Things moved faster than Ling had imagined.
Almost as soon as the day after the Third Hokage left, the simple move-in paperwork was complete. Ling's pitifully few belongings-a few changes of clothes and a battered literacy textbook-were packed into a small cloth bag. Kakashi took his hand somewhat awkwardly and led him away from the orphanage where he had lived for four years, toward a quiet residential area on the edge of the village.
The Hatake Residence was a traditional Japanese-style house with a small courtyard. The courtyard walls were weathered, and the wood of the porch showed its age. The whole place had a cold, lonely air that suited its owner remarkably well.
"You'll live here from now on." Kakashi pushed open the door, his voice as flat as ever. "The empty room on the left is yours. Clean it up yourself."
The furnishings inside were extremely sparse, almost making the house feel empty. There was little sign that anyone lived there, only the most basic furniture covered in a thin layer of dust.
Silently clutching his little cloth bag, Ling entered the room that belonged to him. It was small but clean, with a south-facing window that let in the sunlight. Compared with the orphanage's crowded dormitory, it was practically paradise.
Hmph. Finally, a decent base, Tobirama remarked in his mind. Spartan, but private enough. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings as soon as possible. Memorize every entrance and exit, every blind spot, and every possible escape route.
Ling had already begun instinctively surveying the place without Tobirama's reminder. It was a habit he had developed over the past six months under the weight of pressure and fear.
After setting down his belongings, Ling left his room and saw Kakashi lounging on the porch, engrossed in a copy of Icha Icha Paradise. It was as though the powerful ninja who had driven back Root amid flashes of lightning yesterday had been nothing but an illusion.
"Um... Mr. Kakashi..." Ling began quietly.
"Hmm?" Kakashi did not look up from his book.
"Could... could I help clean?" Ling asked. He understood all too well what it meant to live under someone else's roof. Being obedient and hardworking could never hurt.
Kakashi's hand paused as he turned a page, as though the question had surprised him. He glanced up at Ling, then lowered his eyes again and drawled, "Suit yourself. The cleaning supplies are in the closet at the end of the hall."
Ling got to work immediately. He fetched water, found a rag and broom, and began carefully wiping down the furniture and sweeping dust from the floor. His small size made the work a little difficult, but he was remarkably meticulous and focused, leaving no corner untouched.
Although Kakashi appeared to be reading, he kept watching Ling out of the corner of his eye. As the gray-haired child cleaned painstakingly, his movements showed a steadiness and patience far beyond his years, nothing like the clumsiness of an ordinary four-year-old. His eyes, in particular, were as still as a deep pool, occasionally flickering with thought.
He's watching you, Tobirama said coldly. Act more naturally. Don't give anything away. Right now, you're just a slightly precocious orphanage child: a little timid, but very well-behaved.
Ling followed his advice and slowed down a little, occasionally making a deliberate show of clumsiness. He nearly fell while standing on tiptoe to wipe a high spot, for instance, and splashed water all over the floor while wringing out the rag.
Kakashi watched without comment and merely turned another page.
After cleaning the living room, Ling hesitated, then looked at Kakashi. "Mr. Kakashi, does your room... need cleaning?"
Kakashi did not raise his head. "No. Don't go in."
His tone was mild, but the boundary it drew allowed no argument.
Ling nodded obediently and turned to cleaning the courtyard instead. He pulled weeds from the cracks between the stones and swept up fallen leaves, doing a proper job of it.
The afternoon passed in quiet cleaning. By sunset, Ling had not only cleaned his room and the shared areas thoroughly, but polished even the porch floor until it gleamed.
Kakashi closed his book and stretched. He seemed to pause in surprise at the transformed house. Then he went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. It was bare except for a few cartons of expired milk and some instant noodle cups.
"...Tch." He scratched his head and looked at Ling, who stood on the porch looking a little unsure of himself. "Hungry?"
Ling nodded honestly.
"Come on. We'll eat out," Kakashi said simply.
At Ichiraku Ramen, Kakashi ordered an extra-large bowl of tonkotsu ramen for himself and a small one for Ling. He watched Ling eat quietly, almost too politely. There was none of the excitement an ordinary child would show at the sight of delicious food. Ling ate with intense concentration and even finished every last drop of broth.
"How was it?" Kakashi asked casually.
"It was delicious. Thank you, Mr. Kakashi." Ling set down his bowl and answered politely.
"Just call me Kakashi from now on." Looking into those overly calm eyes, Kakashi suddenly asked, as though the thought had merely occurred to him, "Did anyone at the orphanage teach you how to mold chakra?"
Here it comes! He's probing me!
Alarm bells rang in Ling's mind, but his face showed just the right amount of confusion and a little curiosity. "Chakra? What's that? Is it that amazing power the ninja use? No one ever taught me... I've only seen it in picture books."
His answer was watertight, perfectly matching what an ordinary orphanage child would know.
Kakashi stared at him for two seconds, then looked away and lazily paid the bill. "Let's go."
On the way home, the two walked one behind the other without speaking.
The moonlight stretched their shadows long.
As they neared the Hatake Residence, Kakashi suddenly spoke without turning around, his tone utterly casual. "If you have nothing to do in the mornings, you can run around the courtyard on your own. You're a boy. A little more exercise won't hurt."
Ling froze for a moment, then understood-Kakashi was tacitly letting him do some basic physical training! It was even a subtle form of permission, allowing him a certain degree of freedom to move about in this courtyard!
"Okay! I will!" A small, age-appropriate note of excitement entered Ling's voice.
Kakashi said nothing more. He pushed open the courtyard gate and went inside.
Ling followed him, watching that silver-haired figure from behind, his heart filled with conflicting emotions.
He knew Kakashi's vigilance and probing would not end here. That question about chakra had only been the beginning.
But at least he had gained a relatively safe place to stay, along with a guardian who seemed distant yet had perhaps not closed off his heart entirely.
His new life quietly began amid these silent probes and cautious responses. Beneath the night sky, the Hatake Residence, too, seemed to have gained a faint trace of lived-in warmth.
