding traps and solving a simple Hunter Exam question as they descended. They found a room with a countdown machine, but had not yet determined how to clear the floor.

  • A bald applicant tried to climb down the tower but was killed and eaten by magical beasts.
  • Odin and Ponzu discovered separate trapdoors, but Odin fell into a route that required two people, and Ponzu joined him.
  • Odin and Ponzu crossed a corridor of pit traps and opened a door by answering that this was the 287th Hunter Exam.
  • They descended through the tower's circular passages and used Ponzu's bees to identify door 6 among twelve numbered doors.
  • Inside door 6, Odin and Ponzu found a countdown machine and considered whether destroying it would trigger another mechanism.

Ch. 27Breaking Through the Tower's Traps

Odin and Ponzu descended through the tower, overcoming traps involving weight sensors, poisoned needles, and mirrors. They reached the seventeenth level, where a floor of pressure-sensitive plates threatened to open pits filled with mud and spikes.

  • Odin found a hidden door behind the machine and entered the descending stairwell with Ponzu.
  • Odin tested the suspicious stone slabs and determined the apparent weight-sensor trap was fake.
  • Odin triggered a volley of poisoned needles in a long corridor, then crossed near the ceiling; Ponzu followed with help from her bees.
  • Odin and Ponzu navigated a disorienting mirrored corridor by following directions from Ponzu's bees.
  • Odin and Ponzu reached the seventeenth level and found pressure-sensitive plates covering the floor above pits of mud and spikes.

Ch. 28The Third Test Ends

Odin and Ponzu descended the tower, overcame its traps and defeated the floor guard before reaching the underground plaza. They rested as other examinees arrived, including Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio, with more than twenty hours left before the deadline.

  • Ponzu's bees scouted the pressure-sensitive floor, and Odin pulled her back after she stepped onto a hollow panel above spikes.
  • Odin dodged the karate guard's textbook attacks, found an opening, and unbalanced him to win the key to the next floor.
  • Odin and Ponzu rested on the twenty-fourth floor, where Odin recorded the tower's traps and reviewed their mistakes.
  • Odin and Ponzu reached the plaza at the bottom of the tower and found Hisoka, Gittarackur, and Hanzo waiting there.
  • Bodoro, Pokkle, and other examinees arrived, followed by Gon, Killua, and Kurapika.
  • Leorio arrived exhausted and injured, recovered with Kurapika's water, and confirmed that he had passed.

Ch. 29Warship Island: An unfamiliar voyage

After passing the third phase, Odin and the other examinees were taken to Warship Island, where they had to find sea treasure to earn rooms in a ship hotel. The airship abandoned them during the night, leaving Odin and the others stranded for what had become a wilderness survival test.

  • Lippo announced that thirty-nine examinees had passed the third phase and led them aboard an airship to the next site.
  • Odin recognized the island with a warship embedded in its mountain as Warship Island, an unfamiliar detour from the exam he remembered.
  • Beans told the examinees they would rest there overnight, and the elderly couple explained that they had to pay for rooms with treasure from the sea.
  • Odin and Ponzu found treasure underwater, and Odin was assigned to share a hot room with the talkative Hanzo.
  • Odin and the other examinees woke as the airship lifted off and left them stranded on the island.
  • Odin realized Lippo had stopped him from reaching the airship and declared that the exam had become wilderness survival.

Ch. 30Finding a Way Out

Odin realized Warship Island would soon be submerged and found a map pointing to an island about ten kilometers away. After he revealed the clue, Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, and the other examinees rushed to search for boats, while Odin and Ponzu joined the search.

  • Odin examined the barnacles and water marks on the warship, then warned Hanzo that the rising sea would eventually submerge the island.
  • Odin asked Ponzu to send her bees scouting, and they found a map with a nearby island circled in red.
  • Odin estimated the destination was about ten kilometers away and told the examinees about the clue.
  • Killua jumped onto the ship's hull to reach the reefs, and Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and the other examinees followed.
  • Odin and Ponzu jumped down from the deck and headed toward the island's edge to find a boat.

Ch. 31The Bathtub Sea-Crossing Plan

Odin and Ponzu found no seaworthy boats, so they crossed the sea in a bathtub reinforced with tires. When a storm capsized it, Odin used the Rabbit Talisman to run across the water with Ponzu and reached the island.

  • Odin and Ponzu searched the reefs but found only wrecked ships, while Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio found a small boat with a hole in it.
  • Odin took an intact bathtub from the hotel, tied three tires to it for buoyancy, and set off with Ponzu using wooden boards as paddles.
  • As they neared the island, a storm raised the waves, filled the tub with water, and capsized it.
  • Odin grabbed Ponzu and activated the Rabbit Talisman, running across the waves while carrying her.
  • Odin reached the island with Ponzu as other examinees struggled through the storm behind them.

Ch. 32Hunting and prey

Odin and Ponzu rescued stranded examinees after the storm, then joined the other survivors aboard the airship. At Spectacle Island, Lippo announced the fourth phase: a seven-day hunt in which examinees had to collect six points by targeting one another.

  • Odin found a rope and used the Rabbit Talisman to run across the sea, tying stranded examinees together and bringing them to shore with Ponzu's help.
  • Lippo arrived by airship and announced that the examinees who had reached the island under their own power had passed the test.
  • After the storm cleared, the airship reached Warship Island and picked up Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, and the other examinees who had sailed there.
  • Lippo had the examinees draw number tags in the order they had cleared Trick Tower, and Odin drew number 38.
  • Lippo announced that each examinee's number was their assigned target and that they had seven days to return to the designated location with six points.

Ch. 33Landing on the Island · The Hunt Begins

Odin landed on Glasses Island, hid his number 48 badge, and spent the night recovering while other candidates fought. The next day, he tracked down his target, number 38, and approached him as the injured man rested by a stream.

  • Odin jumped from the Airship, buried his number 48 badge, and burned his notes about number 38.
  • Odin used the Rabbit Talisman to scout the island, then hid in a tree hollow and waited through the night while candidates fought nearby.
  • After recovering, Odin searched the woods and found several signs of injured or defeated candidates.
  • Odin spotted number 38 washing an arm wound by a stream and watched him rest from the grass.
  • Odin approached number 38 at a normal pace, and the man opened his eyes, took a fighting stance, and demanded to know who was there.

Ch. 34First blood

Odin defeated several examinees in the forest, collected their number badges, and came upon Ponzu being attacked by the Amori Brothers. He took down all three brothers, leaving Ponzu safe but the confrontation unresolved.

  • Odin knocked out a burly examinee and took his number 38 badge, then left without learning the man’s target.
  • Odin confronted a thin examinee who had followed him, dodged his throwing darts, and took his number 61 badge.
  • Odin calculated that he had three points from his own badge and the collected badges, with one extra badge, and continued through the woods.
  • Odin found Ponzu being attacked by the Amori Brothers and stepped in to protect her.
  • Odin defeated all three Amori Brothers in under three seconds.

Ch. 35Hunter and prey

Odin rescued Ponzu from three brothers, shared their number badges, and teamed up with her during the Hunter Exam. On the third day, someone knocked Ponzu unconscious and stole her target badge, so Odin gave her another badge to keep her in the exam.

  • Odin defeated three brothers, took their number badges, and gave all three to Ponzu after confirming none was her target.
  • Ponzu bandaged her shoulder and told Odin she wanted to become an Insect Hunter, while Odin said he aimed to become a Curio Hunter.
  • Odin and Ponzu left the clearing, found a cave to use as a base, and spent the next two days there.
  • On the third day, Odin hunted a wild boar for food and returned to find Ponzu unconscious outside the cave with her backpack searched and number 197 missing.
  • After Ponzu woke and realized her badge had been stolen, Odin gave her number 61, saying his other badges gave him enough points.

Ch. 36Gained and Lost Again

After Hanzo tracked them down, Odin and Ponzu stayed in their cave, but Killua soon arrived seeking badge 199. Odin fought Killua and gave him the badge; with Ponzu short on points again, they prepared to leave and find another.

  • Odin and Ponzu decided to remain in the cave after Ponzu’s bees identified Hanzo as the person who had found them.
  • Killua arrived and demanded badge 199, which Ponzu had taken from the three brothers.
  • Odin offered Killua badge 199 if he fought him, and the two exchanged attacks for several minutes.
  • Killua gave up the fight, and Ponzu handed him badge 199.
  • Odin told Ponzu they had to leave and find another badge, and Ponzu thanked him for helping her.

Ch. 37The Snake Den

Ponzu and Odin tracked Ba Peng to a snake-filled cave and forced him out with smoke. Ponzu overcame his snakes and insect repellent long enough to seize his number badge, 103.

  • Ponzu's bees located a cave full of snakes, and Odin confirmed Ba Peng was inside.
  • Ponzu and Odin lit a smoky fire at the cave entrance to drive Ba Peng out.
  • Ba Peng emerged and scattered Ponzu's bees with insect repellent before using a whistle to summon the snakes around them.
  • Ponzu used a pungent snake-repelling liquid to charge Ba Peng and rip a pouch from his waist.
  • Ponzu dodged Ba Peng's kick, knocked him over, and retrieved number badge 103.

Ch. 38The third time

Odin and Ponzu returned to their base after Ponzu took Ba Peng’s badge, then waited until Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrived seeking Ponzu’s badge. Odin deterred them from fighting, and the three left to search for Bodoro instead.

  • Ponzu took badge number 103 from Ba Peng, and she and Odin returned to their base with enough points to qualify.
  • Odin and Ponzu rested until the fifth day, while Ponzu counted the bees she had left.
  • Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrived, and Kurapika identified Ponzu as their target because Leorio needed her badge.
  • Odin refused to give up Ponzu’s badge and pointed out that the three lacked confidence in taking it from them.
  • Kurapika chose to seek Bodoro instead, and Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio apologized before leaving.

Ch. 39Bodoro's Choice

Odin gave Leorio two spare badges, helping him reach the score he needed, and Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio tracked Bodoro to his hiding place. Leorio defeated Bodoro in a one-on-one fight and left with two badges, while Bodoro stayed behind to rest.

  • Odin gave Leorio badges 61 and 198, explaining that he admired Leorio's dream of providing free medical care to the poor.
  • On the morning of the sixth day, Gon led Kurapika and Leorio to Bodoro's hiding place in a hollow tree.
  • Bodoro agreed to fight Leorio for his badge, and Leorio eventually outmaneuvered him with a second dagger held at Bodoro's back.
  • Bodoro gave Leorio badges 191 and 118, and Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio left as Bodoro settled down to rest.

Ch. 40Final test · Interviews

Odin and the other applicants completed interviews with Netero aboard the airship, then arrived at the site of the final Hunter Exam test. The applicants followed Beans into a vast, empty hall, where the next test awaited them.

  • The applicants gathered at Glasses Island's docks, and Lippo announced that they had passed the fourth test and would head to the final test site.
  • On the airship, Hisoka, Gittarackur, Hanzo, Odin, Ponzu, and the other applicants took turns being interviewed by Netero.
  • Odin told Netero he wanted to become a Hunter to see interesting things and would rather not fight Hisoka, Gittarackur, or Gon.
  • Ponzu told Netero she wanted to protect rare insects and did not want to fight Hisoka, Gittarackur, or Odin.
  • The airship landed beside a large building, and Beans led the applicants through a hotel corridor into an enormous empty hall.
