Ch. 1Gored by a Wild Boar

Reborn on Whale Island as a natural Nen user, Luo Ye discovered that his ability let him adapt to attacks as he fought. After protecting Gon from a wild boar, he agreed to join Gon for the Hunter Exam someday, leaving the two boys looking toward a future adventure.

  • Luo Ye woke up on Whale Island, recalled that Aunt Mito had raised him and Gon, and realized he had been born with an adaptive Nen ability.
  • Luo Ye found Gon training by the shore to improve his reflexes before he went looking for Ging.
  • Gon charged a wild boar with a branch, but the boar broke it and lunged at him.
  • Luo Ye stepped in front of Gon and endured repeated attacks as his body adapted to the boar's blows.
  • Luo Ye knocked the exhausted boar unconscious with a Nen-enhanced punch, and Gon celebrated the prospect of roast meat.
  • Gon invited Luo Ye to take the Hunter Exam with him someday, and Luo Ye agreed to come along and handle the fallout.

Ch. 2Aunt Mito's Test

After Luo Ye and Gon brought home a wild boar, Gon told Aunt Mito he planned to take the Hunter Exam, and Luo Ye promised to go with him. Aunt Mito agreed on one condition: Gon had to catch the King of the Swamp or remain on the island.

  • Luo Ye and Gon dragged a wild boar home, where Aunt Mito checked them for injuries and prepared it for dinner.
  • During dinner, Gon told Aunt Mito he had decided to take the Hunter Exam because his father was a Hunter.
  • Aunt Mito refused, saying Gon’s father had abandoned them to become a Hunter.
  • Luo Ye tried to reassure Aunt Mito that he would accompany Gon and bring him home safely, but Gon insisted he was going.
  • Aunt Mito agreed to let Gon take the Hunter Exam if he caught the King of the Swamp; otherwise, he had to stay on the island.

Ch. 3Fishing

Gon took Luo Ye to Whale Island's swamp to catch the King of the Swamp so he could take the Hunter Exam. After the enormous fish broke Gon's handmade rod, they left to build stronger equipment and plan another attempt.

  • Gon woke Luo Ye before dawn and told him Aunt Mito had agreed that catching the King of the Swamp would let him take the Hunter Exam.
  • Gon led Luo Ye to a pool where he had once seen a huge shadow and baited his handmade fishing rod with earthworms.
  • The King of the Swamp took the bait and pulled so hard that it snapped Gon's rod before they could catch it.
  • Luo Ye encouraged Gon to try again, and Gon decided they would make a stronger rod and devise another plan.

Ch. 4Scientific Fishing

Luo Ye and Gon built a flexible fishing rod with a crude reel and devised a plan to tire out the swamp’s enormous creature. They climbed a giant dead tree to collect Phantom Light Fireflies for bait, while the creature watched them from below.

  • Luo Ye taught Gon to use a flexible rod, a long line, and a reel to wear down the powerful creature instead of fighting it head-on.
  • Gon found a flexible, sturdy tree, and the two built a crude spinning reel and twisted vine fibers with spider silk to make a strong fishing line.
  • Gon suggested using Phantom Light Fireflies as bait because swamp creatures loved eating them.
  • Gon and Luo Ye swam to the giant dead tree and began climbing it with short knives as makeshift steps.
  • Halfway up the tree, Luo Ye saw the enormous creature circling beneath them and flipped it off.

Ch. 5Climbing the Tree

Luo Ye and Gon climbed a rotten tree above the swamp to collect Phantom Light Fireflies while the King of the Swamp tried to knock the tree down. With their jar full and the creature waiting below, Luo Ye prepared to use fishing line to drop them onto its face.

  • Luo Ye nearly fell when his climbing blade slipped, then held on as the King of the Swamp slammed into the tree.
  • When Gon’s blade came loose, Luo Ye kicked upward and boosted him back to safety.
  • Luo Ye and Gon reached the branches and collected a jar full of Phantom Light Fireflies.
  • Luo Ye tied fishing line to a thick branch and the jar, then proposed that they drop straight onto the King of the Swamp’s face.

Ch. 6Right in the Boss's Face

Luo Ye and Gon used a fishing line to land on the King of the Swamp and endured its violent attempts to shake them off. They steered the exhausted creature onto the muddy shallows, where it became stranded, and Luo Ye felt his strength had greatly increased.

  • Luo Ye grabbed Gon and plunged from the tree toward the King of the Swamp, using the Phantom Light Fireflies as bait.
  • Luo Ye tugged the fishing line to guide them past the creature's open jaws, and they landed on its head.
  • The King of the Swamp dived and thrashed underwater, while Luo Ye held Gon and adapted to the pressure and impact.
  • Luo Ye and Gon waited until the creature weakened, then swung the fishing line to redirect its leap toward the bank.
  • The King of the Swamp crashed into the muddy shallows and became stranded, and Luo Ye and Gon rolled into the mud laughing.

Ch. 7Ready to set out

After defeating the King of the Swamp, Luo Ye and Gon proved their catch to Aunt Mito, who agreed to let them take the Hunter Exam if they promised to return alive. The two prepared to leave, with Gon eager to see the world and Luo Ye looking forward to testing himself against new opponents.

  • Luo Ye recovered from his injuries and found that his Nen reserves had at least doubled after fighting the King of the Swamp.
  • Luo Ye pried a scale from the King of the Swamp and gave it to Gon as proof of their catch.
  • Gon and Luo Ye returned home, where Aunt Mito worried over them and recognized the scale as proof they had succeeded.
  • Aunt Mito kept her promise to let them take the Hunter Exam, asking them to come home alive; Gon promised, and Luo Ye assured her he would watch over him.
  • Gon thanked Luo Ye for joining him, and the two sat beneath the stars discussing the Hunter Exam and setting out to raise hell.

Ch. 8Main cast members +2

Luo Ye and Gon left Whale Island for the Hunter Exam, where they met Leorio and Kurapika. After a storm forced them to work together, the Captain declared they had passed the ship’s first test, and the four began their journey as companions.

  • Luo Ye and Gon said goodbye to Aunt Mito and boarded the ship carrying Hunter Exam candidates.
  • Gon introduced himself and Luo Ye to Leorio and Kurapika, who argued over Leorio’s desire for money and Kurapika’s views on wealth.
  • A sudden storm battered the ship, and Gon, Luo Ye, Kurapika, and Leorio helped the crew keep it afloat.
  • The Captain announced that the four had passed the first test by working together during the storm.
  • Leorio and Kurapika apologized to each other, and Gon welcomed them as teammates.

Ch. 9A No-Win Question

Luo Ye, Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika reached the mountain route to the Hunter Exam and faced an old guide’s impossible hostage question. Kurapika recognized that silence was the right response, and the group continued toward the exam site.

  • Luo Ye and the others left their ship at Dore Port and followed Gon’s directions to a town beneath the mountain.
  • An old woman at a teahouse said she would reveal the correct path only if they answered whether they would save their mother or lover from a criminal.
  • Several applicants chose the wide path and left after rejecting the question.
  • Kurapika stopped Leorio from answering and recognized the question as a trap.
  • The old woman declared that their silence had passed the test and directed them down the narrow path toward the exam site.
  • The old woman watched the four leave and remarked on their distinct personalities.

Ch. 10Taking Flight

Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and Luo Ye faced the Kiriko family’s staged rescue test on the way to the mountaintop. After passing, they flew with the Kiriko to Saba City, where the first phase of the Hunter Exam awaited them.

  • Leorio stayed behind to treat the wounded husband while Gon and Kurapika pursued the monster that had taken the woman, and Luo Ye followed at an easy pace.
  • Gon tracked the monster to a cliff, where Kurapika realized the chase had been deliberately arranged.
  • The Kiriko revealed that the apparent victims and monsters were examiners in disguise and announced that all four candidates had passed.
  • The Kiriko praised Gon’s tracking, Kurapika’s reasoning, and Leorio’s medical judgment, while Luo Ye admitted he had recognized the test and watched for entertainment.
  • The Kiriko transformed into giant flying foxes and carried the four candidates toward Saba City, the site of the first exam phase.

Ch. 11Arrival

Luo Ye, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio reached Saba City and followed the Kiriko's instructions to find the Hunter Exam entrance. The chapter ended as they descended in a hidden elevator beneath a steakhouse, ready for the exam to begin.

  • The Kiriko flew Luo Ye, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio to the outskirts of Saba City and warned them that the real Hunter Exam started at the venue.
  • The lead Kiriko told them to find a steakhouse and request the “slow-roasted steak set” as the password.
  • The four found the crowded steakhouse, where Kurapika gave the password to the head chef.
  • The head chef led them through a corridor to a concealed elevator and sent them down toward the exam venue.

Ch. 12The Rookie Crusher and the Twisted Magician

Luo Ye and his companions arrived at the Hunter Exam and received their candidate numbers. After Luo Ye foiled Tonpa’s attempt to trick the newcomers, they witnessed Hisoka turn a candidate’s arms into petals before examiner Satotz began the first phase.

  • Beans welcomed Leorio, Kurapika, Gon, and Luo Ye and gave them badges numbered 403 through 406.
  • Tonpa offered the newcomers juice, but Luo Ye warned them that the drinks might contain laxatives, and Tonpa abandoned his trick.
  • Luo Ye spotted the clown-faced Hisoka and watched as Hisoka transformed a candidate’s arms into petals.
  • Luo Ye warned Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika to avoid Hisoka until they could defeat him.
  • Satotz appeared and announced that he was the examiner for the first phase, then asked the candidates to follow him.

Ch. 13The Main Cast Assembles

Satotz began the Hunter Exam’s first phase, a long run through a tunnel to the second phase. Luo Ye helped rekindle Leorio’s resolve, and he, Leorio, Gon, and Killua continued running together.

  • Satotz opened the stone door and told the applicants to follow him to the second-phase site or be eliminated.
  • Luo Ye ran easily and spotted Killua skateboarding, Leorio struggling in a suit, Gon keeping an energetic pace, and Kurapika running steadily.
  • Killua teased Leorio, who gave up from exhaustion and sat down.
  • Luo Ye kicked Leorio’s briefcase away, provoking him to retrieve it and charge forward with renewed determination.
  • Killua introduced himself to Gon and Luo Ye, and the four continued deeper into the tunnel.

Ch. 14Was There a Government Job at the End of the Tunnel?

Luo Ye ran with Gon and Killua through the first part of the Hunter Exam, then followed examiner Satotz into the dangerous Numere Wetlands. After Hisoka exposed a fake examiner, the candidates continued into the fog toward the second test.

  • Luo Ye chatted with Gon and Killua during the long run through the tunnel and spotted Tonpa still keeping pace.
  • Gon noticed the tunnel exit, and the candidates emerged into the Numere Wetlands, where Satotz warned them about deceptive creatures and led them into the fog.
  • A wounded man claimed Satotz was an Ape Man impostor and said he was the real examiner, leaving the candidates unsure whom to trust.
  • Hisoka threw playing cards at both men, killing the claimant and identifying Satotz as the real examiner.
  • Satotz warned Hisoka against attacking again, then resumed leading the candidates through the wetlands.

Ch. 15This Monstrous Wealth Has Finally Fallen to Me

During the Hunter Exam’s foggy wetland crossing, Hisoka killed an examinee and cornered Leorio. Luo Ye arrived to confront him, excited at the chance to claim Hisoka’s wealth.

  • Luo Ye followed Leorio, Kurapika, Gon, and Killua through the thick fog as screams spread among the examinees.
  • Hisoka stopped in the mist and decided to act as an examiner, then killed a man who attacked him with a playing card.
  • The examinees fled in panic, and Leorio became separated from Kurapika and the others.
  • Hisoka approached Leorio, who froze beside the headless corpse.
  • Luo Ye appeared at Leorio’s side and told Hisoka to step aside, eager to claim his wealth.

Ch. 16The fruit grower

Luo Ye deliberately let Hisoka wound him so his Combat Adaptive Evolution could learn from the attack, while Leorio watched in terror. Gon and Kurapika arrived, and Hisoka withdrew after declaring that they had all passed, leaving Luo Ye eager for another fight.

  • Luo Ye calmly apologized to Hisoka on Leorio's behalf, provoking Hisoka to attack him.
  • Luo Ye let Hisoka's playing card cut his cheek and enjoyed the pain as his body began adapting.
  • Hisoka used Bungee Gum to pull Luo Ye close and kicked him hard, while Luo Ye's body analyzed Hisoka's Nen and strength.
  • Gon and Kurapika arrived, and Hisoka released Luo Ye and left after telling them they had all passed.
  • Leorio collapsed in relief, while Luo Ye dismissed his injuries as free coaching and lamented that Hisoka had left.

Ch. 17A Mental State Miles Ahead

After Hisoka disappeared into the fog, Luo Ye recovered from his injuries and revealed that he had deliberately taken Hisoka’s attack to strengthen his Nen. The group resumed the marathon, with their opinions of Luo Ye changed and Luo Ye eager for another challenge.

  • Leorio collapsed in relief after Hisoka vanished, while Gon and Kurapika checked on Luo Ye.
  • Luo Ye healed rapidly and admitted he had faced Hisoka on purpose to gain experience and strengthen his Nen.
  • Killua noticed Luo Ye’s unusual recovery, and Gon and Kurapika warned him not to risk his life again.
  • Luo Ye revived Leorio, joked about charging him an appearance fee, and led the group back into the marathon.
  • The five ran through the fog together as Leorio showed gratitude, Kurapika stayed wary, Killua grew curious, and Gon treated Luo Ye as usual.
  • Luo Ye felt his Nen surging and looked forward to meeting another helpful examiner.

Ch. 18Only looks good by comparison

Luo Ye resisted the wetland’s hallucinogenic fragrance and rescued Kurapika, Leorio, and Gon from their visions while Killua watched in disbelief. Carrying the two unconscious men, Luo Ye led the group out of the fog toward the fortress where the second test would take place.

  • A sweet fragrance split the team apart as Leorio chased an illusory gold coin, Kurapika confronted phantom members of the Phantom Troupe, and Gon pursued a vision of his father.
  • Killua resisted the fragrance better than the others but still felt dizzy, while Luo Ye breathed it in without being affected.
  • Luo Ye knocked Kurapika and Leorio unconscious, caught up with Gon, and punched him awake to break his illusion.
  • Luo Ye carried Kurapika and Leorio as the group continued through the fog, and Killua asked why he had not been affected.
  • The group passed the fragrant area and saw the fortress-like venue for the second test ahead.

Ch. 19The Battle of the Master Chefs Starts Now

Luo Ye carried the unconscious Kurapika and Leorio to the second-phase venue, where examiner Menchi announced a cooking test. The applicants headed into Biska Forest to hunt Great Stamps, while Luo Ye declared his goal was to make the worst-tasting pig ever.

  • Luo Ye arrived at the villa carrying Kurapika and Leorio, then Gon woke Leorio and Kurapika thanked Luo Ye for saving him.
  • Menchi and Buhara introduced themselves as the examiners and announced that the second phase would test cooking.
  • After applicants protested, Buhara punched a hole in a wall and Menchi told them they could leave if they refused.
  • Menchi instructed the applicants to hunt Great Stamps in Biska Forest and roast a whole pig that would satisfy the examiners.
  • Luo Ye urged Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio into the forest, announcing that they would make the worst-tasting pig ever.

Ch. 20Art is torture

Luo Ye and the other examinees discovered that the Great Stamps’ heads were vulnerable and captured pigs for the cooking test. While the others picked appetizing animals, Luo Ye chose a scrawny pig and prepared to create a deliberately terrible dish.

  • The examinees struggled to catch the Great Stamps, whose armored bodies and strength defeated their attacks.
  • Gon knocked a charging Great Stamp unconscious with his fishing rod, revealing its head as its weak point.
  • Gon and Killua distracted the herd while Kurapika worked out attack timing, and the group captured pigs.
  • Luo Ye rejected the plump pigs and chose a scrawny, misshapen pig for his dish.
  • The group returned to the manor with their pigs, and Luo Ye announced that his cooking would be performance art meant to taste terrible.
