After laying the third prince beside Lelouch's sealed body, Uzumaki Gamu remarked, "Seeing these two lying side by side is pretty funny." In the original story, Lelouch had also used his Geass to reach the third prince, then questioned him with it before killing him!
No matter how he looked at it, that seemed like a mistake born of venting anger. Lelouch clearly had the power to forcibly control people and turn them into his servants, yet he chose to ask a few questions and kill the man outright. What a waste of an ability!
The best choice would have been to control him and make him a servant he could order around at will. As the Empire's third prince, he had plenty of resources at his disposal! That would have been a fast track to wealth!
Still, Lelouch had only just obtained his power then and didn't fully understand its parameters, so his reluctance to use it recklessly was understandable. Later, his pride made him want to change the world through his own intelligence, so he still avoided using Geass indiscriminately. That was purely a restriction the writers had added to keep the plot from moving too fast. If he really used Geass freely, he could have united Britannia in a few episodes, leaving no reason for the anime to continue!
