Yechen found a corner to rest in. He had barely sat down when Shisui Uchiha came over.
"Yechen, you didn't run into any danger, did you?"
At that, Yechen gave him a questioning look.
It made sense. Since Danzo had targeted him, there was no reason he would spare Shisui Uchiha.
Their failure was probably due to underestimating the two of them. From the way Shisui asked, he seemed to have figured something out.
"You were attacked too?"
"Too?" Shisui Uchiha picked up on Yechen's wording. After a moment's thought, he asked,
"Who do you suspect was behind the attacks on us?"
"I imagine you already have someone in mind." Yechen recounted what had happened.
Shisui Uchiha looked surprised when he heard it.
"The Blood-Binding Demon-Eater Barrier? They didn't use that against me, but two ninja did attack me. They were just as fearless in the face of death."
"Do you know who sent them?" Yechen asked.
Shisui Uchiha shook his head. "No, but they probably weren't Rock Ninja."
"Hmm..." Yechen had no intention of hiding it. Telling him would help him stay more vigilant in the future.
"Have you ever heard of Root?"
"Root? What's that?" Shisui Uchiha shook his head in confusion.
"A branch of Konoha's Anbu that secretly trains operatives willing to die on command."
"What...?"
Shisui Uchiha cried out at the answer. He quickly realized his reaction would draw attention and hurriedly lowered his voice.
"You're saying our own people attacked us?"
"You already suspected that, didn't you?"
Faced with Yechen's question, Shisui Uchiha hesitated for a while before answering.
"I never believed the village would attack us. Before we left, the Elder called me in for a talk. He told me that when I was away from home, I had to beware of hidden enemies.
